In this studio update, I finish constructing the LEGO city table frames and start screwing down the tops! It is HUGE! Oh my, am I ever excited! Everything is going according to plan... BUT... there seems to be one misalignment. With that said I think the issue is manageable and the LEGO city tables will be good to go right away!

If you’re really worried about the square of the table frame. Measure diagonally corner to corner. It’s likely off, just shift your frame until both measurements match.

the only way he could have made sure the top was perfectly level is while constructing the frames to use a jointer on every piece of wood to ensure they were perfect which takes a lot of time. and use the table saw for the legs not a chop saw as the table saw is capable of cutting them better

@@masterchief1507 ya table saw is more accurate. Chop saws have too much side to side bend movement on all of them. Another thing is use an accurate tape measure or at least the same one if he's using more than one especially different brands they will be off unless it's a known wood working tap measure that's accurate to table saws.

Bricksie, you're trying hard. The only way to square it up, is a full corner to corner measurement. But with everything bolted together now, it would be really hard to adjust. Honestly, don't stress it. Nobody but you will ever even notice. But very glad you ignored the annoyance of the different looking legs and added that additional support. That was the right thing to do.

I think you got to it at the end of the video. Get out all your baseplates (not just a row or two) and lay them all over the tables to see how everything really lines up - all along the perimeter and to and from the access holes. Then figure out how to adjust from there or determine what you’re willing to live with. Also, you seem like a visual person - you may be happier if all the legs were the same color; now may be a good time to address that before all the tops are fastened on.

The table looks great. To answer your question as to why the table is out of square to the frame is fairly simple. The frame itself is slightly out of square. I don't see it being a big deal myself. But if you did want to adjust it only only one side has to move. When you are dealing with such a large area, it doesn't take much to be out of square. The only time you will really notice it is when you are creating the subway system around the perimeter of the table.

Wow!!! It looks so much more massive with the tops on the tables!!! I wouldn't worry too much about the variance across the entire span, dimensional lumber always has a certain amount of warpage, it's probably more important that the melamine sheets are aligned with the first sheet you screwed down, so that the table tops will be squared away, for the base plates to align properly. This will be an absolute killer city. Amazing job!

To get it perfectly square, temporarily nail a sting diagonally from 1 corner to the other of the table frame. Do this on each coner, and where the 2 strings intersect is the exact center. Your table is probably a parallelogram instead of a square. Push on a corner to get the intersection to the exact center.

I think the best way is to use the 3-4-5 theory to check your square line. you must have for example 3 and 4 feet on each side of your right angle and the hypotenuse will be 5 feet. In your case with very large tables... you can make small marks on the 2x4s with even larger measurements. 3 meters, 4 meters with a hypotenuse of 5 meters.

So many experts on here - advice is fine but honestly sometimes it can be over-bearing and come across as being negative. I’m a floor layer and I had so much advice on laying those carpet tiles and I just kept it all to myself even when I was like 🫣 😆 and the floor looks great btw 👍🏻 Surely if the temperatures in the studio are kept quite consistent the boards won’t warp to the extent people are suggesting and more bracing or legs could always be added later on.

I hate to be that guy but a speed square costs less than $10 and that is what you need for the corners of the tables. Then measure diagonally across corners and the two diagonals should be the same measurement. Just measuring cuts is not good enough especially since you have warped wood. Never buy wood from the big box stores. I get mine directly from the local wood distributor like the box stores do. Saves me $. Better quality products because they store the wood inside climate controlled. Some of these are just simple mistakes because you don't have experience. Do NOT shift the tops to compensate. You NEED to have a good box frame first to build off of. I know that these comments seem negative and they are not supposed to come off that way but ignoring seasoned professionals who have decades of experience is never the correct reaction when you don't like what they are telling you. You don't work in construction. We're trying to help. Let us pass on some knowledge and know how. Especially if it is free. I know because I was hard headed in the beginning too. But the old timers were looking out for me long term and I wish I could go back and do it right from the beginning. Old body now with lots of miles but I could have saved myself some physical wear if I was more open when I was younger. You're still young and I think that you just need to be more receptive to input and leave the ego aside on subjects you aren't a pro at. Love your channel been watching since 30k subscribers.

Measuring diagonally across the whole thing is a good idea to see where it's off. But I don't get how he's supposed to adjust it now that all the frames are screwed together. Maybe if there weren't so many inner sections of the frame, but with all of the sections, that frame doesn't look like the easiest thing to adjust. Not at this point. I'm genuinely curious how he could go about doing it as you describe at this point?

Great work with the tables! Over such a large area I think its to be expected that the frame is sitting out of square slightly, but you could probably put it right by measuring diaganolly across the tables and pulling it back into square. But truthfully, as long as the tops are square to each other and the baseplates fit okay you could get away with leaving it as is and it not being a problem. Once again, great work with the tables!

Assuming you cut all the wood to the right size, the only reason the edge overhangs are off is because the rectangle/square framing is shift slightly so the corners are not exactly 90 degree right angles. In other words they are more like a very very slight rhombus. So in your case the 8 7/8" sides are perpendicular giving you the same dimensions but the 1ft side is going to be off the more to travel from left to right. Shifting the framing from the corner nearest to the mechanical room back a little bit with fix your issue.

Hi Jordan - really cool to see you living the dream! +1 of 1 million to point out measure the opposite diagonals of each table frame across the top to get them equal. Once you screw on a table top, this will prevent that "racking" in the future. I do the same thing when I nail/screw on the back of an Ikea bookcase for example. Also, a lot of people just rent a laser level - not practical to buy infrequently used tools. Find the highest spot of the tables, and raise everything else up to that point. Btw - probably too late, and you probably don't want to obstruct the views, but have you considered somehow leveraging the considerable vertical space in the studio? I guess there's not too much call to hang planes and what not from the ceiling, but it may be food for thought. Before the tables are done, maybe hang some "invisible as possible" metal grid or grids from the ceiling so that later you can hang planes, etc.. Grid hung with metal wires such that it won't be too close to the radiant heat. Cheers!

I would say it’s so worth investing in a laser level (the one that shoots vertical, straight and either left/right) because it can check square and check how level the entire table is and check check if your sides are in a perfect line from front to back/etc, you can use it for tons of stuff anyway (hanging pictures, aligning stuff in the house, checking level on virtually anything, etc.). But that would show you in no time flat exactly which table sections are off square and help you fix all of it super quick. Heck if you need to, just return it after you get done fixing everything but i have used mine more times than i can count now when originally i just bought it for one specific task. Looks great anyway and i know that’s a huge task getting all of those measurements and everything squared up!

It's pretty square. Maybe with a big table saw for the tops and a jointer for the frame it would be more accurate, but there would still be a possibility for small inconsistencies. With that many giant tables, it would be pretty difficult to get each section perfectly the same. Most tables at this scale aren't positioned right next to each other so you wouldn't typically have something to compare it next to. I feel like it looks great and once the baseplates and city are on top of it, no one will notice.

Your almost there!!! Did you check the length of your diagonals on the frame? They need to be the same to be square. I think it's too late to change it since your tops are there but you can split the difference on all sides. Make sure to measure the diagonals on your table tops. Buy string in a hardware store, the one the carpenters use to align trusses, walls and concrete forms and not the chalk line. You can compare the difference on each diagonals and adjust. After that you can use it to make sure that all your sides are strait.

Jordan, to get the table square you will need a long tape like a fibre glass surveyors tape (they're pretty cheap) and like others have said check the diagonal measurement from corner to corner. The longer length will want to be shortened by half of the difference to the shorter length. You might find if you push it you can square it up but it might just spring back. If it does you can do this on a big span with some rope tied to the legs at the top under the frame on the long corners and a ratchet strap in the middle to crank it to the right length. If a leg is in the way you can just weave around them, it shouldn't make too much difference.

I would highly suggest using a laser, especially with something like Lego that has really tight tolerances. Set up the laser just above the table and get a scrap piece of wood. Make a line on the scrap piece and place it above a leg and adjust it. Once you did all legs your table is level. You don’t need anything fancy, you can get them for like 20-30 bucks (and believe me once you have it and know how to use it you will use it for everything

This isn't a dig at you but this is because you're cutting and putting frames and tables together. 1mm off one board then 2mm off the next 1mm of the next and all of sudden by the other side you're 20mm out and even worst if it's not a full mm but say bang on measurement one side and 2mm of the other side, not only throwing the offset of but creating a variable offset. (which will be variable anyway as your wood isn't dead straight like your melamine tops. Honestly the best, easiest and most efficient way to find out what is going on in my opinion, would be to take the tops off, lay them on the floor, touching one another. Check if that is sqaure (corner to corner measurements,) once you make that square, either by creating gaps, luckily you're baseplates will hide imperfections or recutting (I'm so certain it'll be out unfortunely, there's too many cuts for people who don't do it for a living for it not be out in some places.) Once you established the table top is square and your baseboards line up flush like you wish, then mark a offset line, place frames on top and you'll soon find the issues with the frame.

Setup looks really good so far. However it won’t stay that way for long. Those Melamine particle board panels are not stable and will warp over time. Since you didn’t make the frames to support the panels all the way to the edge, your panels will begin to droop, even before touching out the weight of the city on them. As a woodworker and cabinet maker, I would suggest adding additional framing to the existing frame to extend it out to the edge of the panels. Did you square up the frame? You should remove all of the melamine panels and then measure from one corner to the opposite corner at the other end. Then do the same thing to the other two corners. Then compare the measurements. Then push one end of the frame until both measurements are the same. Then your entire frame will be square.

Factories produce goods with a margin. Even plates that you expect to be square, they are with margin! It may be that your sheet material has a slight deviation and if you place several slight deviations next to each other or add them up, the margin of error becomes increasingly larger. All you can do is space each plate at the correct distance, but I assure you that you will definitely get gaps between the plates if you do that. AND on the other hand, you will get deviations the more plates you place against each other with a margin. I wouldn't be surprised if you just get a significant deviation on the complete other side. It can only be prevented if you literally square every plate yourself, and then you will STILL have imperfections. It is in the tenth of a millimeter, which creates accumulated margins of error. You can't do anything about that. Make sure the outer edges are the way you want and the 'errors' are on the inside. Just fill it up.

My guess is that there are micro inaccuracies in the measurements, small gaps between the sheets and unevenness on the floor that when they are combined together is making it off. If you have enough base plates, lay them down and see if there are gaps and wonkiness there. If there isn't then you don't have to do anything, but I'm uncertain that you'll be able to make it perfect.

Very easy to use the laser set it up in the corner of your building about 50mm above your framework then go around with the tape measure measuring upwards from the framework to the laser setting it to a measurement

Call it close enough and bring on the Lego! We know from your last city you know how to deal with minor table imperfections. It’s near impossible to get a table this large perfect.

You did great. Don't worry about the frames and tops not lining up completely perfect. A 1"-2" discrepancy over a length of 35+ feet is nothing. As you said the main thing is the baseplates. I think you did a great job and considering you were not working with perfectly level wood, a small inconsistency is actually expected. If after building them and the legs are still bothering you, a simple coat of white paint would make all the legs look uniformed and you would hardly notice the difference in sizes. Small investment for big results... Great job and looking forward to seeing the next few years of building a city. You are building the foundation for a lot of great content. Good luck!

Get the laser level! They’re pretty cheap and if you set it up for the correct height and extend to infinity (and beyond 😂). You can shim the table legs where needed. We got one when hanging a lot of shelves for my son’s Lego collection and city layout.

Not sure if it’s possible but have you thought about make a hinge door on you under table entrances. You could possibly glue some base plates and maybe just some Lego plants to look like a garden, that way you fill all those holes. Either way great job 👏🏽

Considering the size of the table assembly, you did very well to have only one misalignment, and it's really not a big deal, especially considering the total size of the tables. I'm just wondering how you're going to vacuum all that sawdust up that I see around those table legs before the table tops start going on. 🙂 I like the plan to have the mountains in the middle. It means the landscaping will hide its own internal structure, as well as having the more dynamic, relatively flat actual city areas closer to the edges of the tables for easier access. And yes, the full surface is *immense...* and it will be interesting to see how small your existing LEGO City will look on the table surface. 😁 Considering that you'll be adding the ski hill and other builds that were previously on the lower shelves in the old LEGO room, I'm sure it won't look tiny by any means, but you'll definitely have lots of room for growth.

Jordan the tables are amazing. I think the frame is racked out of square. The side of the frame near the staircase is 1 inch further from the rear wall than the side by the furnace closet. I'm not sure how you can square it up though.
