Annual vs perennial ryegrass for bermuda winter overseed

If you are thinking about doing a winter overseed of your bermuda lawn, you are tasked with choosing two types of grass seed. The first is annual ryegrass and the second is perennial ryegrass. In this video, I will show you the difference between the two grasses.

nice info. just want to add my 3 cents lol. perennial ryegrass can also be mowed lower, just as low as bermuda, annual ryegrass will struggle with that. scalping off perennial ryegrass "most varieties " won't work. perennial can also cause more damage to bermuda than annual ryegrass. the bermuda will come back but it's more of a struggle.

Thanks for the info. I will try perennial rye in the future after I do a few projects. I just didn't like the look of the lime green annual rye.

Same!! I literally just seeded with NuSprint in the front and a Oregon Rye Grass in the back, 15000 sqft! I’ve been keeping it moist through a diy sprinkler system and bam! Day 3 germination! This is my first lawn Reno and I’m so excited. Thanks man! I live in GA so I’ll try and watch all your videos

I threw out some rye seeds about a year and a half ago on my Bermuda lawn and the rye grass just won’t go away 😢 I only did it to have a green lawn for the winter, but I’m really missing the look of the Bermuda. I have to mow it as low as possible about twice a week now at this point. Anyone have any simple advice that wont require a lot of money? My neighbor said the Texas summer heat should burn it off, but this rye is super resilient.

Will 2,4-D hurt annual rye grass ? What weed killer do you prefer on it ?

It will not. Ortho weed b gon is safe for annual and perennial ryegrass. Just be sure you mix exactly as the label suggested.

When attempting to kill off the rye grass , how do u protect the bermuda ?

You don't, you apply a selective herbicide that targets cool season grass but is safe for bermuda. I made a video about it and I used revolver herbicide to kill off the rye. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/hM-Ed5CVztSuZYE.html

Not really, you can take a sample to your extention office to see if they can help but you mostly have to look at pictures and compare.

You are right about the heat killing the rye. During the transition in the spring when it s not too hot but not too cold, this is when you want to start the killing process mainly because you don't want the bermuda to wake up competing with the rye. It will delay full green up of the bermuda and even then, the rye may still survive if it is in shaded areas or areas with minimal sunlight where the bermuda may be weakest.
