Looking at the context of the situation makes his manipulation attempt much worse imo. He was caught plagiarizing and instead of taking accountability he comes back with a video talking about his mental health being bad as if that makes what he did okay. This wasn’t a dog pile because he was homosexual or anything he did in his personal life; this is something he did willingly and continuously throughout his career.
@Eaode4 ай бұрын
seriously. I feel like ppl should know by now that the internet's reaction to wrongdoing is hyperbolic; it's just as severe a "punishment = justice" mentality as our actual justice system if not more. Harassment and death threats are not ok--we all know that which is why legit and important callout posts usually say "dont fucking harass them ffs". So like charlie says here, I have no doubt that the experience James is going through is horrible, and not really something I think even wrongdoers need to go through. But the theatrics about it, the centering of it, is so fucking manipulative, when he should be there to talk about his wrongdoing. Someone who did a bad thing is perfectly capable of saying "even though some people are being unduly horrible to me about it, I perfectly understand why people are upset overall because I did X" The presence of that extreme, of those threats, etc. isn't good and it's not that justifiable, but at this point we all KNOW that stuff happens. We know you're dealing with it b/c ppl at large now know that you're a bad actor in the context of the stuff you make and your relationship to your field. If you mention the difficulty of going through that (which I think you're allowed to even in a genuine apology video) it should be a FOOTNOTE and you yourself should caveat it by saying that it doesn't negate the wrong you've done and it doesn't weaken the position of people that dislike that wrong. It's just a fringe circumstance caused by a minority of upset people with bad boundaries or who have parasocial tendencies. It doesn't at all change the issue at hand. tl;dr James has a right to be upset about extreme responses to his shit but that should be no more than 5% of the content, emotionally or substantively, of an apology video.
@IDKLOL-qj7sl4 ай бұрын
I think the most concerning part about this is how it looks if you're really taking James' mental health stuff seriously. like... he did do plagiarism. that is something that _cannot possibly_ go on forever without being discovered, and it's also something that people are 100% correct to be upset about. but what we're hearing from him, is that he doesn't have the ability to avoid something that was obviously going to get him in trouble, and he can't handle the trouble he's in, once he's in it. to put this another way... if your mental health is fragile enough that you feel suicidal whenever someone is angry at you, then the _least_ you could do for yourself is not steal from people. sometimes people make small mistakes, like forgetting to do their share of the household chores or something. if you're having a rough day, the people who love you will forgive you. but stealing will _always_ end in you getting caught, and people being mad about it. this is an irresponsible thing to do, _especially_ if you have mental health issues that you know will be triggered when this is all found out. because now we're in a situation where creators have a right to be upset about their hard work getting stolen and monetized... but nobody wants to be responsible for someone getting hurt. and James is basically saying that he nearly died over this. who in their right mind would want to tempt fate like that? this basically puts rightfully angry people in a chokehold. like, okay, James? is there ever gonna be a time when your mental health is strong enough for people to accuse you of the stuff you did? it's just incredibly ironic to me, that a man can be simultaneously capable of stealing so many people's work, but also too fragile to confront. he expects the creators who made the stuff he stole, to be endlessly resilient at the theft of their stuff... but he himself is too delicate to face anyone who notices what he's doing.

This isn't an apology. It's a guilt trip. Not to mention that if you watched the Hbomberguy video, this is the same kind of tactics he used to send his followers threatening someone else who pointed out he was a plagiarist a while ago. I believe nothing he says. He didn't try to unalive himself, he loves himself way too much, he's crying crocodile tears. If anything he's probably more furious than sad cuz he couldn't get away with it the way he always had: By emotionnally manipulating people. Let's also not forget he defrauded people with a fake movie company, and now that he's caught he opens the valves? No. Keep that for the court Mr. Somerton. Because he's lucky if all of this ends without a lawsuit.
@michaeladkins64 ай бұрын
Hes had that money for a couple of years. All kinds of promises on different titles. None have been made as of yet.
@duffman183 ай бұрын
Yep he's taken tens of thousands of dollars from people promising movies, and literally all he's managed to produce is a few movie posters that use stock photographs. That's it. No really. He hasn't even written a single script, even a first draft of a script, a bad script. Let alone get to the point of casting, or filming anything. He went into photoshop, put a title over a stock photo, and then posted it to Twitter. Tens of thousands of dollars. I hope his backers do start a lawsuit. They won't get their money back, or at least if they pay for a lawyer collectively together then they'll break even and won't ever get that money they donated back, but that's not really the point, at this point. Because Somerton is going to keep doing this, defrauding people out of their money, unless he gets a legal smackdown to force him to stop and to give back the money. All of the money. I don't care if he's already spent it.

The fact that Hbomberguy had already highlighted all the manipulative tricks used in this apology also made it crystal clear that James hasn't actually done any real self reflection or tried to do any self improvement. He hasn't addressed the issues. He's just mad and sad because he got caught, and lost his friend and co-writer. The friend he still throws under the bus in this apology video. It’s telling to me that in his whole apology video, James never says “plagiarize” once. He apologizes for “not citing correctly” as if he’s actively trying to still deny that he was passing other people’s knowledge and ideas off as his own.
@duffman183 ай бұрын
He also doesn't seem to understand that EVEN IF he had cited everything perfectly, even IN the video and not just in the description, that STILL would be plagiarism. You can't just read out someone's entire article or chapter from a book and then say it's OK because you cited it. That's still plagiarism, and Somerton knows this, because he has an undergraduate degree. At university, they don't allow you to just copy and paste other people's work as long as you cite them properly at the end. The vast majority of your essay has to be written by YOU, sometimes referencing things other people have said or even using a direct quote, but a quote of, like, a sentence or two. Not entire pages worth of their writing, not even a whole paragraph, unless it's strictly necessary. This is what Internet Historian's fans don't seem to understand either, they think the video is OK as long as he cites it, when it was copied word for word from the article someone else wrote. He didn't just use it as a reference, he just copied and pasted it, maybe sometimes changing one word or two, maybe sometimes showing a joke visually instead of just reading it out, but IH didn't write the script for his video, he just copied and pasted it. It isn't enough to just cite it correctly. If you're claiming the video is your own work, you have to write 95% of it.

It is NEVER on you, it is NEVER your fault. A persons actions or threats of self harm aren't on you, when all you're trying to do is stand up for yourself. or call out things out you don't like. A very intense and targeted campaign of internet harassment is likely to put anyone in the hospital. Maybe you just take what he's saying at face value and recognize that, yeah, while he did some bad shit, maybe having a million people telling him to kill himself isn't the proper response. But no, you hear what he's been through and you say, "Clearly this is an attempt to manipulate me, so I'm just going to keep attacking him." If he didn't plagiarize something you made, why do you care so much? You don't know this guy. You don't need to contribute to his suicide. You participated in this internet hate mob because you enjoy inflicting pain on others, but you're too much of a coward to admit that. So you hide behind your anonymity and you tell yourself it's okay because he's a "bad guy". It's not. Make no mistake; If he does kill himself, you are partially responsible for your contributions. Maybe next time there's some internet controversy, you might find yourself sitting down and shutting the fuck up, instead.

As a former small contributor of James Somerton, this isnt the first time he has manipulated his health to get sympathy. To me the worst part of the allegations wasnt even the plagiarism. He started a kick starter campaign with the promises of future movies and tv shows. He collected thousands of dollars, I forget the exact amount. This was 2? years ago. Not a frame has been shot.
@magicrainbowkitties10235 ай бұрын
To be VERY fuckin clear: That "other shit" he's been accused of is that everything in his videos that wasn't plagiarism (read: the few things he and his cowriter actually wrote themselves) was either a straight up lie, an attempt at spreading misinformation (up to and including saying that American fitness culture comes from American soldiers in WW2 wanting to look like "hot, buff Nazis"), or just him being blatantly and disturbingly misogynistic. There's also a great companion video by Todd In The Shadows going over specifically the misinformation if you have the time. EDIT: Oh yeah there's also his Telos Pictures project, wherein he crowdfunded metric assloads of money from his audience, promising to make a great deal of queer-oriented films for an audience he's convinced that he's the only real queer voice on KZfaq (which is ofc patently absurd), and thus feel even more starved for serious representation than the average queer person. This project was started many years ago, with many films promised between then and now. He has made precisely ZERO of them, and has refused to refund the money thus far. It's literally like outright fraud.

I’ve struggled with mental health issues of a similar severity for many years, and I can’t even imagine using that to emotionally manipulate someone into pitying me. He wants to be a victim so bad, but knows he can’t be, because he made the continuous choice to build his entire reputation on lies and stolen content. These tactics involve never mentioning what he did and speaking in a passive way, rather than an active way. James expressed his apology as "things happened to me" rather than "I did these things". This approach tries to get people to be more concerned with the harm he received rather than the harm he caused. It proves that James has not learned anything from Hbomber's video.

For people who aren't very familiar with this controversy, it wasn't just bc Somerton was accused of palgerism (though that's probably the biggest controversy), but he also has a history of misinterpreting or seemingly making a lot of things up and presenting them as facts, including things that rubbed a lot of the wrong way, such as often saying it's straight women who are most offended by gay content (which A) he didn't provide any actual evidence of and B) many thought came off as misogynistic) or some facts he'd bring up about a certain German political party from the 30's-40's (idk if KZfaq will censor me so I'm not gonna say the name of it, but if you know you know.) Todd In The Shadows has a video debunking a lot of it.
@CadetRedShirt5 ай бұрын
Adding that he made 10k a month painting himself as the only LGBTQ theorist/ analyst on KZfaq, while stealing from other gay and LGBTQ authors and writers. And then he was yes straight up lying about facts for sure, and also making things really scary and mob-mentality thing for attacking people that would question him on the info he had in his videos

And C) people thought it it was ridiculous because straight women is a huge demographic consuming gay movies / books / etc. If anything sexualization and fetishization of gay men is a more wide spread issue among the kind of women who enjoy gay media. For most of them seeing men boinking is the main reason for doing it or at least nice bonus. In some cases (yaoi) gay pron is made by straight women for straight women. They won't get offended with gay sex

_"Straight women are in angry denial about the anime "Yuri on Ice" having gay undertones."_ Anyone who's spent 5 seconds in the anime community knows straight women/girls make up the majority of the audience for gay male dramas; even outside of Japan, it's been a very visible corner of the fandom since at least as far back as the mid-2000's.

@@Shadowcam00 Yeah I remember hearing about this one from Todd. It's literally known as "the gay anime", like there's no way he would believe those words unless he quite literally did no research and tried to portray his biases as fact (which is like 99% what happened).

The thing with this, is that he stole from people for years and punked his audience for years, and now that he got caught, he's sorry, and using heavy handed emotional manipulation to turn anger into sympathy. If he was sorry, he'd have apologised a long long time ago and stopped his rampant plagiarism. If you are sorry once you get caught, then it could be said that the apology was a self-defensive measure to get out of taking responsibility.

It genuinely baffles me how after almost a decade of terrible KZfaqr apology videos people still haven’t learned anything and continue to release new contenders for worst apology vid of all time. They just keep doing everything they’re NOT supposed to do.

@@Anna-hd5wm There are already a lot of paid services, 'media training', 'pr management' etc. that cater to politicians, businesses etc. That's how you can see a lot of these youtubers are not very professional and/ or not very smart. I'm pretty sure you can also google how to write a proper apology, and even ask a chatbot to create one for you!
@davidk74395 ай бұрын
A lot of it is due to a lack of sincerity. Most of the people apologizing, deep down, either don't see what they did as wrong, or don't care. Thus, they don't know how to conduct themselves in a way that communicates a real apology. Usually, they don't take any reformative steps either besides the apology, it's just a half-baked way to try and retain income.
@Simon-tl6hz5 ай бұрын
I think it's because there's no possibly "good" apology for some of the things these youtubers did, and they see emotional manipulation and downplaying as an easier option than just sitting and being fully honest and good faith about their situation

Being “canceled” can really hurt and some people definitely take it too far 😢 but the criticisms against him were valid. His plagiarism and misogyny/transphobia/lesbian-phobia etc were real problems that were so enormous in their scale that; as an LGBTQ+ person I honestly don’t think the community will ever embrace him again. It sucks, but he made his own bed. It’s time to move on and start handing out job applications:( and he has no one to blame for ruining his career but himself.

At this point there’s just no excuse for a bad apology. So many people have done research on what makes an apology effective. It’s actually not that hard to learn how to apologize well

Actually BE sorry! Go look up Drew Gooden/Danny Gonzalez apologizing for "racist" remarks. THAT is how you show that you are truly sorry about something.
@atomdecay5 ай бұрын
Just a forewarning, in Danny's apology, it gets to the point where it feels gross to even be watching someone break down out of shame like that. Like you can really tell how ashamed he is of what he said because he knows it might hurt someone & that's the furthest thing from what he wants to do. I've never seen a youtuber apology where they cried & I genuinely wanted to hug them, but here we are.

@@atomdecay yes! Another good example is Jenna Marbles’ fish apology, or Ethan from H3H3’s apology. There’s channel called Psychology in Seattle, run by a therapist/ psychology professor named Dr. Kirk Honda. He sometimes makes reactions to apology videos, especially popular ones like Colleen Ballinger & Atrioc. He’s actually developed his own 11 steps to an effective apology and i use it as a template every time i owe someone a real apology. He gives all the apology videos grades based on his own 11 steps and I’ve learned so much

Problem with that is that James has to admit he's wrong, and he probably doesn't think what he did was awful. He can't apologize properly if he thinks he's in the right, which I bet he does.
@BombayBerke5 ай бұрын
Of course there’s an excuse for a bad apology, you’re not actually sorry, and you’re just doing it to shut people up. You can’t force people to feel bad for screwing up, and you can’t force a genuine apology. Any apology that’s been coerced loses a lot of its meaning and authenticity. Y’all really need to learn that you can’t force people into genuinely caring about feeling bad about wronging others if they don’t actually feel about wronging someone.
