Diet / Eating Plant-Based - 00:27
Surgery - 13:32
Chemotherapy - 24:28
Diet / Eating Plant-Based (starts at 00:27)
* Did you ever consider your vegan diet as a possible cause? Cancer is partial to glucose.
* So the delicate question is, why are you eating a plant-based diet if you got cancer, is it related? One would assume that the most healthiest diet would be the healthiest outcome. Do you believe that the cancer is related to the diet? Or not?
* Have you considered a raw vegan diet? I’ve seen people on KZfaq talk about how it helped cure their cancer.
* What about to put your body in a state of ketosis, I'm thinking about to add another line of defense. I'm not a vegan but I had a stroke in 2020. The ketones help to recover faster and better. I know is not the same, but I know you can be a vegan eating keto diet.
* How difficult was it to eat vegan/WFPB when you’re in the hospital?
Surgery (starts at 13:32)
* Have you had a hysterectomy?
* Having been a nurse who took care of ovarian cancer patients many years ago, I was surprised when the surgeons did not perform a total hysterectomy and bilateral oophorectomy when they realized you had ovarian cancer. Is the protocol different now? I know you wanted to preserve embryos, but…
* Why have they not removed both of the your ovaries?
* Were you not able to be successfully debulked? Or did you choose not to do “full” ovarian cancer surgery that removes about everything including Omentum and reproductive organs?
* Why can you not have surgery and have tumors out as much as they can and let chemo work on a smaller area? Why wait? It could potentially spread while waiting month after month.
* Can they not just take out the bad things?
* Is there another surgery planned?
* Liver transplant… hope this isn’t a stupid question, but could this be an option at some point?
Chemo (starts at 24:28)
* Why did they choose to do chemo for you?
* I’ve had neuroendocrine cancer in the lung. The hospital told me chemo would not work. Only a 1 percent chance. Their treatment consisted of surgery only. I guess I’m wondering why they recommended chemo?
* What chemo are you taking?
* Are you in a private room or are there chemo buddies in the room just off camera?
* Have you researched the studies on fasting during chemo?
* Are you supposed to eat certain foods/not eat on chemo days?
* Have you seen the video on chemo and fasting from McGregor?
* Do you have ginger before your chemo?
* I had a friend that did chemo, but he did it at home it was portable. Why can’t you do that? Just curious.
* Are there restrictions to being intimate since starting chemo?
* Do you have a port?
* Does the chemotherapy affect your taste buds?
* How will your doctors know how you are responding to the chemotherapy?
* Have you gotten any sores in your mouth or nose?

Trust the medical people who are tasked to help you and stay smart about keeping abreast of wisdom regarding treatment. You are doing great, Jessica .... all these "cures," diet plans and substances people suggest to you have yet to be proven as effective and every one of us is different. People are always quick to rush and tell you what you MUST do and what diet you HAVE to follow with no scientific evidence. That is not helpful. A question or a suggestion is ok, but people can be very judgemental about it when you don't do what they think you should do. It's easy to fall down the rabbit hole, looking for anything that will help --- you guys have a good, clear path of treatment and a lot of knowledgeable professionals on your team. Good luck and you guys are awesome.

My doctor explained ovarian cancer as being like a dandelion that has gone to seed. It scatters throughout the entire abdomen. The cancer grows in so many areas, especially on the omentum, and so before surgery he recommended four rounds of platinum-based chemo. I had my surgery and a month later finish two more rounds. Chemo saved my life. You’ll get there ❤

I have worked in cancer diagnostics for over 40 years. When we finally land on "cure" it will have to be a very individual approach. We will have to train a persons immune system to recognize the cancer cells as a foreign entity and kill them. Recently the colonic MMR deficient tumors have gone into complete remission with PD-L1. Metastatic melanoma has had amazing results as well. You're right Brian, the day we connect the dots could come at any moment. Live healthy and positive. Love you both!

Cancer just doesn’t care who it takes. My Auntie was in her mid nineties and chained smoked since she was a teenager. You’d open her front door and the smoke used to hit you, as she never opened any windows. She was never I’ll until she died. How does that work? Two other people we knew never smoked, drank, were slim, ate well, perfect weight and exercised. Both had cancer and died very quickly. I want to thank you as since watching your channel I have gone back to being a vegetarian. My body feels so much better; and my skin looks better. I’d love to try vegan, but I’m not there yet. My best friend is in hospice care after a six year battle with ovarian cancer. She had no warning or symptoms other than feeling like she had a UTI. She learned a lot and was an advocate for herself after receiving her stage 4 diagnosis. It was so widespread in her body but she lived life to the fullest for those six years and says that although her life is coming to a close, she did not lose her battle, she lived with it and won her battle. You are doing great and are on a great track to healing. She was at MD Anderson and John’s Hopkins, and with the best doctors, she was able to enjoy so much of life when most of the doctors were not sure what she could expect. Attitude and support is everything…you have both!

I am an operating room nurse and my specialty is GYN ONC! Often times we go in to a surgery for a pelvic mass not knowing if it is cancer or not. We get a biopsy and send it off to the pathologist in the hospital for something called a frozen section where they give an initial diagnosis. Usually they are able to tell what kind of cancer and what grade it is but sometimes they arent. Frozens dont get the best slides for pathology so they will submit tissue for "permanent" section by putting the tissue in formalin. I have been in cases where we get the pelvic mass out and send it out and it comes back for a cancer under frozen section but the doc doesnt take anything else out because cancer bleeds a lot! Its mushy and just oozes out blood and sludge. Often it is too risky to go after EVERY spot they see. They often just go in for a tissue diagnosis and we call it a "peek and shriek!" because we close up and wait to take anything else to make sure the cancer responds to chemo. Then we go back and look inside the patient again to make sure we dont see any residual signs. then we take everything out.

@@shelleyanne3522 Often we can tell right away if it is cancer or not. The surgeon usually knows as soon as we get a glimpse, but some cancerous tumors look very similar others. We need to distinguish which type of cell the cancer originated from and often they can only tell under microscope.

My mother had an emergency heart incident because of artery blockage and got admitted to a specialized heart hospital. The first meal they gave her was a giant piece of sausage lasagna! We set up a meeting with the hospital dietitian and the only way they could provide healthy food was to put her on a diabetic diet. That food was better, but still not great. Having someone bring in healthy food seems to be the best option. Great work Brian! Much love and positive energy to you both❤❤

Hospital food is absolutely horrible and the opposite of what healthy food should be. It's insane, isn't it? Even the "diabetic" diet is bad and high in carbs. My husband had a mitral valve rupture and I can say that the Cardiology department at OHSU does prescribe a cardiac diet for their patients. We all have cancer cells. We all have exposure to carcinogens. The best hope is to keep the immune system as healthy as we can. The one thing we should never do is blame the patient, blame ourselves, blame anything. When one gets the diagnosis, this is now. Do what we can, learn what we can. Being positive and hopeful, while hard, is the best medicine and acting on the best information we can attain and that which our instincts say are right for us is also best. When you are dumped into the middle of a body of water, you don't spend all of your time on how and why you got there. You get your bearings, assess your options, look for land, and start swimming. You two are doing brilliantly and we are all rooting for you. XO

Hospitals are overall terrible with accommodating special diets. I have celiac disease and they fed me a gluten muffin as my first meal after open heart surgery. Talk about double the fun! I even met with a dietitian but the options are just so limited. Definitely something that has lots of room for improvement. They didn’t even have milk substitutes which is crazy to me considering how many folks have dairy allergy or lactose intolerance in addition to those who do not consume dairy for other reasons.

Black bean tostada, pasta, smashed avocado quesadilla, plus lots of great sides, fruits and veggies. Every hospital should have these options! You guys are looking good! Keep it up!!!

I so agree with you both about hospital food. I've had discussions with the hospital dietitian and the viewpoint was very much what they are taught in their degrees. That is the pyramid model which doesn't prioritise carbohydrates or whole foods. There is so much to do with nutrition in medical institutions. Am very appreciative of your approach. I don't think there's any doubt about your nutritional approach (stage 4 breast cancer survivor here). Always best wishes 🥰❤️

Wishing you the best I have stage 4 Uterine cancer, was diagnosed with Ovarian right at the start of Covid, went through first round of chemo (same as you are taking), was supposed to do 3 then scans and surgery but with Covid at it highest and only life saving surgery being performed it was put off until after the first round. It shrunk my masses a lot and when the surgery was performed it went a lot smoother and with less loss than expected (my whole abdomen was full of masses). My surgery took out all my reproductive organs (I was 62 so not a big deal.) and testing the cancer showed it to be Uterine not Ovarian, but I did not lose my bladder, kidney or any of my intestines which was expected from my first scans. After surgery even though they had gotten all the "cancer" there was still microscopic stuff there so had a round of another type of chemo - can't remember the names right now. I am currently on immunotherapy - Keytruda. I did get a port it was recommended after my first infusion even though my veins were in pretty good shape, might of been because of my age or that they knew I was in for a long haul. My tumor markers have been in the "normal" range for over a year now and the cancer has not grown enough to do any thing else with it. But I find myself asking a lot of the same questions you have voiced. Hang in there it sounds like you have a good team and lots of support. My cancer center is only 45 minutes away but it is done in a big room with 5 sections of 6 to 9 chairs and they are almost always full. We are not allowed to have anyone with us unless we need physical help so that has been frustrating. I've gone on too long. But find something everyday to smile at and enjoy. Keep positive.

You guys are so great. Been in healthcare for decades and I just get frustrated that hospitals and SCHOOLS serve such bad food. I have so many family members (related and thru marriage) that don’t get that by eating processed foods that’s why they have diabetes. And listen, they complain about the cost of food but I can live off beans, rice and nice spices for less than $20 a week. You just gotta want it. Plus you don’t have to spend half of your paycheck on medications. We love you and you are making a difference 💕

I was diagnosed with ovarian cancer 11 years ago at age 60. I’ve been a vegetarian since I was 18. Always been in good health and tested negative for the BRCA gene, and no family history. It really pissed me off! Sometimes it just happens. My Gyn-Onc said eat the pie, the sugar isn’t a factor. I had a hysterectomy and 6 rounds of chemo, paclitaxel and carboplatin. Take one day at a time. ❤

My mother had ovarian cancer twice. I can't say we've had the healthiest diet our entire lives. Our family is not overweight but we have eaten a lot of processed food in our lives. She thought the birth control her doctor put her on when she was in her 30s may have contributed but she also worked with possible radioactive materials when she was in her twenties before that was really monitored that much. Both her mother and sister had female cancers. I have not been tested for the BRCA gene, but my doctor treats me pretty much as if I have it. My doctor also says pretty much if we live long enough our bodies are probably going to end up with cancer.

My mom had ovarian cancer 42 years ago. Obviously, there wasn't treatment like there is now. But, she juiced carrots until she literally started to turn orange. When the doctors at MD Anderson in Houston had her in surgery, they were astonished to find that her body was starting to heal itself. So whatever is in carrots was very beneficial for her. All bodies are different, though.

Thank you for taking the time and having patience with these questions. I had endometrial cancer and the same kind of chemo. It worked well for me and my cancer was metastatic but seems to be in remission. I wasn't aware of toxicity for 48 hours, but I live alone and no other person to consider so topic didn't come up with the doctor. I didn't have an integrative oncologist and I was hoping for one but they are as rare as hen's teeth where I live! So I was my own integrative "doctor" with CT scans before, in the middle of and shortly after my chemo was done. My surgeon has done physicals on me and we have found no evidence of disease. No complaints except there needs to be more done on the dietary connection to cancer and other environmental toxins and exposures that can affect our health. Also more understanding about how to NOT get cancer when we have no genetic cause. Not everyone is genetically predisposed to get cancer, yet we might still get it. No one in the medical establishment seems to have a real answer for the cause and prevention. Thus all those outliers with their YT videos and what worked for them. Cancer is very common and a real threat to our health, our families, and the livelihood and wealth of the average person. This is why people with a cancer diagnosis will continue to try all kinds of things searching for the cure.

You guys have learned and are learning so much. There is a reason why doctors train for 6+ years. Google and utube can make folk think they know as much as doctors, they may of course know different. There is also great disrespect towards the medical profession. I'm WFPB. The medical profession has not been able to help my problems where diet has. But I totally respect science...they are always researching. I do not hold in contempt pharmaceutical companies or traditional medicine. There is a lot of hate, disrespect and bitterness out there. These attitudes do not help. We can humbly learn from each other. Blessings

I’ve been vegan for 30+ years and been in hospital numerous times & most have been bad up until the last 2 hospitals I was in was ok with vegan meal choices. I had the chef come and talk with me in one of them for their future menus, which they’ve now implemented as options (I’ve only done plant based nutrition & nutrition diplomas) here in Australia. But I would love it if they had a hospital here like Hayek Hospital in Beirut, Lebanon which is fully plant based! They are leading the way for treating food as also medicine 💚

It’s been 4 years and he has eaten sugar free and very healthy since, but he was always a healthy eater. His father-in-law made him ginger tea fresh during chemo for nausea, he lost 45 lbs, which made his Doctor make him eat more chicken and fish, mostly salmon.

Just because the interwebs post articles stating that sugar feeds cancer doesn’t make it right. I specifically asked this question at Mayo when I was in treatment. The answer is no. Sugar isn’t healthy in large amounts but it does not cause cancer.
@alisonlutton9378
@alisonlutton9378 Жыл бұрын
The question here is what do you mean by “sugar”? As Brian said, the body feeds from and needs glucose from complex carbohydrates (fruit, veggies, grains) that naturally contain it along with other nutrients. Ultra-processed, factory produced foods including those that contain various manufactured “sugars” (corn syrup, fructose, dextrose, fill-in-the-blank-ose) have been associated with various diseases including cancer. Just sharing what I’ve learned from doctors, reading, and consensus across major national and international cancer and nutrition organizations and journals.

What role does sugar play in cancer growth? Every cell in your body uses blood sugar (glucose) for energy. But cancer cells use about 200 times more than normal cells. Tumors that start in the thin, flat (squamous) cells in your lungs gobble up even more glucose. They need huge amounts of sugar to fuel their growth.Feb 12, 2019

It doesn't matter if healthy food is offered. People still have a choice and they choose to eat garbage. Even outside hospital, with all the control we have in our own home, how much crap do we choose to eat. I'm plant based, and 2 years out since chemo and I've been really good making good choices the last 2 years and keeping my weight under 125 lbs. But I just finished a half-gallon Moolineum Crunch ice cream last week! A reaction to a bit of anxiety and stress. We just need to find our triggers and make the right choices in those circumstances. But the bottom line is we're valuing that crap more than our health in that instance.

I understand the process. The Doctors are making the call. If they can't clear around urethra, and they determine the kinds of cancer you have, they can rework your urethra if required and remove organs. It's complicated... Recovery is long and weakens immune system before we become stronger. You are doing what you can. I hope this video helped people better understand but your focus has to be on yourself. Stay proactive, stay informed and just remember it's not a sprint, it's a journey.

I am so relieved to hear you are doing fasting around chemo... I have felt guilty about not telling you what the naturopathic oncologist told my husband... no sugar at all before or during chemo because we want the cancer cells to be looking for "food" and they will go for the sugar before the chemo if it is present. It is known that cancer cells go to sugar, hence the "sugar water" pre pet scans. It was so sad then to walk into the chemo treatments and see them offer coffee with sugar, soft drinks, sugared juices, cookies, etc....

I’m a cancer survivor. I had endometriosis cancer and had surgery in 2020. After my surgery I am required to meet with my gynecologist oncologist. Prior to each appointment I’m required to have a blood draw (a tumor marker), prior to my bi monthly appointments. Before I began eating plant based my “tumor marker” number went up 2 points each month for 4 months. After eating plant based for a few months, my “tumor marker” number began going down, and has constantly gone down each appointment. FYI- the good range for the tumor marker number is less than 35. The highest my number was, post surgery, got up to 26 (from 17). I absolutely believe eating plant based helps fight cancer. Keep up the good job. Blessings 🙏🏻

I’ve also seen how ongoing research has changed thinking about most effective treatments over time. I can see that you are providing a valuable service to people who have had experience with one person’s case, one type of cancer, or one protocol being promoted by individuals who claim it can cure cancer. You are doing a beautiful job of helping more people understand what cancer really is, that each type and each case is different, and each of us with cancer has an active role to play in partnership with our doctors as we decide what’s best for us based on our personal values, goals and situations.
