When I first setup this 120 Gallon tank, I added some beautiful dark pebbles. After a while I realized it was a huge mistake, and in this video I show you how I fixed it.

Thank you for uploading. Glad I watched this before making the same mistake. I wanted to mix some small river rock pebbles to my play sand substrate. Won't be doing that now. 🖒

Your welcome! If you decide that you just cant live without the pebbles you can always add them, but I have seen a major improvement in my water chemistry and clarity since going 100% sand.

Aquatic Logic I wanted to mix in pebbles because my cichlids love making piles of sand, so I though maybe pebbles would discourage them a bit. I think I rather look at piles of sand than to have to constantly vacuum the substrate.

Where is Tenerefe? I have seen sand this black in El Salvador on a few beaches. Its so hot you cant even walk on it!

the problem with river sand is sometimes it has mica(big,no,no) but if you can get into the river with a mask you can see the flow of the water and how it got there and if any mica(but cold in scotland

Sand is just much more suitable for the majority of applications. I do however enjoy a mixture of different sized sand/rock substrate. I think the mistake wasn't necessarily the dark pebbles but the size of them. I have had to remove bigger pebbles before in my planted tank and it was a pain in the ass. It is dirted too so removing all of the deeply rooted plants, sand, pebbles, dirt, etc everything would have been a nightmare. Instead I took a small hand held kid's sand sifter and meticulously removed the unwanted pebbles with everything inside of the aquarium.

Lol if my tank was dirted I would have had to have a case of beer on hand. Pull up one plant and say "Oh the humanity".

I always want a substrate that's best for plants, which in turn is best for my fish.

Thats a good point, if you have have that mutualistic symbiosis its great, but Rift Lake cichlids dont take kindly to planted aquariums.

Well I have axolotls so I keep a very fine sand in my tank :D However I'm getting a betta tank soon, I was planning of doing a mixture of stones and sand, but I might not now after seeing your vid 🤔
@AquaticLogic7 жыл бұрын
Bree if you want to take a step to improve your water quality I would do only sand. All the poop will sit on top, and its so much easier to keep clean. I got a betta as a gift, and thats what started my aquarium insanity ;-)

Aquatic Logic okay thank you for the reply!!! I'm more of a reptile/amphibian fanatic myself, but you never know ;)

I just changed a few of my smaller tanks to sand from gravel and I am liking it so far. That black sand looks really good with those yellow labs btw. My wife has a rainbow community tank and yours were beautiful, did you get rid of them during this change?
@AquaticLogic7 жыл бұрын
Yeah I sold them and filled the tank with (not yellow labs). That video comes out on Saturday morning so look for it then ;-)

What kind of sand is this this is a nice set up I have a 36 gallon with pea gravel. I also have a 60 gallon that is waiting to get set up I need to find a sand that is affordable preferably black do you have any recommendations?
@AquaticLogic7 жыл бұрын
Check out my channel, I have a video or two on the sand I use, and why I use it.

Where do you get your sand? And would it be beneficial for a live planted tank??? I got this annoyingly thick layer of rock over substrate and it just takes away so much room for my fish! Its a small tank with extremely small fish but the more room the better yknow?

The secret of my sand is hidden inside my channel. I have done a couple of videos on it ;-)

i dont get it, why the waste built up if you mix gravel and sand? i prefer barebottom, it's easier to clean and always got nitrate level below 10 ppm
@AquaticLogic7 жыл бұрын
The gaps between the pebbles provided large areas for the accumulation of solid wastes. The sand essentially (with respect to fish solid waste) has no gaps, and the wastes sit on the surface. By removing the pebbles I also remove the waste reservoir, and make vacuuming a lot easier and more efficient. That allows me to reduce Nitrates. HTH.

play sand and pool filter sand runs 5$ for a bag of 50 lbs cant beat it be sure to wash hardcore though
@michaellou71016 жыл бұрын
why bother, dude. just dump all that into a garden and get new sand and start over. you have mature filters so its fine. too much work to be worth the saving. Bite the bullet and get new sand.
