An enigmatic, intensive chamber drama shot in dazzling 70mm, Paul Thomas Anderson's follow-up to his game-changing There Will Be Blood mixes a film à clef about Scientology founder L. Ron Hubbard with Anderson's characteristically complex, borderline inscrutable form of character study. Joaquin Phoenix plays Freddie Quell, a troubled WWII vet with a talent for making moonshine, a penchant for getting into fistfights, and a chronically unsated appetite for sex. Crashing on a well-appointed yacht after a drunken escapade, Freddie meets Lancaster Dodd (Philip Seymour Hoffman), the leader of a new spiritual/self-help movement called "The Cause." Taking a shine to both Freddie's high-octane hooch and his psychological peculiarities, Dodd brings the "aberrated" veteran into the movement's inner circle - but Dodd's iron-willed wife (Amy Adams) and other high-ranking members of The Cause soon grow fearful of the new recruit's volatility. Moving beyond a relatively easy indictment of a manmade religion, Anderson's most mysterious film invites us to ponder whether we can ever really be our own master.
Adam Nayman is an author, critic, and lecturer based in Toronto. He writes about film for Cinema Scope and The Ringer, reviews books for Quill and Quire, and was a staff writer for season one of The Vice Guide to Film. He regularly teaches undergraduate courses at the University of Toronto and Ryerson and has written two books: It Doesn't Suck: Showgirls and Confusion and Carnage: Ben Wheatley.

The Master is PTA's masterpiece from me, and Joaquin's best performance to date.

For every PTA movie, there is someone saying it's his masterpiece. And I kinda have to agree with them 😄

As good as joker was, i feel like Phoenix winning the oscar for that was just a popularity contest. He shoudv won it for this role.

I watched the Joker film first. There is so much carry-over from this film to that one in terms of physicality. Joaquin really accentuates his angularness to represent social and psychological discord/ostracization in both movies. It seems like this film has quite a bit more depth to it, and it makes The Joker feel like a caricature of Freddie. And that's incredible because The Joker is a pretty good movie.

Wow, the commentary on this is so incredibly well observed. I have a masters in screenwriting and have watched this film multiple times (it being one of my favourite films for many years)- even so there were points made that had never occurred to me previously. Very insightful, really interesting, great job!

The backdrop of the film is a fictional portrayal of L Ron Hubbard and Dianetics. Dianetics concerns itself with the practitioner's ability to free oneself from their emotional reactive mind (think Stoicism and Buddhism). As Lancaster Dodd (Hubbard) is developing this paradigm he invites Freddie into his life. Ironically Freddie runs purely on emotions. He is lecherous, a drunk and has has a temper. As their relationship develop not only does Lancaster have difficulty in adhering to Dianetic principles Freddie becomes an extension of them. When Lancaster gets angry at the reporter, Freddie beats him up. When Lancaster is arrested by the police, Freddie fights with them. As Lancaster's value system evolves he finally realizes his relationship with Freddie is in total contradiction to it and sends him packing. Beautiful film.

He is discharged not from the Army but from the Navy. That's a pretty big mistake considering how important that is to the rest of the plot and themes of the movie.
