I know so many of you are with me thinking of Duckie from the movie "PRETTY IN PINK" lip syncing this song. I really want them to react to this movie. Jay, don't judge the movie based on its name. It's soo good and deep in ways. Starring Molly Ringwald, Jon Cryer (Charlie Sheen's brother in the show 2 and a half men) and Andrew McCarthy. ❤️

I can honestly say that Otis Redding is one of only a select few artists that I love everything they did. Honestly, I’ve never heard a bad Otis song and he was the first singer that I absolutely could not get enough of. Sam Cooke is amazing as well and I always turn it up when they come on! Percy Sledge gets an honorable mention here too, but Otis’s voice makes clothes fall off!! You could go on and on about how great R & B or soul is today, and it would fall on my deaf ears. Otis IS soul music… there will never be another like him.

There will never be another Otis Redding… simply food for your soul. Lots of great artists of classic soul. Percy Sledge Jay!!! When a Man Loves a Woman. Otis is just on a different level, never to be touched. Sam Cooke is close. Always wondered what music would’ve developed if he and Sam had lived to an older age. Tragic.

This is what I heard when I was a kid... The organ music you hear in so many '60s and '70s songs was one of the protests used by the hippies (young people) against the Establishment (old folks who were sending young men to war). I had been told that up until that time there was no organ music in modern music (hippies) it was only for church music (Establishment). I have always believed that was true, I still believe it.

The old versions are OK, but those old recordings are so dull compared to Otis Redding's arrangement. He breathed fresh life into an old stale song. And every version since Otis has him to thank. I particularly like the version by the Commitments, which is mostly a straight rip-off of Otis's version, but they do include some girl backup singers, which is a great addition.

One of the great soul singers. Janis Joplin loved his performance and style and was influenced by him. They crossed paths at the Monterey Pop festival in 1967. His performance there is worth watching. Interesting that Sitting by the Dock of the Bay became a hit after his tragic death in plane crash.
@caretaker158
@caretaker158 Жыл бұрын
Oh yeah, you can definitely hear Otis' influence when listening to Janis. I wonder one thing though.... "Sittin' on the Dock of the Bay" was actually unfinished. The whistling was used by Otis because he hadn't written the last verse. If he hadn't died.... would he have left it alone or would there be another verse? I personally love the way it turned out but if he'd finished it, we'd never have known about the whistling part. Sorry to ramble, been a long day and I'm tired lol
@jayestahnke9917
@jayestahnke9917 Жыл бұрын
@ Jennifer Bunn. Otis considered the song "unfinished" because he hadn't recorded a version he wanted to release. The majority of the lyrics were written by Steve Cropper based on suggestions from Otis. Steve was never going to write another verse. The whistling was just something spontaneous that Otis dropped in.

If you want to see a great performance of "Try a little Tenderness" Watch Otis do the "Live from London" version, on video. Its amazing. You guys are hitting my 60's vibes. Otis died when I was about 6 and I bawled my eyes out. That man was so good and so beloved. For me, living with teenage siblings, I was exposed to music since birth. The first record I asked for ,at 5, was The Box Tops "The Letter". My cat is named Alex after Alex Chilton. Gladys Knight was my favorite female singer, then The Shangri-las and later Janice. One of the most amazing things about Otis Redding is that he was only in his 20s when he was singing this, yet his voice has the soul of a much older man and it just hits you in every song he does. Him getting to the part you loved toward the end...if a person doesn't love that, you need to check your pulse. I highly recommend "These Arms of Mine," "Mr. Pitiful" and "Can't Turn You Loose." But as many have said, you can't go wrong with anything by Otis Redding who was taken from us far too young.

Recorded in 1966, this became Otis's signature song and was his biggest seller. Redding didn't want to record this as his idol Sam Cook had done a version in 1964 and he felt it would be disrespectful. After pressure from Stax records executive, he recorded it, with the pleading vocals he assumed wouldn't be released. He was backed by Booker T and the MGs on this tune and it became a massive hit. 🎶🎶🎶 This song has been covered by Frank, Mel snd Bing. Also more recent 3 Dog Night. Great reaction. After reacting to this you really must watch and react to the movie "The Commitments " it is full of great music and great voices. Particularly that of 16 year old Andrew Strong. You will be stunned at the sounds coming from that boy's mouth. That boy has soul. It's also a very funny movie. By the way, if Otis were alive and in his prime today, JayZ and Kanye wouldn't even be on the same plane of existence.

This is actually your four Otis reaction. You've done "Sittin' On the Dock of the Bay", "I've Been Loving You Too Long", and "Merry Christmas Baby". Bit of Otis Trivia.... Everyone knows Aretha Franklin for "Respect", which became one of her signature songs. But that song was written and originally recorded by Otis Redding. (Of course, Aretha had to flip a few pronouns around to make it work for her.) Oh, and you also might remember that one line of this song was sung by Donkey in Shrek.

I love the way this song builds. He starts with just a soft ensemble, practically acapella, then the drums start that tick tick tick to get things moving, then the organ kicks in hard, and finally the drums take over again with the march to the end. On the Live In Europe album, the MC comes in at the fade with "Got to hear some more of Otis." Yes you do.

A great cover to this song was done for a 1991 small, indie movie called "The Commitments". It's about a group of young people in Ireland's urban ghetto trying to chase a dream of a record deal by singing "Dublin soul". The acting is top notch and the songs are fantastic.

She went to the Apollo Theater to hear him sing when she was living in New York. She said she was working as a licensed cosmetology st and the windows to the building she worked in were oprn. She heard Otis Redding's song Pain in My Heart playing across the street from the record shop. She stopped work and ran over right away to buy the record. I grew up listening to him and love his music. Try listening to Pain in My Heart, Tramp, I've Got Dreams to Remember, These Arms of Mine. They're all great!
