Not a new episode of Show & Tell but another story from Sparks, take 2 minutes out of your day to look at this photo while Stephen reads you an accompanying story inspired by the image.
Next week's episode will be another huge exploration of some aspect of photography or another, think of this as a little spa break for your mind. Or the visual equivalent of a quick muffin. Or something.
Please subscribe to the channel and Stephen will continue doing these films as he seeks to focus on photography content and not just which new or old camera to buy.
For more of Stephen's photography please visit his website: www.stephenleslie.co.uk/ or his Instagram: / step_hen_le. . or sign up for the mailing list for his new book MOSTLY FALSE REPORTS: tinyurl.com/6uyy3vsf
Please also feel free to get in touch if you're interested in zines, prints or street photography workshops. Thanks.

Thanks very much, unfortunately you can only get it second hand now. I don’t have any left. But new one coming next year. Please sign up for the mailing list (link in the blurb) I send you another story and then just let you know when it’s happening, no spam I promise.

Hi Stephen, loved your recent presentation at the RPS Visual Arts meeting. A couple of photographers you might like to look at are Gilbert Garcin's book "Le Temoin" and Arthur Tress's bizarre slant on the world around him. Looking forward to more Show and Tell videos.

Thanks Ray, glad you enjoyed the talk. I will probe further in to those two photographers and see what I unearth. Thanks for the suggestion.

Suggestion: There is a story that could be fleshed out quite a bit. Perhaps you could do it. The essentials: The sublime Chilean photographer Sergio Larrain was in Paris, taking pictures near Notre Dame in the late 1950s. Later, he developed the film. Still later, he got around to blowing up one of the negs and saw a couple (in embrace?) that he had completely missed when taking the shot. The renowned Argentine writer Julio Cortázar (perennial contender for the Nobel Prize during his later years, but I digress) heard about this incident (directly from Larrain?) and wrote a short story "Las babas del diablo", which, in turn, became the basis for Michelangelo Michelangelo Antonioni's film Blowup (1966). So, themes of perception, the relationship of memory to film, as well as the creative meanderings and transformations of an idea or perception from act to film to photo-paper to spoken tale to printed page to motion picture.

Thank you very much for that, absolutely fascinating story that I had never heard before. I’m a huge fan of Sergio Larrain, especially the work he did in London in the 1950s which is just brilliant. Do you know where I could see the photo you’re referring to? That would be really interesting. I imagine that Blow Up has dated more than the photo!

Ahhh ... there's the rub ... . I have made some mild attempts at finding it, but no luck. The large Larrain book (2014, edited by Agnes Sire) does not show it. Will keep trying. Btw, Cortázar's story, aptly titled "Blowup" in translation, holds up much better than the movie.

OK, I made a serious attempt at finding out about the Larrain Notre Dame pictures and got an answer from his editor. She says he never talked to her about it (although she had heard of this story), and evidently he did not "keep" a lot of his images; so, she's not sure if this is a "legend". There is a short (

@@DR-- That is amazing, thank you very much again. If I ever do make a film about this I will have to credit you as a researcher. I knew about the character in Blow Up being based on Bailey but I had no idea that McCullin was involved, that's a great detail. I will ponder and think. Thanks again.

I loved your story Brillant as usuel. But I have another story about what you said in a other video. Who as invented the photography ? The English, the French and may be the German. It depends on one side of the fence you are. You know I have the French and the English culture. So who has invented the photography? That the question. But really who care? Thank you for your excellent chanel

I will look in to it. If I can find a funny story or work out how to incorporate some jokes, then yes. Stay tuned. Thanks for the suggestion.
