Explanation: MOT welding a transit van! We had to repair this van last year for MOT. We expect the van to only last 6 months-a year. Tune in next week for part two!
Hi all, this is my engineering channel! I may be the youngest, most equipped (In terms of tools) engineer on KZfaq. Please remember that I do these videos for fun, not for anything in return.I love being able to share what I do with you at home that may not have access to this sort of equipment. It would be much appreciated if you would appreciate the work that goes into these videos and are all funded my me-for materials

Fantastic work mate! I'm undergoing exactly the same thing on my 03 transit now. ( as well as both sill steps, inner and outer drivers sill and passenger outer sill)! Then inner wings and finally new wings!!😫😫😫😫 I feel your pain mate!😥😥

Thanks for the support! Gonna be uploading part 2 tomorrow. The welding never ends, if I had filmed the whole repair it would be about 40 hours! Nice to see support on these videos after the ton of editing and filming!

Nice work there, I always give mine a good slashing of boiled linseed oil once I've applied underseal and also spray it inside box sections. Any surface rust gets phosphoric acid before the oil goes on, it stops the rust dead!

+GerbilFrenzy Thanks, yeah this van only has another year really so we didn't think it was worth it.

how do you spray it thourghly inside bo sections? i have only a few 1 inch holes and 15 foot box steel
@harleydavidson801
@harleydavidson801 5 жыл бұрын
@@Elldeeve I use a length of tube which fits the end of my spray gun and feed it through the holes, with the linseed oil thinned with white spirit it gets everywhere inside the chassis and usually over me a bit.....

Transit and welding are synonymous lol. I've got similar repairs to you however your inner arches look better than mine. I did actually treat myself and go out and spend £20 on some pattern inner arches though! Nice welds.

I did a city a guilds on welding a few years ago but they didn't do this sort of stuff. And yet this is exactly what I wanted to do. Oh well, shit happens.

Are you welding over the holes rather then cutting out to shape? I'm not criticising I. Curious because I may have to do some welding soon on mine.
@EngineeringinGearWelding
@EngineeringinGearWelding 5 жыл бұрын
Mixture of both really-cutting the rust out then cutting a rough panel to weld in then shape once tacked

Looks like what I’m up against. What thickness plate are you using? And where abouts are you based if I get stuck lol?

How far gone would you was too far gone for corrosion on a vehicle?
@EngineeringinGearWelding

It is hard to say as you can imagine the money to pay someone to fix it but if you are willing to give up your time to fix it, I would avoid going over half of the vehicles worth eg severe structural damage which puts you, the driver at risk is not worth fixing. Hope this helps!

So in the UK if you buy a Mk6 Transit allow extra few hundred pounds to buy a welder, some sheet metal and maybe some night school to learn how to weld etc, ha ha lol.

Not too mention countless hours of your own time of course. I live in New Zealand, i have not any Transits with rust like this, maybe it is the salt on the roads in the UK? The Mk7 Transits with 6spd gearbox break our local Ford dealer keeps a rebuilt gearbox handy for the next camper van, ha ha.

Yeah. Loads of rain combined with road salt. Haha, can never win

Van was scrapped a year after. No point in making it a bulletproof tank. The repair long out lasted the van
