Naruto, One Piece, and Bleach wouldn't exist without Toriyama; Gen 1 Pokemon was heavily inspired by Monster Quest; Chrono Trigger was one of the first (If not THE first) video games to incorporate multiple endings. Toriyama shaped the anime/gaming community, and I can safely say anime wouldn't exist in the west if it wasn't for Toriyama.

Not to be rude here, but you give Toriyama way too much credit. He only made art cover panels and lended his artstyle to 3 other artists who had to animate and did the pixel art of the whole game of Chrono trigger compared to some few illustration Toriyama did. Not to mention chrono trigger is foremost great because of the gameplay and story, the rest are spinkles on top. Anime would have existed and did exist in the west with shows like Astro Boy + some other minor shows, and even then Togashi was right around the corner with yu yu hakusho which we would have got + sailor moon by Naoko. Pokemon was inspired by insects that Satoshi Tajiri tried to catch when he was little.. and Digimon was inspired by american comics, and both those shows would have been made no matter what.

Chrono Trigger was not the first game to incorporate multiple endings. Hell, Dragon Quest V from 1992 had multiple endings. Castlevania II had multiple endings, as did Castlevania III, and they are from the 80s. Also it's fine to not be into retro games, but if you are making statements like "this is the first game to do (blank)" then maybe you should be a little bit more knowledgeable You also forget that Dragon Quest II set the template for 70% of JRPGs, but people only mention it when it comes to Pokémon

@@WieldMyWord I doubt Pokémon would exist without the Dragon Quest series. And Togashi would not make Yu Yu Hakusho without Toriyama, as Togashi was inspired by Dragon Ball. Battle manga would exist, but it would not be the same. Although I defintely agree that anime breaking out in the west was basically inevitable, but the fact that Dragon Ball was the main export gives it significance.

@@WieldMyWordwhile you have a point with some stuff here curb your Pokémon take because you can literally look up a side by side comparison online of dragon quest monster and gen 1 pokemon. Yuyu hakusho manga released in 1991 around the same time dragonball reached namek saga in dragonball anime on top of that the manga released in 1984. now do we have to give full credit for everything existing because of toriyama? No, but you’d have to be dumb to not atleast say they atleast took some inspiration. And I’m not claiming dragonball invented the transformation troupe but they definitely popularized it globally I believe it was super sentai first then maybe sailor moon then dragonball but who knows who had it in there brain first

It's literally insane how much Toriyama has done in this world. He helped to put RPGs on the map, codified the battle manga genre after Ring ni Kakero, Kinnikuman, and Fist of the North Star collecting all of it into an amazing story. Not to disregard those previous manga, as they are excellent, but Toriyama really made something special. Dragon Quest III is one of my favorite RPGs ever as well, and if you haven't played Dragon Quest III, I highly recommend it, and I love the Dragon Ball manga as it made me fall in love with comics as an adult, and really respect the medium now because of Toriyama. Garnt and Connor, you need to read the Dragon Ball manga, and maybe play Dragon Quest in addition to Chrono Trigger. I mean Chrono Trigger, Dragon Quest III and Dragon Quest V are some of the best RPGs ever made.

Completely agree. Chrono Trigger, Dragon Quest V and Dragon Quest VII are some of my favorite games of all time (CT being my favorite in general), and the Dragon Ball manga shaped my childhood, and obviously, the childhood of millions of people, alongside the ones that are still being influenced by his art and characters. Saying he was a legend is an understatement.

@@MatheusSM1000 Yeah, and it's always a shame when western RPG fans are like "play Chrono Trigger, it's considered the best JRPG ever made." But you know what else is considered the best JRPG ever made? Dragon Quest III. Dragon Quest V. Dragon Quest VIII. I mean Dragon Quest III and Dragon Quest V have topped numerous "best game of all time" polls, it's insane. Not to knock Chrono Trigger, it deserves it, but it's weird to only mention Chrono Trigger. I guess I'm biased as Dragon Quest III is one of my favorite RPGs regardless of region.

What I love about most about Goku is that he was friend with everybody , specially with people who tried to kill him . Think about it 80% of Goku's friends are people who had tried to kill him , even Bulma! The entire staff of that movie feels like they owe some kind of penance for that movie. I remember reading about how one of the writers for Stranger Things back in the day worked on Evolution, and felt the need to make one of the characters a huge Dragon Ball fan as a sort of apology for doing a bad job for Evolution. It's kinda weird, like I appreciate that they understand how bad the movie was but also it's been like 15 years. It would be like if M Night was making all of his main characters ATLA fans as penance for his adaptation. It's certainly odd.

@@corrinflakes9659Dragonball didn’t get to America until the late 90s and I think it was cancelled and brought back in the 2000s. So basically, big 3 anime (Naruto, Bleach, and One Piece) and Dragon Ball were like the first anime a lot of people in the anime fandom figured out or knew already were anime. Whereas before we might’ve watched anime, but these were always framed as American cartoons and many foreign aspects were changed to fit in with American culture instead so these shows wouldn’t stand out or be obviously foreign. So a lot of us didn’t know Pokémon and other titles were anime when we watched them on tv. We didn’t know any better until the fansub era online in the 2000s. I don’t know about the relevance to Stranger Things. Although, Dragon Ball, while it came later to America, it’s actually a story from the 80s. Anime in ‘86 and the manga in ‘84. While most audiences wouldn’t see DB until later when it would air on American tv 📺 , there were lots of animanga fans in the past. It just took a lot more to be a fan back then. Still fans of those times got crafty and even had ways to fansub for each other before the internet made it easier. Through the mail. Stranger Things takes place with kids from the past, right? That’s all I know about that franchise. And they have powers.

I think it was a poster in the background of season 1. It was never a plot point but I remember it being mentioned in an interview once. Yeah DB didn't blow up in the US until the 90s but there was an underground anime fandom that existed in the 80s. Hell a lot of the stories surrounding Eleven in the early seasons seem to draw a lot of inspiration from Elfein Leid, which didn't come out until the 2000s. So it's not to far fetched. I could be mistaken though, Mandela Effect and all

On the point of lashing out at non fans "paying respects" to Toriyama sensei... Dragonball is the most important thing to ever happen to me. It got me through a bunch of (insert stereotypical sob story origin) when I was young. Then as an adult I used Goku's tenacious outlook on life to keep pushing forward every day. "I can do this as long as I'm better than I was yesterday, even if it's just a little bit." Fighting tooth an nail against poverty and mental illness, I would've taken my own life multiple times if not for the Turtle Hermit Way.... Until his passing they way people would talk about Dragonball was generally uncomfortable for me. They would see a hot mess of power scaling and drawn out fights between unrealistic, one note characters. But I saw a beautiful, violent symphony of hard work and dedication triumphing over born privilege and power. After listening to people bash it for 2 decades, it's hard to watch people post about their favorite Dragonball moment. Idk if it's my grief that's making me gatekeep Dragonball, but I know it feels bad watching folks talk shit for 20+ years, refuse to put respect on the man that brought anime to the global market, then suckle his nuts the second he's death trending. That being said, I will never stop. My life will continue to be one of millions of microscopic blips across the planet that have come together to become the permanent, beating heart of Dragonball. Bit by bit, you're charming my heart, A piece of the hopes of this world. Rest peacefully, Toriyama

Ill quote Iker Ruiz "Creation is the only thing that makes us immortal Akira Toriyama, the creator of Dragon Balls has sadly passed away at the age of 68, the man who marked not only my childhood and that of many other children, filling it with emotion and lessons. because we all got to feel that tingling before each episode when listening to the opening, We all tried to comb our hair like a vegeta with the shower soap, and we all tried to do a Kamehameha at one point. because Toriyama's work went beyond simple battles between heroes and villains, there we found valuable lessons about friendship, courage, perseverance and self-improvement. Through his characters, Toriyama taught us that true power lies in the spirit and in the bonds we forge with those around us. His work transcended beyond the screen, managing to influence even several Mangakas, Musicians, artist, game developers, cartoonist, animators, actors, film makers, politicians and some of the most important athletes in the world with his values. He was responsible for universalizing something as popular today as anime throughout the planet. and today, Akira Toriyama has left us with one last lesson before leaving, teaching us that creation is the only path to immortality and today it is not the man you created who cries, but the child you helped to grow. Dear Akira Toriyama thank you for everything"

@@Doctor4077Ehh A little, but not all of us are comic book or superhero fans. So, a little, but a tad less. Maybe more than a tad, truthfully. Toriyama is important to anime fans, manga fans, gamers, regular people, and he’s even more beloved in Latin America specifically. So many different communities worldwide. I heard about Stan Lee and enjoyed learning about his impact even if I wasn’t a huge fan of the content he made and didn’t care for American comics. Still because I’m not a fan, it’s harder to have as much of a connection to his passing. And I feel bad, but I kinda forgot about his passing until I learned about it again. I also forgot about Yugioh author’s passing even though I loved Yugioh so much I consumed it multiple times in every version I could find of it. Duel Momsters. 😂 Toriyama became a smiley face when I was trying to edit and got auto-corrected. Even Apple seems to have fixed their systems to show support of Toriyama.

They kinda just said what has already been said about this topic and to name an episode "Saying Goodbye to a Legend" but only discussing it for 10 minutes feels a bit weird. I was curious for what they had to say but it seems their take is a bit cliche for me and I do appreciate them mentioning it but it didnt seem like any different from what others have said. Thats just what I have gotten from the clip alone.
@the-aspiring-creator4249
@the-aspiring-creator4249 5 ай бұрын
I mean... is there anything else that needs to be said? Toriyama's death sucks. It's losing yet another manga legend in a set of years where they just keep dropping off. I mean we lost Leiji Matsumoto last year, there's Kazuki Takahashi and of course the big one with Kentaro Miura and by this point, it's been a few weeks since he passed. Really every single possible thing that could be said about Toriyama has been said, you have people who have talked for hours about the man after he passed. Like really the only new take would be for someone to be completely disrespectful in which case they'd be rightfully raked over the coals for.

@@the-aspiring-creator4249 Fair play. I just happened to notice thats what it felt like. Kinda felt like they just had to get the topic out the way almost and knowing how much they arent all mega Dragon Ball fans, they werent insanely passionate about it which I guess makes sense but it just felt generic the way they were speaking about it. It was also predictable knowing Joey would replay Chrono Trigger. Its kinda why I just watched a clip instead of full episode. Trash Taste has felt so up and down after episode 100.

@@jamesb687 I think it's natural for it to feel like that because honestly with Toriyama, he's one of those legends where I genuinely think you could spend hours going through all his manga covering his influence from top to bottom and it still won't feel like enough and while they were obviously gonna talk about it because this is massive news in the anime and manga community? It's weird that there's this expectation that they should discuss it and dedicate as much of the podcast to it because honestly? There's not much to be said that hasn't been said before. Like I think if you want a good tribute to Toriyama? You just need to look at how many quote tweets of the message of his passing were made, how the world just stopped for a moment with no fights or stupid bullshit just to mourn. That is far more powerful than what three guys on a podcast could manage.

No, mine was Kenshin back in 2008-9. Also, I watched InuYasha and Ranma at the same time. I kind of got introduced to them at the same time period. Still, I saw the original DB early on in my fandom. First 15-20 anime seen maybe. Just guessing. Never got to Z and onwards. I was sad to hear the news. And to find out we (as fans) didn’t even know of his passing until a week or more later. Though, I completely understand. More power to the family. It was just a shock. Of course, not nearly the shock the family might’ve had. His death sounded like a surprise. Comments I saw said that’s usually the cause of death for people who have a blunt force injury to the head. Like he might’ve fallen or something.

They're just not DB obsessives where every waking moment for them is that series and as they said, you don't have to be a major fan to pay respects because it's sad either way to lose such a massive creative influence.
