Here’s a Tip: The loophole around this law is finding or making a food plot.

my neighbor has a feeder 40 yds from our club property line..the deer live on our 200 acres.but hit his corn daily..knowing the feeder is there,,should i hunt 200 yds away and let those few acres alone?or is it legal to get 20 yds off line and hunt my unbaited property.

I’m SO glad I live in Ohio , in Ohio we can hunt deer over bait on private property , no baiting on public lands. Turkey baiting isn’t allowed , = 10 days after the bait is gone can you hunt Turkey. After hunting for 25 yrs , some people think deer come running for deer feeders , not true , deer do nearly the same thing everyday , I’ve shot 8-10 deer on bait. Baiting deer & crossbows should be LEGAL in all 50 states !

I have a more subtle question about "baiting" which for me means attracting wildlife to my hunting area. Can you legally plant vegetation and then hunt over that area? What I have in mind is growing fruit trees, nut trees, or other "permanent or semi-permanent" vegetation to attract deer and other wildlife.

The law is 60 years old...Is it not time to look at changing it? Other states allow it. If the stance from TWRA is no and TWRA agrees with the law, can they explain why? What keeps this law on the books with all the corporations investing in attractants that have bait in the ingredients. Also, I did not hear about the salt / mineral mix that is sold. Is it true or not true that as long as the "Attractant" has 51% salt or other minerals it is legal regardless of other ingredients? I have heard that before and I think in segments like this there should be complete disclosure for hunters. We don't want trouble for hunting but, we do want to take advantage of new discoveries and technologies for hunting. I think that it is evident that there is a ton of cash to be made by business and taxes (maybe TWRA should look at taxing attractants and baits for extra cash, but that would mean making them legal). The market is so great that even in states where it is illegal to hunt over bait it is still sold. Another point I would like to make is that there is legalities to "hunting" over bait but not baiting itself. Why is it OK to bait all year long until hunting season? If it is bad for the deer in December is it not still bad for the deer in July?

I don't believe in baiting period. I agree with laying down scent attractives getting the deer interested in the area and trying to keep them coming around, but during deer season you should try and use your call like in November grunt call. If you can't get it done then learn how and then go back out. Hunting over bait just isn't the right way.
