The phrase “ rode hard and put up wet” was a favorite of my late husband who was born in1934. It refers to riding a horse and not allowing it to cool down and brushing it before putting it up in the barn. He used it as you did. Something that looks a mess as we say in the south.

I'm from the South. Housewives here not only saved their bacon grease, but they used it in every meal! Eggs were fried in bacon grease. A couple of tablespoons, or more, went into just about every vegetable they cooked... Green beans, black-eyed peas, beans EVERYTHING. We had a meal with my aunt some years ago. She had just been told by the doctor not to use bacon grease in her cooking. She apologized for not having any "seasoning" in her vegetables. Also kind of ironic that the George Washington commemorative dishes were made in England 🙄

Yum for the forbidden bacon grease. I remember my daddy frying eggs in it and, instead of turning the eggs over, he spooned hot grease over the top until they were done. Yes, I am from the South.

I can remember those dolls from the early 50s with very large circular dresses made out of some kind of paper filters tied with yarn to set on the chenille bedspread in a girls room. And then too, very "DOILY looking crocheted big circular dresses for the bed . Mine was crocheted. They were some kind of early plastic with eyes that opened and closed, but not always at the same time😁 The arms were held together with an elastic that sometimes dry rotted but the legs were not moveable. Ahhhh...not for playing ...just for "looking" my momma would say👵🦋💖

Since you didn’t bring your reading glasses to the kitchen one must help with the reading.... that flat dish with handles, lemon dish? is Rosenthal and looks handmade, as they are suppliers of plain white porcelain for artist to do their handwork on porcelain at home. But Rosenthal is maybe THE most successful German porcelain maker and is alive and kicking today and still highly appreciated all over the world with some of their 1960’s and 1970’s pieces worth a good money today. From their more classical China to the special collections. Rosenthal hired Danish designer Bjørn Wiinblad for special annual plaques and Christmas series with plates and vases and those series from the 70’s are still highly collectible today. His colorful plates with heavy golden accents are to die for. You wouldn’t let one pass by without notice. Btw, that Indiana plate is marked Holland, not England 🤓

Everything tastes better with bacon fat, every week the hubby cooks up some bacon for breakfast to renew the supply, use it in all cooking, but its kept on the stove in a soup mug the handle broke off of, with a plastic spoon through a cottage cheese lid - soon I am going to find a designer container so it looks pretty.

Hey there, Scott. My mother still saves the grease...bacon and otherwise. She saves the oil in which she fries chicken and it's in a jar in the refrigerator as we speak. A little of that oil gets poured into the pinto beans that she cooks, and they are the best ever. When I was growing up, the grease was put in a Shawnee corn grease jar. (I bet that it's still in the cabinet at my parent's house.) I guarantee that there was no grease left during WWII to take to the butcher. Nice grouping of uranium glass. Bargain Barons would be drooling.

Thank you for Highlighting my comment! That grease jar is the it girl of this blog! The Dolls reminded me of my childhood. I used to make them clothes. You would have gotten a laugh. I think a little girl did the clothes. The knitted one was a grandma gift. I can imagine a little girl throwing the dolls in the air. Taking the arms off to dress the doll. Then forgetting where l put the doll's arms. Of course the dolls went to the Spa in the bird bath. Oh well that's all of my musings.💮🌼🌼🌻🏵️🌸🌸🌺🌺🌷🌷🌹💐💐🌹🌺🍃🍃🌿🌹🌺🍀🍀🏵️🌻🍁🍁🌼🌼💮🌾🌾🌼🌼🌻🍁🍂🏵️🌸🍀☘️☘️🍃🌿🌿🌱💐🌹🌷🌺🌸🏵️🌻🌼💮🌾🍁🍂🍀☘️🌿🌿🌹🌹🌺🏵️🏵️🌻💮🌲🌲🌾🍁🌻🌼💮💮💮🌲🍁🍂🍀🍃🌿

I may have some information on the tall heavy clear flower vase. 30 years ago I worked at a flower shop with an elderly designer. He would tell me about his grandfathers flower shop many years ago. I was given a 1930s rose vase that was used then. It’s 2 feet tall and extremely heavy. They actually sent roses out to customers in these!!! Times have changed and we now pay big money for thin glass in the business. If it’s thick we must charge a lot more. I’m wondering if the vase you have was saved by someone who received flowers.

Haha! Those really are the ugliest salt and pepper dispensers, but the funny thing is as soon as I saw them I got excited, lol. We had those for camping when I was little - I guess because they could be packed away, and there were no holes for the salt and pepper to fall out of, because you had to push the buttons to have it fall out of the bottom. So funny! All these years, I've never thought of them and then I see them and it sparks all these memories. Even the smells of the cabinets in the camper trailer...

Hi, your plate is by Rosenthal, and they still produce beautiful china and porcelain. I really love their MCM items. I 'm not sure it's a lemon plate, usually the handle is on top of the plate. Tfs

Scott, Those Christmas boxes bring back so many childhood memories. Especially the "Noma" brand. Just a little heads up. If I recall, that tinsel is made of lead (that's what made it fireproof) and will start to slough off. Just something to keep in mind if you decide to use it and Salem shows some interest in it. (Really?!? "Guess what, chicken butt?" Mind if I use that line?)

Rode hard and put up wet is a cowboy horse phrase, meaning the worst way to care for something/hard life, so it fits and isn't offensive. But today I guess it means more and those dolls just made me laugh and laugh. Is that a depression glass, Millennial pattern pink coaster? Looks like it got skipped in the haul. I collect all that for my son.

We had pink bathroom fixtures in our house in Brooklyn, but I'm guessing pink would have dated them to the 50s. That Indiana plate was made in Holland. Love the graphics on the Christmas items. I think Vinny found the male s&ps and you found the female ones. One more edit: Is the shelf on the top of the toaster to keep toast warm, for protection from burning yourself, or both? Hello, Mr. Salem.

Brit here Scott... I have a few vintage "Dripping" pieces by Mason Cash and TG Green. Some actually say "Pork Drippings". I loved the little advert you shared. It's always fun to watch how they advertised things back then to housewives. Do you happen to know the pattern name for the candy dish ? My hairdresser just gave me a bunch of stuff (I need to make a video about it), one of which was a console bowl and candlesticks in the same pattern. I'd love to find out if you know. Lastly, I picked up a book of 20's & 30's lighting, and didn't know if you already had that copy. I've sent you an email. Thanks for another great video. PS - I like you delivery style, I get extra happy when a new video pops up! Those dolls were definitely " a hot mess" All the best -Di

Oh thank you so very much! I'm a bit behind on my emails and plan to catch up tonight. I'll be sure to respond to you about the lighting book. Now the candy dish.....are you talking about the little blue delphite dish in the shape of a leaf or the covered green dish with the gold edging?Thanks for watching all the way across the pond!

Ugly salt & pepper shakers are made by Carvanite Los Angeles CA. They came in that 1930's green you like so much as well--like your coffee cup's color and bathroom fixtures.

What an interesting story on the drippings jar! Do you know why they took it to the meat market?
@oldcuriosityshop265
@oldcuriosityshop265 4 жыл бұрын
Yes. The local butcher was a collector for the community in which he served. Workers from some branch of the U.S. government would make rounds and collect the grease for the war effort. It was then shipped to the factories and literately processed and used to make explosives!
