It's not like it use to be we were just barely able to walk and we were on tractors like the old Farmall m and h with the clamshell fenders and open tires inches from us. Today you put a kid on a lawn tractor and god forbid you are endangering them. It's all part of dumbing down society. I praise anyone who teach their kids real skills and allow them to jump in and learn.

@@bitspieces3885 these people who believe they are protecting children by not allowing them to live and learn aren't doing anything good for the children they raising a helpless entitled generation that can't do anything for theirselves but yet they all expect $20 or more an hour wage with a $2 an hour work ethic. We have a farm here in east ny near Albany, We milk around 100 cows and usually have 100-150 dry cows and heifers we aren't big by no means just a small family farm and the people that have came through the barn in the 20-25 years makes you wonder how they dress themselves and they all expect high wages more than what us owners make ourselves. They are lazy, show up when they feel like, have no pride in anything, I'm in my upper 40s I have pins and plates in my legs, 2 replacement discs in my back and due for a knee replacement in the next 8 months and my other family members on the farm are early 60s one has Afib and the other is one eyed and us 3 older guys can still unload hay wagon every 15-20 minutes and a few weekends ago we had 6 teens come to unload wagons and it took them 40-45 minutes a wagon and we just shook our heads here we are old guys we are in the barn from 5 in the morning till usually 9 at night and we can unload wagons every 15-20 minutes and these teen take twice as long and our wagons aren't even stacked like they use to be when my grandfather was alive we get 125-150 bales kicked on our wagons we use to stack wagons 4 to 5 tiers above the racks when I was a teen and we use blow through them like nothing unloading them because we were being paid by the wagon and we use to be able to make bank on hay days alot more than being paid by the hour and we still pay by the wagon today and when we tell kids we pay $8 a wagon they leave but if you are working and think about what they can make they can make money and we try to explain it to them and they are loss, unload 4-5 wagons an hour you make $30-$40 an hour if we pay you by the hour it's gonna be between $10-$14 an hour and you aren't gonna take an hour to unload a wagon and if you do we can't use you. Some of the other local farm kids come and help if they don't have anything going on on their farms and most of them are happy with $5 a wagon. It's a sad world out there today and I feel sorry for most of the kids because they have no clue what is missed.Most of the old generations will tell you farming is work yet some of the best memories that many people hold onto were made on a farm nothing like being a child and out on a tractor raking or tedding hay or pulling wagons in and out of barnyard or having all your buddies with you making working bets of who can stack faster or neater or unload faster all while getting the work done. I have taught my kids many of the farmer's ethics and skills and even though neither one want to be on the farm and do the farm life they still make me proud of what they do and both work hard for what they have and don't expect handouts.
