It’s a traditional folk song, so inviting the audience makes sense. Not to mention, that’s a motion you can do when you’re being taken over by the music. She was doing perfectly fine, and it felt organic to me.

The “arm thing” she’s doing is kind of a traditional Korean dance that she’s not wholeheartedly committing to but is hinting at. Which makes sense bc Arirang is a traditional Korean folk song. It’s that and later in the piece you see she kind of switches to using her arm to encourage the audience to sing along bc all Koreans know Arirang.

It's not a conducting arm it is Korean Traditional Dance .. if you ever see it you'll understand . This song is a traditional folk song that is considered the second national anthem and is related to the longing of families separated by the war and their hope and desire to be reunited.

the floating arm is a stylistic gesture traditional to korean folk dance. Foreign audiences unfamiliar with it won't recognize it but much of her physical expression in this performance is very much classical Korean folk dance movements. (my mother sang this style professionally in Korea and also performed in these dances)

Almost every vocal coach who had reacted to SoHyang's performances talked about her flawless vocal techniques. But to me, what separates her from the rest is her amazing ability to capture the essence of a song, and the way she expresses and communicates her emotions with the audience, which is far more important than technical display.

Sohyang is South Korean. She is fluent in English. Arirang is a Korean Folk song. In that respect, it is different from everything else Sohyang does. She performs classic pop songs and she does all of her own arrangements - chorus, orchestra, and performance. She has a background in Gospel - that may pique your interest. Now that you have an idea of what she can do, find "I Have Nothing" (Legend version). "You Raise Me Up", "Bridge Over Troubled Water", for starters. You will be glad you did. Cheers.

7:28 Thought I should leave a comment concerning the "conducting arm"... There are certainly moments when she is conducting (and she generally likes to move around her arms a lot), but she is also generally moving like a traditional Korean dancer here (matches her doing a traditional Korean folksong, wearing hanbok, a traditional Korean dress).

Thank you for checking her out! She has tons of masterpiece performances. Hope to see more on your channel, this was just an introduction. :) Her all time masterpiece is "Everyone", it was insane. Bit more gospel. She recently nailed several performances on Begin again korea as well and proved that she can still nail every note. My favorite is "where are you", it's available on vimeo since the youtube version is cut. It has a heartbreaking climax. She can belt for days, singing with an angelic head voice and do absolutely smooth and seemless transitions. And breaking your heart with pure emotion. She sings to comfort people, not for being fame. She recently said it's okay when it's on youtube but that's all, she turned down an offer from Sony Music US recently.

All of the So Hyang fans smiled when you said you were surprised you had so many requests for this song. That said it is quite true if you only heard the first and last 30 seconds of this song you would have no idea that she was capable of what happens in the middle. If you want a good english language song of recent vintage then I Will Always Love You is a really good one, she sings it in the original key even though it's a bit below her tessitura and that allows her to focus on dynamics and tasteful ornaments. Oh and there's a sax solo without a saxaphone.

It's crazy to see the different things some coaches like and others don't. Majority of the other coach reactors I seen listen to this they all loved when she started getting the audience involved and conducting them.. one even cried because of it, lol... but I totally understand a different point of view, great reaction!

Welcome to So Hyang's world. :) Arirang alone is the unofficial national anthem based on a 600-year-old Korean (she is South Korean and singing in Korean) folk song, it is very patriotic and everybody knows it. It is about the longing for unity between the North and the South. So Hyang always uses her arms a lot, that is just her.

This is definitely the best song to start with from her but hope you do some follow ups from her acoustic arrangements from Begin Again Korea which just ended a couple of months ago including a very detailed version of I Will Always Love You. She is one of the greatest vocalist in the world...But She wasn't known as well popular. .because She sing for GOD and Comfort people who has hardtime Not for fame or money. ..In her youth, she turned down all offers from mega agencies for her beliefs...and now she is 42years old. .She has so many legendary live performances . . The “conducting arm”... is actually her mimicking the traditional Korean dance. You’ll notice she does that throughout the song, it wasn’t her “conducting”, but is the arm movement in traditional Korean dance that was part of the performance.

Arirang, Korea with a long history, was registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site on December 5, 2012. In the lyrics of this song, the East Sea and Dokdo appear, showing that it is the territory of Korea.

Thanks for the content great reaction and the cute intros. By far the best and most practical use of a drone. I spent way to long trying to identify it from looking at the controller. I still have no idea. There is a saying in the dark corners of the internet full of tribal god worship and out of context emoji's known as the KZfaq comment section. The names So-Hyang, Morissette and Dimash they form a triangle, otherwise known as the *Holy Trinity*. Saying that three times summons cultists that don't agree. Kinda like Son Sue-Kyung the violinist who teleported on stage when So Hyang cried out for help but not as gorgeous. I don't even know if these words i tossed in here make any sense.
