Күн бұрын

It's another crappy day on the farm! Pork belly is smoking and the manure is flying. Today I'm using the OLD McCormick Deering 10-20 and the Farmall MD to pull the manure spreader. The manure spreader is a New Idea 12A, and the loading tractor is a Farmall 656. It's a beautiful spring day!

Your videos are my most favorite of all. It is comforting to watch you manage your small farm just as my father managed his when I was a kid. Our farm was larger, but he had the same philosophy of use what you have, take care of what you have, don’t go into debt and thinking you NEED the biggest and newest equipment. It’s nice to know that there are still nice and ‘normal’ folks still around this world who are a joy to listen to, laugh at a few dad jokes and keep things simple. Nothing like the smell of manure spreading in the spring! All the kids on the bus would hold their nose and yell Pee-yew…it kept us all humble us farm kids! Blessings to Hilliary and you! Keep up the good work.

I am certain there are several viewers like myself who grew up on a farm but left it all behind to shake the world. We find ourselves trapped in suburbia, surrounded by ever encroaching urban “improvement”. Every flat place around me has a building or home going up. Thank you for the brief respite you provide that never fails to bring back memories both good, and some not so good. I thoroughly enjoy each episode, thank you once again.

Rick, Your words ring true for me. I grew up on my grandfather's farm and couldn't wait until I was old enough to go out on my own......now, almost 50 years later, I wish I still had the opportunity to back and live on his farm..... but unfortuntely it is now owned by someone else. Boy was I dumb back then.

I started watching this video and my husband (who retired from general surgery last Thursday) came up and stood behind my chair at the sound of the tractor, then sat down and watched the whole video with me. He loves tractors and plans to tinker in this new stage of life. At the end of the video he said with a smile, “What a gentle man.” He knows I watch and appreciate your channel, and I have read excerpts of your book out loud to him. That MD is gorgeous, a real showpiece. It is amazing how well we built tractors in those years: before timed obselescence became popular with our manufacturers. I was born in 1950 and we bought a ranch in Northern California in 1953. We had that exact same manure spreader but it was a darker red, sort of burnt red, burgandyish. We grew our own Oat hay for our horses and bought in the Alfalfa. Best years of my life! Should be a fun spring watching all the things you are involved with. Have enjoyed your channel and look forward to more.

@JustaFewAcresFarm

@@A_p_T53040 Needless to say, I disagree. Composted manure has everything chemical fertilizer has, plus a whole lot more. It contains nutrients immediately available to the plants and soil, fantastic amounts of NPK, beneficial bacteria, and many trace minerals. And it does not acidify the soil.

@@JustaFewAcresFarm Paul Fonder is a You Tuber from near Watertown SD. He is certified organic. I don't believe he uses nothing but manure. I wonder what is take is about this. My Dad has been using composted manure all my life (just like you Pete) we never had any need for any other fertilizer either. Sometimes he put a little lime on the fields. I can't remember if you talked about this or not Pete but do you take soil samples ever??
@JustaFewAcresFarm
@JustaFewAcresFarm 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Anthony, I take soil samples every few years. The biggest impact I have seen from our practices is the stabilization of PH. Around here farmers apply lots of lime to bring the PH up. Our PH started at around 5.5, but has now stabilized at 7. This is a direct result of not applying chemical fertilizer. Soil organics have held steady at 5.5%. I think it takes many many years to build organic matter.
@anthonyhengst2908
@anthonyhengst2908 2 жыл бұрын
@@JustaFewAcresFarm I agree. We farm about 360 tillable acres and we maybe apply a total of 1 ton of lime over the whole works once every 3 years or so. Some of our land is very low and that is where it is the most acidic. (pH - 3.5-3.7).

I spent a lot of time with my paternal Grandfather. He farmed with a lot of the same equipment you are. There was nothing he couldn't fix or get running. He also built a wood splitter from scratch and it was attached to the three point hitch and used the tractor hydraulics (He used it on his Massey Furgeson). When I watch you I am transported back to my childhood and my Grandpa. It was great times for me. He used to have the corn picker attachment for his H Farmall. I remember being in the wagon behind the tractor as he picked whole ear corn. I remember him plowing and I was running the disc over his fields so he could plant corn and soybeans. We had a bale catcher that kicked the bale on the wagon and then we stacked it. He had an elevator (not the kind people use to go from floor to floor, it is tractor PTO driven) we used to send it to the top of the barn. We also raised pigs, cattle and chickens. We had hay, corn, soybeans and tobacco. My Grandfather was a product of the Depression and wasted little. One thing people today will not understand is the evolution of agriculture. When I was quite young, the pigs were almost square because they were raised for the lard. The cattle were also square shaped. The breeding of animals and feeding them has seen huge strides. I would consider it a part of the upscaling you described in one of your videos. I watch mainly for nostalgic reasons. I like watching the overhauling of your equipment because it takes me back to watching my Grandpa repairing the same equipment. I am so glad you finally put in the partition for the pigs. It will save a lot of pigs for you. My Grandpa used to say that, "Pigs can either get you out of the poor house or put you in it!" So I understand your dilemma over raising them. It seems the pork cycle can be brutal. We went through a spell of raising feeder pigs. We also had a lot more pigs than you (about 20 sows). I do hope you get your garden up and running. Start with easy stuff like sweet corn and tomatoes. Success will breed success. Just think about the garden as part of your self sufficiency program. Don't forget to compost it. The pig manure is excellent fertilizer as well. The chicken manure is good for adding nitrogen to the soil and would be better on your garden anyway! Always fun to watch!

You are amazing with your old tractors. Your rebuilding and making them pretty and still run. Your ‘F’ tractor I think you called it looks like our ild ‘M’ tractor. No power steering…..none of us kids wanted to drive it after Daddy got the first power steering tractor, a Cockshut. It was yellow-ish tractor. Then later on….806 International. A beautiful tractor! Then a few years later we got the 1066 International with dual back wheels. The tractor Daddy started me out on when I was 5 or so was the Allis Chalmers tractor. We had a small, very low to the ground trailer and I’d drive/steer around the bales and Daddy would walk around and load 10-12 bales of hay for the cattle. I loved it! It was a small orange tractor with a lever I could push that would make the tractor coast to a stop. Since I couldn’t reach the brake it still worked for me. Great times with my father. Thank you for. Ringing great childhood memories back to me.

I still remember the day my Dad called it quits on the farm and took our Farmall md 30 to the implement dealer to resell. I rode with him crying the whole way. I still get a twinge whenever I see this particular tractor. Still represents a wonderful time of my life. Thanks for your channel and for first of all the nostalgia your farm represents for me (can almost remember the smells of fresh hay and grass) and second of all for sharing your story with all of us that get to relive those days. Warm hugz from Los Angeles 😬.

After the salt storm from the dry lake, year 2 of drought on the backside of the Rockies begins for our farm. I come to you for calm and good advice. Your tractor obsession is part of that, fun to watch.
