Kraftur is the second by Soundtheory and it is a multiband saturation plugin - but does it offer anything new?

''Kraftur has been carefully engineered to enrich your mix, allowing you to increase power while preserving the original integrity of its dynamics. Using new, proprietary DSP methods, Kraftur relies on innovative algorithms to avoid artifacts that come with more traditional approaches to soft clipping. Kraftur can also add clarity, punch or pleasant warmth to almost any audio material.''

I think it's very good as well - I'm shocked that it already has so much use for me and wasn't $200. I tried it on piano, guitar, synth lead, full mix. It shined on everything I did.

Ultimately it`s all about the sound. This sounds good. I have plenty of valve gear for saturation, and plenty of plugins, but this still interests me.

I always wondered if Soundtheory was going to release another plugin or not. I'm happy to see that they have. Intro price of $70 is tempting me to make the purchase this week.

It looks great and the approach in the user interface is interesting, but I'm not sure if I can't achieve all that with saturn 2 which has a more open approach.

Thanks for the demo, Marlon. It looks and sounds good, I'm going to hold off as I'm still enjoying my Schwabe Gold and Orange Clip plugins with Softube or SSL X-Saturation, Vintage Drive for saturation.

I have a MacBook i9 8 cores and if you want to use those plugins you need a very strong hardware. If you use some others plugins which have a lot of cpu usage then you hit the limit very fast! I like those plugins but the cpu usage is crazy... you can bounce every track but you really need to manage your cpu usage! ;) that's the only disadvantage! :) Maybe I should upgrade to an MacMini M2. Don't know if this helps....

Oh I absolutely love this. Glad to see you doing a video on it. It's basically on all my drum tracks now. I just wish Andreas would add a GR meter to it. Well, that's my personal wishlist. Though, even in it absence, Kraftur works great and the ability to create such depth and layers to your sound is immensely helpful.

I noticed you used a high amount of Drive until 8 minutes in, whereas I immediately gravitated to just slightly more subtle use. (If I pushed Drive it was only a bit above center. ) I used the Shift controls with less Drive and found it worked better to dial something in. I'm not thinking of Kraftur as strictly a saturation plugin, although it excels at it. But it also seems to fill out the dynamics in a way different from compression and limiting - maybe I'm giving Soundtheory too much credit. I could be very, very wrong, but I'm thinking of it as going from a loudness enhancement (sort of a blend between upward compression and clipping - controlling peaks and saturating material in multiband when rising up to the vicinity of the 3 Shift values. If one uses more than a small amount of Drive, or if the shift values are aggressive it results in saturation or distortion. But I wouldn't be thinking of the very gentle work in increasing power of the signal as being only or even primarily a saturation effect, as in a plugin like Saturn. Maybe this is just semantics but I want to understand what's happening with it. "The Drive parameter should be adjusted so that some of the input signal is entering the saturation region. How much of the signal should be in this region depends on whether Kraftur is being used as a loudness enhancer or as a saturation/distortion tool." Nor do I think it's purely doing a soft clipper function. The reason I say this is because of these parts of the manual (above and below), and also from listening. The first thing I notice is that the increase in loudness density is achieved as adjustments are made - rather than noticeable saturation that starts low and grows. So, for example the Spectre plugin is very different in results. Here's what I'm looking at: "While initially designed as a mastering tool, Kraftur is equally effective in adding frequency-specific saturation to individual mix elements such as vocals and drums. Kraftur is not implemented using standard DSP methods. Instead, it relies on innovative algorithms to avoid artifacts that come with more traditional approaches to soft clipping. However, Kraftur shares the same goal: increasing the power of the signal while containing signal peaks."

could potentially achieve same ends with Saturn + a clipper. though with this built specifically for main purpose of boosting overall loudness of the mix and doing it rather well, might take alot more trial-and-error to tweak all the different options with Saturn. could test & compare. though given Soundtheory's track record and detail they've put into the algorithms with the focused intention for this, wouldn't be surprised if this still proved its value quickly. would also probably depend on the quality of the other clipper you used - something like Gold Clip coming out on top of cheaper options.

@@RokSivante I never put Saturn 2 onto master chain at least for the loudness per say. Just got handy with Standard Clip, used IK one usually. 2 in 1 sounds lLike good option.

Idk about internal oversampling, but I've tested it for aliasing and it does alias a lot. Also I did oversample it thrue a metaplugin and it did solve the problem, so i guess where is no automatic oversampling inside, since it would automaticly change when I use oversampling in metaplugin, and it didn't. So I would rather oversample it externally, or lower the HF drive, turn off the clip selling and use your own clipper at the end.
@weedwick9888
@weedwick9888 Ай бұрын
or maybe it's just a bug? did anyone test it too?
@whitenoisestudio
@whitenoisestudio Ай бұрын
I have to recall from memory since my trial has expired. I can't remember having lots of aliasing with normal amounts - and using higher sample rates did push that aliasing way above Nyquist for sure. Make sure to test with different test frequencies as well. But if you compare it with a saturation plugin that doesn't oversample at default settings you will see a big difference in aliasing amounts - I found Kraftur to be pretty aliasing-free from the get go.

I consider this a design desaster. Basically the 2/3 of the plugin to the right are mostly useless eye candy. Trying to compare the input (x-axis) to the output (y-axis) spectrum drove me crazy. The whole flickering mess discourages or even hinders just hearing what's going on with the sound. It might sound great, but this to me is a big failure.

5:46 Apparently the plugin uses minimum phase crossovers rather than linear phase to get this zero latency - as a result you're going to get phasing issues around each band
@ProudSausage
@ProudSausage Ай бұрын
The bands are fine... non-linear phase crossovers exist... but you cannot use it as a send effect or in parallel processing naively (you could make it work with a second instance of Kraftur though that's simply set 100% dry)
