Oh boy, another Grand Prix cheater caught on camera at GP Prague. It wouldn't be Magic the Gathering without "pros" cheating. By the way, "caught" might not be the right term when nothing has happened yet but I suspect there will be an investigation.

2:04 he puts it down and riffles the bottom card out of line with the others to create space between the bottom card and second to last card. It's a move magicians use for card tricks. And I think he touches the land card to try to keep peoples eyes moving back and forth between seperate points so they aren't focused on one point and won't notice something moving in their peripherals.

That “weird” thing he did when putting the deck down was moving the bottom card out of alighnment with the rest of his graveyard to prime it for being dropped, that way his fingers wouldn’t properly hold the bottom card. Then as he was placing his graveyard back he pressed down on the card to create a vacuum so the bottom card would stick, then fall free after a short delay.

Touching the lands to adjust them before he take the graveyard again is to normalize the next adjust with the new card. Do something normal first, then when he do the trick adjust the lands gesture is something usual in the mind of the opponent. So if he don't play attention carefully and don't see the card dropping, it's something strange but the second gesture (adjust again) looks more usual and support the hidden thing. It's a magician trick.

How can you tell if someone comes in premeditive to cheat?
@WoWisdeadtome
@WoWisdeadtome 5 жыл бұрын
That was probably poorly worded, but basically analyze the context and motive. How much does the cheat improve the player's position? Aside from false shuffling to take advantage of an opponent that doesn't cut your deck all cheats are only useful contextually. So they're pretty much always going to be crimes of opportunity, not premeditated. Since this player conceded right after this clip it seems more likely this was a legitimate accident, why cheat and then quit? I mean I've seen someone who had a removal spell played on their Young Pyromancer scoop it back to their hand from the graveyard when he thought no one was looking, that is clearly deliberate. This one, not so much, there was no payoff.

Is there ever a bad time to have one more mana available? It's probably not relevant, but it could be, the actual contents of his hand notwithstanding. I've read here as well that he conceded the match pretty much straight away after this, which to my thinking is a really big deal. Why cheat and then immediately give up? I'm inclined to think benefit of the doubt here, apply more scrutiny to his future matches for a little while but otherwise I'm not convinced in this case. There are much more blatant incidents with much higher payoffs for the cheater, this one just doesn't make sense...there's no motive for it.

Professional practitioners of sleight of hand would likely be able to pull the dropping it off onto the land line easily. I wouldn't say quite feasible in pro-level magic, but it'd take massive practice to be able to do a cheat like this in an actually concealable manner on camera. I don't think it was an accident for this reason; the most likely scenario in this situation to me is he overestimated his sleight of hand skill.

More evidence of cheating can be gained by looking to see WHY he’s “intentionally” getting that land. Is he a mana short to cast a big spell, or even double spell? If he did it just to do it then it’s harder to see the extra premeditation behind it. Though the land adjusting and double graveyard grabbing and graveyard finicking looks conclusive enough here. There’s a fair amount of setup here just to drop this land onto the others.

MTG: arena is a pretty good platform at this point, why not just transition major tournaments to that platform? It prevents cheating, and makes it an easier to follow experience for spectators.

Im all out for digital tournaments. Hell, you'd be able to play the earlier brackets (or even the entire thing) without having to move out of your room. The one problem with online play is that if a bug occurs and you cant make a play or resume the game (like game crashes or a card gets 'stuck' in the air), the entire match is screwed over as you cant go back to the same board state, you have to re-play the entire thing. And you never know if a player would do something like an 'accidental d/c' to have the match replayed. And what if someone actually has a connection hiccup and d/c unintentionally and loses a match for it (imagining that a d/c = FF)? Hard to manage those situations.
