Rich, I worked as a software engineer for Tag McLaren in the UK in the early 90's. Back when Gordon Murray was a force of nature and we were working on the McLaren F1. Be lucky you don't own an actual F1 the appreciation of the car would totally have been eaten up with the annual maintenance. Sadly even as an employee I never got to drive an F1. I'm sorry to hear about all the issues you've had, this is not uncommon, I dare say that if Ron Dennis and Gordon were still running the show you'd not have had all these issues in one year.

@Chris Turnbull How about the issues before you even get your hands on the car from the dealer, especially after it had been standing out in the lot in the rain for several days. I really wish the issues weren't a thing but here we are.

I'm a 90s kid, and am a big fan of 90s Nissans. I am not at your level yet, so I can't really relate to you with the McLaren, but with 20k I could easily buy a well maintained Nissan S13 or S15, and drive it alongside my Nissan S14. They're a lot cheaper, I've seen that guys turn their heads after my S14 and even come to me at car meets to discuss and to see it closer. This video was unexpected, but very welcomed, as I love to see a successful person like you deep into cars and knows his way around them. Thoroughly enjoyed it. Happy holidays!

Thanks for the review. I have a Mclaren mp4-12c spyder and love it. I put on 4K miles it since May and it's been pretty reliable. I have an m-engineering tune for 700 crank hp. It's pretty fast. I'm now getting downpipes, bigger turbos, injectors, and a new tune shooting for 1,000hp. I have a red Ferrari f430 and it's fun, but I like the mclaren more. I was surprised the Mclaren pulls more attention than the Ferrari. One of my friends had a Ferrari 488 for about 3 months. He didn't like it and traded it in on a 720. He absolutely loves it. The guy who said get a Porsche or Ferrari probably owns no supercars and made that comment to make himself feel better by making a dig at your choice.

On the longer exhaust pipe. I build exhaust systems and study exhaust pulse harmonics. I'll bet the longer pipe is merely the head that is further back and they didn't want to unbalance the pressure waves changing the shape left to right. It also means the exhaust can be perfectly symmetrical making design much easier during that phase of design and tuning.

The blueprint for the McLaren M840T engine was developed by Tom Walkinshaw Racing based off of the Nissan VRH, intended for Indycar IRL (but never used). McLaren bought the rights to it. Ricardo PLC and McLaren Automotive further developed the engine to meet the specification requirements for the 720S. They are assembled at Ricardo PLC facilities in the UK.

As far as rallys go, a lotus 430 Exige is pretty hard to beat. They clean up in Australia in this type of racing. Lotus has a toyota engine (Camry V6 supercharged) and is the easiest/cheapest/fastest car for the money to work with. But they are the most raw. So that is the trade off. People under estimate these cars but the 430hp is faster than people give it credit for. On paper it doesn't look like it but in real life these are real weapons. The only place they run out of legs is the top end speeds.

Looks a lovely car and things always go wrong plus if you use it wear and tear is unavoidable perhaps considered character. I put my car away for winter with some fuel stabiliser in the tank, tyres on some carpet and connected to a trickle charger. I found all the problems, high running costs and road damage were significantly reduced when I kept it under its cover.

Pretty good and fair video! I bought a new 2020 720s spider and put 25k miles on it. I have had some build quality issues that the dealer took care of under warranty. No major issues!! I knew what I was getting into after doing my research and coming from a 458 which was almost flawless but my 720s is on another level.. I'm so happy with my purchase and it has gone up in value because of the shortage. I can't wait until winter is over!! The sausage magnet comment is spot on! Lol. @@huxleyorwellrand3137 "MAY not...." So they have a legal out if they want to take it. And they might decline something depending on what the warranty request is. But is my personal experience with my 2019 GT3RS that Porsche has performed my multiple pre-track inspections free of charge, performed track-use non-warranty related maintenance (so they KNOW it's being tracked), and still handled miscellaneous little warranty claims without any hesitation. Now certainly if you ask them to replace a suspension control arm that you broke by driving over track curbing too hard, or you blow the engine by doing a money downshift, or something else like that, they're probably going to deny it. But they don't just "void" your warranty in general. Read what you typed...they MAY not cover stuff that fails DURING track use. That's not the same thing as just voiding your warranty.

Beyond the money, was it worth the headache? I love cars but I hate more problems. Would you have been just as happy with a more reliable sports car?

There is no such thing as a reliable sports car. It’s not what they are for. It’s like trying to commute in a fighter jet.

Some are more reliable than others. I just value my time too much to deal with that number of issues. Sounds like he was solving for more than just pure fun that comes with a sports car.

@@darylmiller8911 any hobby takes time. So using that as your measure of satisfaction is a fools errand. This is part of growing into your hobby. They are temperamental, unreliable, challenging and costly. (Sound familiar?) but the real pay off is when you realize that YOU are the weakest part of the machine. To explore the limits of such a car is only for experienced pilots. I have a 765LT and it’s probably the best car on the planet.

No warranty for all these defects? Are warranties a “poor man’s thing?” All the issues sound like warranty related. Beautiful car though. Great video!

No, this is their business model. They will charge you premium for a car, and about 50+% of the price of the car by the repair service.

Andrew Tate explains this car well. I have a Lotus and you can't compare these cars to normal cars they are finicky and hand made. Things you take for granted on a normal car, can be a pain on these type of cars. But boy this cars are like you are plugged into the car. FANTASTIC!

Porsche 911 Rennsport variants are as reliable as “normal “ cars. No excuse for the reliability of British cars in 2021.

This is exactly why I sold my highly tuned gt500 for a Tesla Plaid. Been tuning 20+ years and have never had the consistent performance before with no maintenance. zero problems (except terrible brakes above 140mph so will need to get real track brakes so I dont smoke the stocks). Love The 720's and that sound!

Still watching :) The engine is a derivative of a Ford Cosworth engine. Cosworth is a British thing. I don't think I've ever heard of anything Cosworth derived used outside the UK having been in the US myself since the mid 90's. Funny you mention the computers, computers in cars will become a bigger and bigger issue as time passes. True story, the system that myself and 3 other guys developed is still used in the service of the F1 last time I looked into this. It is the oldest piece of software I ever worked on that is still in use! "McLaren needs a 20-year-old Compaq laptop to maintain its F1 supercar"

Any aftermarket ECU's for McLaren's?
@vincei4252
@vincei4252 2 жыл бұрын
@@thisreallysucksbig For the F1 ? I'd say that is highly unlikely. Even on contemporary cars I can't see why you'd do it as the cars perform really well anyway. It wouldn't be economically viable to provide such a thing in my mind. I'd be happy to be proved wrong, though.

@@vincei4252 I know a lot of the older style ECU's you can't do much with. Have to get an aftermarket ECU to run ITB's for my 99 Miata. Love the sound of NA motors.
