Father fish is using similar system, just without undergravel filter, he's using just high substrate. I prefer your way, its more advanced, and make sense. I admire both of you. One I'm gonna build aquarium and without your ideas will be impossible to do it properly

Awesome, just been researching on KZfaq and came across father fish first but , I didn't want to do the dirt. Then I found your channel and though my brain doesn't get all of it, I got the jist. I always used to use undergravel filters in my tanks, my 55 gal for twenty years. I probably did a complete water change cleaning every 4-6 months. My fish were healthy and lived over 10 yrs. In fact when we sold our home and moved, I gave 6 silver dollars that were 10 yrs old and a huge pleco about the same age to my local fish store. We moved into a small home. I went the way of sponge filters and hob. My water is clear but I've got hair algae and that blue green algae. I'm going to do my three 20 gal. Tanks and my 5 gal tank your way. Going back to what worked...but I never heard of the slow moving...so that's new for me. I'm going to do it your way because I see the results and you explain it well. I have a black convicts in each of my 20 longs, they are feisty and very interactive with us and we love them. I keep them in their own tank. They eat snails..lol. I thought they would leave em alone..nope. I also have guppies in a 20 high and I'm going to have to give some to my fish store because I've got a lot!! I want to grow some natural plants. I have duckweed and it loves the guppy tank, I have to scoop out some every couple weeks. Thanks for your videos and I will let you know how my tanks turn out!

In the past i set up tanks with an UGF and they worked great, no big problems. One thing that bothers me about using them is that i can't see root health and growth under the substrate. I know that sounds strange, but i like to check the root system of the plants. That said, i'll probably set up my next one with an UGF with a slow bubble rate. No ferts, just let the fish waste fertilize the plants.

I would not run new substrate it through the mesh, plastic container. I normally use a Shiruba filter and let it run overnight. With a lot of filter wool.

Nice tank! I have seen a lot of tanks in people's homes and the decorations are very basic and not what you would see in the wild. i still don't no 100% how the cycle of tanks works but why must you have a gap of 1 inch under the plenum?

So a plenum and bcb baskets are 2 ways to do the same thing? You don't have to do both? Can I add bcb to my hang on back filter? Or is it better under the gravel.

I recently set up a 75 gallon using special kitty litter and gravel with an under gravel filter. I did not add the air stone and thought it would be okay, but i've noticed when i use my tweezers there is air bubbles rising to the surface. Is this from sulfates from anaerobic bacteria and should i start from scratch?

How do you vacuum a substrate that deep? Or do you never vacuum?
