Another Big Model Train Is Added To My Collection

A model of the Norfolk Southern Railway's First Responders Train is the newest addition to my growing collection of G-scale model trains.
This is one of ten variations of the GE Dash 8 locomotive that you can get from MTH Trains, my favorite manufacturer of G scale model trains. I've found that MTH trains are the highest quality, in spite of selling for significantly less than LGB brand products. In short... a great value!
I now have three varieties of the GE Dash 8 locomotive in my collection. Besides the new Norfolk Southern locomotive, I also have an Amtrak passenger train and a Santa Fe engine. So, that leaves 7 other variations of MTH's Dash 8 still to be collected!
Notice that the Santa Fe locomotive is pulling 17 rail cars behind it. I think that's the longest train that has been in any of my videos, so far.
James The Red Engine also makes a cameo appearance in this video. James arrived at around the same time as the First Responders locomotive, and my next video will focus on James and his friends, Thomas and Percy.

If you're a Jim Zim Super Fan, you may notice a change in the room of my house that our son grew up in. You can see it at the 3:30 point in the video. After our son moved out on his own, this became my "train room"... where I store most of my train stuff. (Some of it also gets stored in the garage, when not in use.) In my past videos, you saw the bed that used to be in that room... which you may remember had white Christmas lights underneath it, which looked pretty cool when the trains passed through. Notice that starting with this video, the bed is gone. I had a train storage crisis! I literally ran out of room to store all my train boxes and train stuff, so I had to make some hard choices. I decided to get rid of the bed, and build another set of storage shelves out of 2x4 lumber. In an homage to the old bed with the Christmas lights under it, I put the Christmas lights under the bottom shelf of the new storage shelf unit, and built it with legs so that the trains could run under it. But this now means that we officially have nowhere to put up visitors for the night, unless they're willing to sleep on the couch in the living room! Luckily, there are a lot of nice hotels in our area...

I also noticed the Piko Clean Machine manufactured by Piko. The Piko Clean Machine is a yellow battery operated track cleaning locomotive that is designed to clean the oxidation off of the G scale model train tracks that have been left outside in the weather for a couple of weeks with no G scale model trains running on it. Sometimes you, Jim Zim, use the Piko Clean Machine as a track tester for when you have a layout particularly built and not wired up to electricity yet. The Piko Clean Machine doesn't need power from the G scale model train tracks to operate. Piko America and TrainWorld have sent the Piko Clean Machine to you for free by Ken Bianco Jr, the son of Ken Bianco Sr of the Bianco family that owns Trainworld. This video shows three of the General Electric Dash 8-40CW diesel locomotives in three different paint schemes of three of the ten different railways made by MTH Electric Trains! They are: Amtrak, Santa Fe Railway and Norfolk Southern Railway in the paint scheme Honoring Our First Responders! That leaves seven of the General Electric Dash 8-40CW diesel locomotives still to be collected! I doubt that you, Jim Zim, will get the Conrail General Electric Dash 8-40CW diesel locomotive in your G scale model train collection!

I'll let you in on some breaking news. MTH has announced some new G-scale locomotives that will be coming out around the beginning of next year. Among them is a Union Pacific EMD F3 locomotive. I've preordered an A-B-A trio of locomotives. Expected delivery in January 2024. mthtrains.com/news/810

There is a train museum called the national toy train museum and they have G scale trains and and right next to national toy train museum is a hotel called the red caboose and there are there are these cabooses that have bin converted in to hotel rooms and at national toy train museum they is MTH brand trains and the national toy train museum is the biggest toy train museum in the US and this is all in strasburg PA

Do you have some inside information that I don't have? They haven't released their 2019 catalog, as far as I know... so I don't know anything about what's coming out next from MTH. I'd love to know! They really are my favorite G-scale manufacturer.

Oh, OK then! See, you've got better information than I do! I guess I have that to look forward to. What I found with the 2017 catalog is that the items in it weren't actually available until 2018. So, I guess we'll see that SD70 in the 2019 catalog but it will probably be another year before anyone can actually get one.

Thanks for sharing! I've haven't seen any MTH trains in G scale in my area (Los Angeles). Based on the information on the internet, it appears MTH is 1:32 scale. Do you have any LGB trains that you could show in a side by side scale comparison? I'd much rather purchase locomotives with DCC already installed, but have a hard time finding any other than LGB (which run $1000 for diesel). Thanks again for the information.

Rlly good recreation.... my only issue is that 9-1-1 is actually a SD60E, not a Dash 8. Still a very very beautiful engine

Can I ask what coupler system you are using, I know the engine is MTH, but it looks like you have some USA cars in there!

On the Amtrak loco and the First Responders loco I am using the knuckle couplers that come pre-installed on MTH locomotives. On the Santa Fe loco, I changed out the knuckle couplers and put on hook and loop couplers, so I could pull my LGB brand rolling stock. The hook and loop couplers come in the box with the MTH locomotives, and they are pretty easy to install. I don't have any USA cars in my collection at all.

I know MTH Electric Trains makes the General Electric Dash 8-40CW diesel locomotives in the paint schemes of ten different railways, but which one of the General Electric Dash 8-40CW diesel locomotives in the paint schemes of the seven railways are you, Jim Zim, will get next? You, Jim Zim, love the General Electric Dash 8-40CW diesel locomotives so much, that you have got three of them in there different paint schemes including Amtrak #500, Santa Fe Railway #868 in the Warbonnet paint scheme of red, yellow, black and silver and Norfolk Southern Railway Honoring Our First Responders diesel locomotive #911! You also have the BNSF EMD SD70ACE AH diesel locomotive #9370 from MTH Electric Trains in the swoosh paint scheme! Edit: You will have a Union Pacific locomotive in your G scale model train collection and that will make 27 G scale model trains in all!

Do you use DCC? If so what system do you have and are all the features on MTH locos compatible with it?

Yes, I use an MRC Prodigy Wi-Fi system. It's a 10 amp system, so you can run 3 or 4 G-scale trains on it at the same time. I actually have two of them, in case I want to set up two independent systems and run more than 4 locos at once. Also, I have an analog power supply that I can use if I want to run analog equipment such as the Coca Cola train or James The Red Engine. Regarding the MTH locomotives... yes, they run perfectly on the MRC power supply and I control them from an Android tablet. The MRC Wi-Fi system works on either Android or Apple devices. I like controlling it that way much better than using a traditional train control unit.

I've noticed that you just set up trains on the floor with no scenery. Now that your son is on his own and you have a train area do you plan to make a layout or modules with scenery?

No, that's not really the part of model railroading that interests me. There are all sorts of KZfaq channels where people have spent years working on intricate layouts with detailed scenery... but that's just not my thing! I like making slightly different layouts each time I set up my trains, and I just get a kick out of running different trains around the house and making videos about it.

No, you must be confused about that part! I've only ever done G-scale videos. The only time a HO train appeared in one of my videos was in one video I showed a HO caboose next to a G-scale caboose as a size comparison.

The real locomotive is an EMD SD60E. Not even close....sorry. The locomotive you used in the video is Training First Responders. Its an EMD GP38-2. It usually pulls the safety train

Correct me if I'm wrong... but I don't think any of the USA Trains have DCC built in to them. At least they didn't when last I checked. I have admired the look of a lot of the USA Trains, but I run a DCC system and I don't want to mess around with having to modify the locomotive and add in a controller. I like that the MTH locomotives are ready to run on DCC right out of the box. All you have to do is flip one little switch on the bottom of the loco to tell it that it should be looking for a DCC signal.

Jim Zimmerlin MTH is affordable great quality products. I do o gauge and ho gauge. Used to have a g scale for a little over 2 years but it was too expensive and hard to clean plus I didn’t like hurting my yard digging holes. I do all the manufactures in both ho and o scale. I love your videos

Actually (no hate) but there is a flaw in the real thing. It’s actually based off of NS 9-1-1 which is a SD60E. This is just a what if look on what the paint scheme would be like on a dash 8.

Yes, someone else pointed that out, too... the real thing is a SD60E. I didn't pick up on that when I saw it, but to people that know their trains really well, that's a big deal!

The track is pretty strong, so you can step on it as long as you don't put your full body weight on it. Or at least as long as I don't put MY full body weight on it! My wife is a tiny thing half my size... she could probably put her full body weight on the track and not damage it at all! ha ha ha Also, the thing that I think a lot of people don't realize when they watch my train videos is that our house doesn't have track running all over it every day... just for a couple of days, while I have fun with the trains and make a new video. Then it all gets put away again, until next time. It wouldn't be unusual for the tracks to be set up for two days and then to be put away for a month. So, we're not stepping over tracks every day, like some people probably imagine! You're just days away from a great cruise... have fun!!!

No, I don't think that will be one for my collection. Since my storage space is not unlimited, and since G scale locomotives are expensive, I only buy ones that I'm really passionate about.

You can keep the Norfolk Southern Railway Honoring First Responders Train #911. But, you will soon have the BNSF EMD SD70ACE diesel locomotive #9370 equipped with DCC. Which by the way, stands for Digital Command Control. And as soon as you get that, then that will still have seven different railways of the General Electric Dash 8-40CW diesel locomotives still to be added to your collection of G scale model trains in the future. Um... That's not a real locomotive, the real NS 911 is an sd60e by emd. They never did a dash 9 in that paint scheme. I don't know why MTH made that.

Wow, you're actually right! I had to look that up to see if what you said was true, and it was! Well, I guess it was an easy thing for MTH to do as a Dash 8 since they already had the production capabilities for making G-scale Dash 8s. They would have had to make an entirely new model from scratch to do it as a SD60... and that would have been cost prohibitive.

Tight spaces here in my house! The UP Big Boy can't do R1 curves... so I think that will have to wait a few years until we move in to our dream home, which will have a lot more space and which should allow a Big Boy to run.
