The reason why the law protecting hams from antenna restrictions was enacted is that hams are an invaluable resource during emergencies. Prohibiting hams to erect antennas could potentially lead to the loss of many lives during an emergency. most ham equipment nowadays is very efficient and not likely to cause interference the way it did years ago.
@DENMONKEY7 жыл бұрын
bottom line, "because they don't like it" they said it over and over again. Just because YOU don't like it, does not make you right . How often do you think it the normal goings on that these people would even look up at the antenna ? hardly at all. Except they have their noses out of joint and will spend most of their time looking at it now and whinging about it. Go on about your boring lives and find somewhere else to invest your time that actually matters or makes a difference. I'm sure if there is a disaster and he becomes a central communication point, they will be lined up at his door. Not to mention, its a bit rude to do a spot on the antenna and not even speak to its owner. Talk about one sided bullshit.

I liked that this article it clearly said what many people don't understand. Federal law in both the United states and Canada make a very direct and inarguable point. Licenced ham radio operators are IMMUNE from State, city and home owners agreements as well as local rules around antennas. They must be constructed in an accepted safe way and they can't be so tall that if they fall over they land on someone else's house and they are subject to height restrictions around airports but they CAN NOT be prohibited because they are ugly or because that are seen as something that lowers property values. If he is licenced and he owns the property the neighbors, the city and the state have no say in the matter whatsoever. They need to suck it up and get a life.
@Ziknazoo10 жыл бұрын
Good post Mark. Could you see a law protecting hams passed today in the "land of no?"
@markhadley154510 жыл бұрын
Yes actually, the law was not passed to be nice it was a totally self serving law and that why it has never been removed. The network of repeaters paid for by private money that is set up my hams is seen as a great resource by the various federal governments. These networks must by law publish their input and output frequencies and tones so they can be used in an emergency situation by fire police and federal agencies. It has saved the government BILLIONS on the cost of building and maintaining a redundant emergency communication system. There is a very real self serving reason the government has for promoting ham radio and if the federal government can be counted on for one thing its to enthusiastically allow and or force people to spend their money for its benefit

Amateur radio is not a "hobby", it's a radio service.
@garycook5125 Жыл бұрын
@@leo2395 The FCC doesn't fund the Amateur Radio Service so bored people can have a hobby; the government doesn't fund hobbies. The FCC rules trump your opinion. Ham licensees call it a hobby, as an excuse to be technologically ignorant and lazy.
@garycook5125 Жыл бұрын
@@leo2395 YOU- "Neither the FCC(to my knowledge) or Hakom(my countries equivalent of FCC) fund amateur radio" This statement alone, that you've made, clearly indicates that you don't know how the world works. YOU- "There is nothing "service" like in tracking the number of countries you talked to, collecting awards, participating in contests, building your own equipment, experimenting, making new and talking to your old friends, observing how different frequencies of waves propagate... " All of this you've described as not being "service like", is correct. All of it falls under FCC 97.113 a, 5 (Prohibited Transmissions). None of those activities are what the Amateur Radio Service was created for. It's the very profitable ARRL who encourages the misuse of the FCC regulated radio service. It's these childish "fun" activities that are causing the decline of membership in the ARRL, and the (almost non-existent), interest in becoming a Ham. My hope is that licensed Hams will wakeup, and realize the damage these childish activities are causing to the radio service before it becomes the next CB radio band graveyard. This is my final reply to you on the subject; good luck.

I see that this video is 11 years old. But the issue remains. Sadly, in Southern California we have cities that have persisted in denying FCC licensed and regulated amateur radio operators from erecting antennas of this type. One antenna had been in place for 50 years and one particular city forced the property owner to take the antenna down. The courts ruled in favor of the property owner but the city effectively bankrupted him. The ARRL was instrumental in reaching some type of compromise but we have other cities that have mandated that you may not have an antenna more than 20 feet above your roof and or visible from the street. As an active emergency communicator that works all bands I would tell those of you against these type of antennas to rethink your position. Think of Hurricane Katrina and how it was the amateur radio operators that moved in in no time flat and provided communication when all other communication systems had failed. You can't tell someone to move out in the country. your $275,000 house means nothing to those of us in Southern California where the same type of house goes for $800,000. The cost of the home is irrelevant. The fact that the homeowner lowers it to 20 feet when not in use shows that he at least is trying to cooperate and be a friendly neighbor. The least these people could do is accept a compromise.

All hams must do RF exposure evaluations if they are producing above certain amounts of power at different frequencies. 1.8MHz - 7.3MHz above 500 Watts -snip- 28Mhz - 225MHz above 50 Watts It all depends on the frequency

good for him! i live in a neighborhood that has antenna restrictions too. I am planning on putting up a 40 foot mast with 2 UHF antennas in my backyard for my home built back up emergency repeater. I have done some studying and found out that I can legally put up an antenna under FCC regulations as well. :) 73, Alex KD8BVS

Giant monster antennas like this are just awful! Holy crap, can you imagine the piles of bird poop underneath this megalithic monstrosity?
