In today's follow-up, I answer some of the questions that were brought up with Saturday's video. On Saturday, I cut a large, close tolerance, internal keyway on the Morey Vertical Slotter. There were many great questions and comments.
I am also working as hard as I can to get videos out to you, but I am falling further behind with every day. As time allows, I will get videos done and uploaded.
Hungry Hollow Steam & Gas Engine Club annual show is June 29 & 30, 2024. I will be there with my 1933 Farmall F12 on Steel Wheels and my shop built water wagon, and I will be servicing the steam engines. If you are in the area, don't miss this show. www.hungryholl...

Josh. I come here to see how you do your work. I understand constructive criticism can be a good thing providing it is presented in the correct manner. But do try to limit your responses to the trolls that like nothing more than to provide negative feedback. Those commenters often feed on your replies and just encouraging others to join the party.... Enjoy the Hungry Hollow Steam & Gas Engine Club show this weekend :)

When I was an Engineer in the Merchant Navy, everyone, but everyone had a 10" shifter (adjustable spanner) in the rule pocket of their boiler suit, usually a Bahco, (probably why there were so many rounded nuts on ships). I have a good array of different sizes and ages of Bahco shifters in my workshop from 4" to 15", I have never needed anything larger. If a nut or bolt is a little stubborn, then I use it to measure up for the correct size combination spanner. But there is nothing wrong with using a shifter at the right time and place.

It's always good to see how others approach a specific job. I don't see the questions as being a negative as long as someone learns from it. Another part of it is that you have figured out how to do a particular job with what you have. And that's something that everyone has to understand. For example, I worked in a shop that had some broaches, but I needed to cut a keyway that I did not have broaches for, and it was going to be a one off. So, I used the cross slide on a lathe. I ground and mounted a tool in a boring bar and then locked the spindle and took a thou at a time with the part mounted in a chuck. Not recommended, but it got the job done and passed inspection. And it was a fairly small key so the load on the spindle and cross slide was not extreme.
@TopperMachineLLC
@TopperMachineLLC Ай бұрын
Believe it or not, but what you did in the lathe is now being made as standard tooling for CNC turning centers. One of my customers does this for all of their small keyways.

For these repeats jobs where you're got a good process dialed in that works for you, have you considered ever covering some of the prior techniques that either didn't work or worked less well? Thank you for the Vertical Shaper/Slotter . It's the first I've seen. Regarding adjustable wrenches.... My great grandson asked me why I own so many wrenches but also own adjustable wrenches. I told him that I will only use an adjustable wrench to lightly snug a nut or bolt. When real torque is needed I will never use one. Definition of Adjustable Wrench: A wrench capable of fitting many sizes of hardware equally poorly! You know this is true. Hell, I will only use an open end wrench where I can't use a Box Wrench. I like my hexagonal surfaces to remain that way. Wakodahatchee Chris ...Old an set in my ways.

Good that you finally tracked down the key and driver for the screws. Sometimes particular screws are hard to get keys or bits for. I struck a situation where I wanted to take something apart and it had screws with triangular slots. In my 10 or so bit sets, I did not have anything that was triangular, so I had to make a triangular driver for it.

That is one large adjustable wrench. I don't have anything that big. I thought my 18" was big. In my shop I have the following sizes: 4", 6", 200mm 10", 12", 18" and 12" offset. In my car I have a 200mm (8"). So most of my adjustable wrenches are imperial, with a couple of metric ones. However, in my wood shop, I have an adjustable wrench that is both imperial and metric. It's marked 10"-250mm. First time I've seen one that is both imperial and metric.

@@TopperMachineLLC yeah interesting. I’ve done some pretty long keyways in our EDM with success. I wonder what their doing different. We only use EDM for keyways as we don’t have a slotter and often cut keyways in hardened parts. My last job had a 16” slotter. And yes, there are jobs we we do on the EDM that would be easier and faster on a slotter. But the slotter would sit idle 99% of the time in our case.
