Thanks Ann for your brilliant reaction video! A little over seven years watching this Amazing Talent Perform and she gets better every year! She does all the arrangements along with her team! Your correct in your assessment of her ! Who she is , is even more beautiful then her singing ! She is all about Loving,Jesus , Family, The Suffering and being Humble. I am sending an old favourite of mine, since I first heard,Johnny Mathis sing it back in the 60’s! The song is a Jazz standard, Misty! She is beforing it on a Busking Show done for television! Usually a group of 8 to 12 accomplished Singer/ musicians from Korea go to a couple countries and street perform for the public in casual settings for free, then broadcast weekly on Korean TV.(?by the way in case you don’t know she is basically a Gospel Singer, who has promised God to use her voice to praise him and lift the spirits of those suffering in anyway! All as thanks for being saved from cancer(?which did leave her as a newly wed unable to give birth)? She sings with her heart Love this song and this setting as the Show, Begin Again Korea was shot entirely in Korea because of COVID, she was on the show for about half the season and it is her first time ! Arirang Alone is based on a 600 year old folk song based on the history of Korea, peace and war and the longing for unity where the boats from the north and south will meet and the country be one again. The songwriter’s parents had to leave two sons and a daughter in North Korea during the war. His father’s dying wish to him was “when Korea reunite, go find your older brothers and sister and tell them that their parents did not abandoned them”. Where everyone in the audience sings along is where Sohyang incorporated the original Arirang lyrics and melody. It is a very patriotic song, which is why Sohyang is wearing a hanbok, traditional Korean clothes. Forgot to mention that while Sohyang always uses her hands a lot, Arirang Alone has hand gestures from traditional dance as well, so the hand movements are greater here.

The best compliment you can make is that it's impossible to imagine anyone else singing this arrangement. Most of her commonly reacted to performances have been on contest shows like this one where she turns the temperature on her flamethrower to max and melts faces, but recently she's been doing more stripped down arrangements as part of a TV series where she busked around Korea during the pandemic with a crew of other well known singers. I Will Always Love You, If I Ain't Got You, Flashlight and several other Korean language songs including one where she speed raps are all awesome (get them on Vimeo to avoid copyright issues though.) Loved this video and I definitely mashed the subscribe button because you clearly get The Queen in the same way her fans do and I am eager for more.

Fyi, she stayed in her mixed voice up and through the Bb5. Never sang with full head voice. She can take it to a C#6 in her mixed voice. It is more heady but still mixed. Nice reaction. Love seeing reactors who know music react to So Hyang.

From what I know the violinist was on Britain’s got talent. She is originally from Korea but I believe when she appeared on that show she was studying in the UK. She entered with a friend and performed a duet instrumental and was told that if she wanted to progress she would have to go through as a solo act and leave her friend behind. She did quite well

On your agility query, Sohyang is not as well known as strong melismatic singers such as Bey or Mariah, or as prolific user as Tori Kelly or Jessie J for example. However, she had been documented in *live performances* a few maximum runs of *8 notes* per second, *13 notes* in 1.5, and most recently *19 notes* in 2.2 seconds. On par with the very top tier imho, minus a few best record holders. With these kind of numbers, it's most likely by preference that Sohyang prefers legato style more, with subtle yet tasty runs here and there. I'm glad she did. It's better to highlight her marathoner stamina more, as well as her superb breath management and support. Instead of staccato or over the top riffing, Sohyang stands out more as she performs complex vocal line and phrasing in a single breath, ... often while navigating her registers seamlessly at the same time, ... discretely applying crescendo and/or diminuendo just because she can 😵 ... even in the 5th octave 🤯. All. In. One. Breath. 😱 Underneath the superficial Vocal Monster slash Belting Queen, there is an even more frightening depth of Sohyang's arsenal of skills.

I am so tired,my thumbs have gone on strike! sorry again!! Michael bolton = speechless!! I think that if you're wanting to continue with sohyang then I suggest you keep with this show in particular,which seems to be the starting point for many sohyang admirers, & then bring it to her most recent performances,where if I can see that she's vocally even better now than she was 5/6 yrs ago, i'm sure a person with your expertise will notice straight away, with the odd performance from one-off shows thrown in. So you started with 'bridge over troubled water' , then 'arirang alone' , I have suggested 'lean on me' & then her performance of what is generally regarded as her masterpiece 'Everyone', which is 7 mins of pure genius especially as she said it was the hardest song to sing, simply because of a lack of places to breathe & finally the last one in this series, although a couple of years later, her performance of 'you raise me up' Maybe to have a break from that show is another performance from around the same date is her appearance at the DMC festival where I first heard her sing Whitney, OMG! it blew my mind when she sang 'i have nothing'. she also sang one of her own songs after that 'Dream'. If you cant wait to hear something she's done during the pandemic then I suggest you see her rendition, once again, of a whitney classic ( yes,I know DP wrote it), of 'i will always love you' from the.'begin again korea' series. The idea of this project is a small ensemble(6/7ish) of established korean artists both vocalists & instrumentalists basically go 'busking' in workplaces & public spaces & put on 'mini concerts' of a more acoustic nature to very tiny crowds because of social distancing, to bring happiness to people during the pandemic. This has to be the fastest i've had goosebumps from sohyang, I heard that one note,for the key, then "if i" , & that was it,a shiver ran down my spine. This should keep you satisfied for a while & then you may be ready to hear her 'rapping' 😱

I'm enjoying more Folk music with modern arrangements lately. I think the stagnation of commercial pop music known as dueling endless melismas is fading out as more and more people are tired of some of the redundancy in music today. I find it refreshing. Love this piece. "You raise me up" is a personal favorite of mine and would be great choices for another peek.

This song "Arirang alone" is the song about the most ardent wishes of whole Korean people in south, north and even all over the world. This song eagerly wishes that whole south and notth Korean people can hold the hands of each others and trip together from Baek Du mountain to Halla mountain via Dokdo island. In Korean lyrics, Baek Du is the name of the mountain at almost northern end of Korean peninsula and it is the highest and considered as holy mountain by all Korean people and Hallla is the name of second highest mountain located in Jeju island where is the southern end of Korean peninsula. And finally Dokdo is the name of the island located on eastern end side of Korean peninsula. So, when we Korean people hear this song, we might be easily emotional compare to other nations.
