I've gone and bought another bike! This time it's that old favourite - a Honda C90.
I've wanted one of these to fill a gap in my collection for a while & now I've found one. Let the adventures begin!

Hire one when on holiday in Malta back in the 80s. Shop we hired it from forgot to tell us about the gears, we thought it was an automatic until one of us had to get off and bush the other up a hill Lots of fun, would have one now.

We have cg-125s here instead of cubs or super cubs. They're literally everywhere. Older original hondas and later indian copies. And they're the first and only thing that I tell anyone who wants to start driving to be aware of the most, running red lights, coming wrong direction into traffic at night with no lights, speeding in sidewalks, etc.

My mate used to bomb round on one of those back in the mid 80s. Used to be so badly abused it was unreal. but kept on going. They still 3 speed.? And are they still called "chicken chaser's" 😆 🤣 😂

Had one of these in my 'yoof'. End up using it as a pit bike. Scraped the leg shields along the bottom edges. Used the 'funny gear change' to do wheelies. And eventually broke the monocoque frame in half after one too many heavy jump landings! 😮 It was never in great condition, but wish I still had it.

Brilliant. I was 16 in 85 and remember these very well. My old man had one for a while when he was working at, you’ve guessed it, the local factory. Can’t say I ever wanted one. We hopped on the fizzy and then onto 125 dirt bikes as soon as we were able. Remarkable mpg though. I often wonder if folk were more oriented to using vehicles like this how much fuel we could have saved over the last 30 years. Nowadays, everyone in the house has a car and they all use them in isolation to drive 500 yards to buy some polos. Rant over. Great video. Back to the IAM research 😁

Love my C90. Perfect for the Irish back roads. Ive also a 1250 GS but enjoy them both equally. When you stop at a junction in 3rd pushing forward on gear lever again will put bike straight into neutral and then pop it into first. Saves going back down the gears. Fantastic channel by the way Reg.

You chuckled all the way through that and so did I😂 I'm not a bike rider but like classic cars and have a 1955 Standard 10 and I laugh a lot when I'm driving that along with concentration overload when you get above 50mph!! I think it makes you a better driver because you need to plan ahead as the last thing you want is to loose momentum!!

Your AJS tribute struck a chord with me Reg as I also lost my Dad fairly recently and have bought a Tiger 900 in his memory as he used to ride a Triumph in his youth. I've been without a bike for a few years and have started ROSPA training, your videos have been invaluable. Please keep them coming.

My first and only motorbike experiences were on one of these - or at least the Yamaha equivalent which was called a town mate and had a shaft drive. My mate's grand dad had one and had passed away so we set about trying to ride it, my first attempt ended with it wheelieing out from under me as struggled with the gear change and I chased it down the road upright and still wheelieing! First thing we did was to remove the naff plastic foot guard "for weight saving innit", I also remember how the front suspension was wierd in that it had a linkage which cause the front end to rise slightly when braking. My mate later got a Kawasaki KZR which was a much more modern take on these, 110cc, disc brakes and telescopic shocks up front, it was actually as fast as an average car up to about 40mph.

Beautiful countryside, and sounds like you had a fun ride. Like you say, they just put a smile on your face, although I have the new C125 not the older one. But it puts a smile on my face and it seems to evoke the same reaction from other people too. I get a great smile when I fill the tank and pay with coins from my jeans fob pocket! I'll be watching your videos with interest 👍🇦🇺

I was a bit worried at first I thought maybe you’ve been wearing your helmet too tight. But after an hour you convinced me it is a lot of fun. I could not part with 2000 quid but like you for the right price I could be converted. Although I did notice in that video you forgot to deliver the pizza

When down shifting try to raise your rpm's a little and release foot shift lever slowly. There is no centrifugal clutch. There is a clutch that is actuated automatically through a pin system, connected to the shift foot pedal, and there isan adjustment screw for the transmission case cover, on the case. It looks Ata glance like a set screw, however it is a adjustment point The shaft the clutches run through is on a booshing over shaft, and not a solid shaft like a traditional motorcycle going to the crank, hence this gives the ability for idle and 1st gear and not stalling and not going forward. It irritates the h*** out of me when people keep saying centrifical clutch. When it's not technically that.
@jonathanmellish4439
@jonathanmellish4439 Жыл бұрын
@@heritagehillsecurity8778 thank you for the tip. I have watched videos and read the manual regarding the clutch adjustment to ensure it’s correct. I read somewhere about blipping the throttle to raise the revs and I have clearly got it wrong so I will keep trying.
@heritagehillsecurity8778
@heritagehillsecurity8778 Жыл бұрын
@@jonathanmellish4439 Most new modern motorcycles do not require the skill you are currently learning, because they have a slipper clutch, which is much more forgiving to the novice. The low end of 2nd gear is the high end of 1st rpm wise. You will have this master in short order. Particularly if you can go to a safe location to practice accelerating and decelerating. Somewhere safe try giving it about 30% throttle on the down shift. Another way to think of it is rev sinking the gear to speed ratio.. Wishing you the best. Be safe and have a great time.

Not very good riding Reg. At one stage (almost half-way through the video) you turned right at a stop sign and left your right turn indicator on for miles. A sure way to meet a bad end. For a guy who rides a 1250 cc BMW and big Honda, you should know better.

Great to see you having fun. Well you have the solution to spiralling fuel costs. If my brain has it the right way round: If you are always going to use super which burns slower (?) then you can advance the ignition a touch. From KZfaq the ignition setting appears to be with covers off so I'm thinking you can't do it with the engine running. I'm assuming you have the points ignition and not electronic. Enjoy! m.kzfaq.info/get/bejne/j96orNCiq7XIf3U.html Also (I see the C90 distributer is not like a car so don't think you can adjust while running as in bits of this car write up. . .) classicmechanic.blogspot.com/2011/05/ignition-timing-with-modern-fuels.html?m=1 A good initial way to do it is to set the timing for the smoothest idle. Then see if it pinks anywhere as you accelerate through the rev range. Keep quiet on all this of course, then you will be ahead on the run in Wales . If it doesn't work then just keep quiet anyway (Now delete this comment)
