Anaru, jealous or angry at Menma for occupying Jintan's thoughts, Jintan would be bargaining since he begs for another way or to keep Menma from disappearing, Tsuruko would be depression since Yukiatsu hangs out with Anaru so much, her love interest and Poppo would be acceptance since he was so carefree? And the fact that he has hidden how he 'killed' Menma... I don't know. It's just a theory, A ga- oh wait, an Anime Theory.

Hmm. Not sure. I think looking at them like that doesn't really do their characters justice? They're a real reflection of how grief affects different people regardless of how society (in this case Japan) expects them to act. None of them embody 'acceptance,' because that would require moving on. What follows is an ENTIRELY too long analysis so be warned. Jintan At first blush he seems to embody ‘depression’ because he became a recluse and burrowed down into his grief, while everyone else seemed to move on with their lives. In Japanese terms he’s a ‘hikikomori,’ he doesn’t go out, he doesn’t socialise, he’s not contributing to society and is a bit of a weirdo. His grief is very visible, his struggle is very visible, so he’s cast out of society. The only adult who accepts him is his dad. But Jintan does unthaw and he moves on to the bargaining stage, in this case literally. He tries to get Menma to stay, reasoning that there’s nothing keeping her from staying forever. If she stays, then they can continue their friendship, nothing has to change, he doesn’t have to go back to the black hole that was his grief before. Jintan doesn’t give himself much credit, he doesn’t think he can handle losing Menma again. But finally he accepts her death, he’s happy that they could say a final goodbye and he moves on with his life. He goes to school again, he reconnects with his friends. He’s healing. Jintan’s is a pretty classic case of healing grief, despite stalling in the process. Now let’s do Anaru. Anaru has largely suppressed her grief. She became a whole different person just to escape the dynamics of the group. She’s easily swayed by the opinion of others even though she outwardly seems to be doing the best of them all. Her friends aren’t the most supportive people, though by the end of the series they really do seem to regret their past failures. She attached herself to them mainly to escape her former self and they tend to get her involved in risky behaviours she isn’t ready for (see, going out with older guys.) So Anaru could be ‘denial’ but it runs a lot deeper than that. She’s forced herself to grow up and adopt a new personality, leaving her childish nickname behind because of its passing resemblance to a sexual act. Even though she still objects to the nickname by the end of the series, no one else considers the dirty subtext - Poppo even says she doesn’t need makeup. You might say that’s a typical guy thing to say, but I’d say it’s more his questioning why she tries to hide. Why she tries to be something she isn’t. She does Anaru wear makeup, why does she make such an effort, why does she object to being called ‘Anaru’ when that’s who she is? Eventually Anaru learns to stand up for herself a little more and not be so easily swayed by other people. She recognises how that helped cause the events surrounding Menma’s death and learns to forgive herself. Tsuruko She’s difficult because we really don’t know all that much about her. But at a glance we can tell she hasn’t changed all that much. She’s still clinging to what’s familiar - which is Yukiatsu. She’s trying to grow up as well, but in a different way to Anaru. She tries to be the reasonable, well adjusted adult even though she’s still clinging to a childhood crush. I think she’s the one character that does actually clearly embody one particular stage of grief, that being bargaining. If Menma is dead and if Anaru gets together with Jintan then maybe I’ll finally have a chance with Yukiatsu… Never mind that no boy is worth being the third choice. But she’s also denial. Because she tries to deny she’s still that same little girl, still holding onto a crush that’s now five years old. She tries to deny her feelings, tries to hide it all under a veneer of ‘adulthood’ and maturity. She’s not moving on at all. But by the end of the series she wears her emotions openly - which is symbolised by the hair pin. She’s confessed her feelings to Yukiatsu. We don’t know how he responds but at least she’s not suppressing everything anymore. Yukiatsu Oh boy. Well he’s somewhat in denial but it’s less a denial of Menma’s death and more a denial of who she was as a person. He tries to own her. He’s angry when Jintan can supposedly see her spirit because in his mind Menma ‘belongs’ to him. Menma has become the focus of his grief and obsession. I think the crossdressing part is mostly self-humiliation and punishment. He’s so wrapped up in his guilt over her death that he uses Menma’s image to punish himself. He’s sort of idealised her, romanticised her, and used her to punish himself to the point that his perception of what she would actually want has become so warped he truly believes she is a vengeful spirit, rather than the same kind hearted child she always was. Yukiatsu’s love for Menma grew twisted by his guilt until he mistook his own anger at himself for her anger. Since he hates himself for Menma’s death, surely Menma would want to punish him for it. And by the end he’s remembered who Menma really was, accepted his love for her as unrequited, and somewhat moved on. Poppo Poppo is the epitome of denial. He blames himself for Menma’s death and tried his hardest to run away, to lose himself in adventure and new experiences, but he always ends up back at the Base because that’s where it all began. He can’t leave the Base behind because that’s the root of his adventuring drive. It’s only once he gets past his guilt and disgust with himself, his own failure to save Menma, that he can actually be the person he’s trying to be. I believe the point of the show is to demonstrate how intensely varied and complicated grief can be. The whole reason Menma couldn't pass on is because Jintan, and by extension everyone else, were not allowed to properly process their grief. If these poor kids had been given the space and acceptance they needed and not been pressured into just 'dealing' with it, then Menma wouldn't have needed to be there for Jintan to be emotionally honest. The 'five stages of grief' are classic symptoms, but I think the show is trying to illustrate how they're not always linear. You go back and forth, skip some stages, repeat some others. It's a long, painful and difficult journey. The expectation of grief being a neat, smooth process that wraps up in a year or two is what lead to Menma's ghost in the first place. Jintan's mother knew her son would struggle to cope with her death and wanted Menma to be there for him, to help him be honest with himself, and of course when Menma died she only exacerbated an existing problem.

it only sounds weird here (because the translation choices the uploaders made are almost universally bad. sorry y'all, they just are). in the original, it's meant to provide a sense of place and time; a flash of memory from some long-ago childhood summer. the sun on your neck, a soda in your hand, and your friend running ahead, just out of reach.

***** and that's the problem. copying it directly from the japanese, as you have here, is a bad translation choice because it doesn't communicate the spirit of what galileo galilei meant to evoke with that imagery. it was a very deliberately evocative lyric in the original - not that i'm surprised that _you_ would have trouble understanding that, considering that you're the type of person who would turn something as beautiful as "そうやって塞いだ両の手で 抱きしめている春の風 まだ時間は僕らのもので「いつか、忘れてしまう今日だね」なんて 言わないでほしいよ" into this drivel: "I wish this moment would last forever That in the end we would be together But time is slipping by way too fast so please don’t go and say That we’ll forget this anyway as if it’s all in vain Let’s enjoy this while we can" _ugh_. just a world of ugh. look, you're great singers, though (if occasionally a bit overwrought-sounding). perhaps you should find someone else to adapt your rough translations into lyrics that actually work in english. not everyone is going to be able to handle all aspects of translation. there's no shame in being good at the literal aspects alone, and asking someone who has a knack for interpreting and adapting the less quantifiable aspects of language to help you with the rest.
