I will add one byte of knowledge into this fourm and that is Adding cells in the thickness actually increase the softness and make structure little softer then in real life and this is the reason why changing global size parameter to 0.8 increased the stress and deflection because it artificially soften the beam The solution to this is to use not more then 4 cells across the thickness On the contrary using tetrahedron across thickness makes beam stiff and thus artificially reduce the stress and deflection

@drdalyo

You could split the face geometry at the bottom to make a line, and then apply a displacement boundary condition making the vertical and lateral condition 0, and only allow for horizontal (FREE). This depends how you set up your axes.

Why does your deflection look symmetric when the support you applied have unsymmetric properties? I.E the fixed support prevents rotation. Why are you using a fixed support at all when the beam is simply supported?

bro, i applied force as you did. but , don't know why the force direction is acting along the edge. if i change direction, force just flips along the edge. how do i change the direction to become perpendicular to the face ? SO, i first applied force on face in downward direction. then, edited it and changed geometry to the edge and its direction remained the downwards.

It may be a simple question but I was wondering why did you not choose to slice the body in order to apply the load at center. I have thin stacked beam-like filaments that I would like to keep fixed from the center to avoid adding weak springs when I apply moment in the Z-axis. And I thought the easiest way for me would be to create a plane offset to the center of the stacked beams and use the slice command. I realize that this causes the bodies to be separated but if I use the Bonded condition, I hope to get a result similar to a uniform stack of beams ...is this a correct approach?

+Pavan Agarwal you can create Construction Geometry, where you can then create lines and planes, from there you can scope results based on lines or planes. If you want just a node or element, using the newer versions of ansys you can click to show mesh, and use node or element selection tools to select the node or element, then create a named selection, and then in results use the named selection as the scope. Hope this helps!

How would I apply a point load at x distance from one end for a 1D beam? I understand how to do this for 3D beams, but not 1D. I've tried adding construction points to my line sketch, however when I go to add a force, it only allows me to select to the two points at the very end of the beam, and the point I've added isn't visible. Reason why I ask for 1D, is that for my assignment, I have to analysis a simply supported beam with a UDL and two point loads by doing 1D analysis first and then 3D analysis and compare the results. Also, can you explain your choice for the supports used? I thought a simply supported beam had a pinned support on one side and then a roller support on the other, however I can't find these support options in ANSYS 17. Cheers.

Sir, can you please tell me how to analyze for cylindrical member. I'm facing problem with the edge can't get the right point
@drdalyo
@drdalyo 7 жыл бұрын
+akram shaikh good question, cylinder would not be as easy. 1) simplify the problem and use a line body with a cylinder cross section and use similar boundary condition as this video. For how to do this, check my new linear buckling tutorial. 2) add two thin flat square plates at the ends of your cylindrical beam, then apply similar constraints. This should not affect the results near the center of the beam. 3) you can use Remote Displacement constraints on the cylinder edge, say left BC, constrain in Y, X, Z and the right BC only in Y, Z. Not sure of the results but you can play around with using the cylinder edge or adding BC to specific elements or nodes near your support. You might get singularities but you can just ignore them if your focus is near the center. Hope this helps! Thanks for watching. Drdalyo

Dear Dr. DalyO I wonder if you can help to predict the collapse load in a simply supported beam and a cantilever beam by using ansys . Looking forward to hearing from you. Omar
@drdalyo
@drdalyo 8 жыл бұрын
+Galloper What do you mean the collapse load? you mean ultimate tensile strength? that would just be when the stress in the FEA reaches the limit of the material your using. So for example basic steel has a yield at 250MPa and ultimate at 500MPa, so load the model until your stress reaches this value, but if its a simple problem you could just calculate it by hand would be faster. Missing some details here, please give me more information. Thanks for watching!
@omarsameri8563
@omarsameri8563 8 жыл бұрын
DrDalyo, thank you very much for your reply, collapse load is the load at which the beam fails. in other words, below this load the still safe,at and may be after this load the beam gonna collapse. I did the analytical solution and I just wanted to verify my results. Looking forward to hearing from you
@drdalyo
@drdalyo 8 жыл бұрын
+Galloper So then it is as i stated before, depending on your materials ultimate limit, it will fail at that point. so if your UTS is 500MPa, and the stress in ANSYS reaches that value, the material will completely fail.
@NTC
@NTC 8 жыл бұрын
+DrDalyO that was a good point to start with, also I wanna add the following. A structure may completely fail even well before yielding is reached. For some, buckling stresses may well below the yield stress. Thus the users have to calculate the "failing point", which takes into account the all possible failure modes, and compare the stress from ANSYS with that value.
@muhammadfahadarain1643
@muhammadfahadarain1643 6 жыл бұрын

Hi is it possible to find the load required to reach a given deformation without trial and error?
@drdalyo
@drdalyo 8 жыл бұрын
+Justin Prendeville good question. No not really. Instead of applying a load, you can apply a "displacement" and then check the reaction forces to get an idea. Or you can do the trial and error but by using "parameters" so it will do it automatically

Is this using 3D beam elements, I have to do something similar for 1D beam elements; would these be sketching a line and using a cross section as opposed to sketching a rectangle and extruding?
@drdalyo
@drdalyo 7 жыл бұрын
+Liam Owens yes you could sketch a line and create a line body with an applied cross section, it would give very similar results and use less computing resources. See my video on linear buckling, i believe i use a line body. Also my video on a bridge i believe. Let me know if you have any other questions

Hi Sir, first of all thanks for your sharing knowledge, really appreciate it. One quick question, I'm doing exactly the same case as yours but in 2D, thin-shell elements type. I was wondering that would i just be sketching the 2D surface and define the shell mesh in order to obtain less computational time and more accurate result or there is some other change should be made during this method? Thank you
@drdalyo
@drdalyo 7 жыл бұрын
+Piyabut Tangjitmanngamkul Your much better off using Beam elements, not shell. Draw a single line in modeler and then create a line out of it, then apply a crossection to that line (in modeler). So in this case it will be a square section, then apply the thickness/dimensions.
