Excellent video. I have a scanner very similar to yours (GRE PSR-282) but have been very disappointed in the small amount of channels or frequencies that l get. Now, thanks to you great video you have explained the problem and l will change the rubber type aerial that came with it for something better. Any advice on what's best for airband say 118 to 138mhz? I'm in the UK.

Thanks for sharing. When using a telescopic antenna and 'tuning' it to a frequency, should we be sizing it to a 1/4 wave length for best results?

it wont even try to listen into janesville from where i live which is in beloit wisconsin. that's where a telescoping antenna comes in.

Ive tried 3 on my whistler ws1040 each costing more and more money. NONE have improved nor restored my previous reception, and Ive re programmed it weekly for about 4-5 weeks... all of a sudden in my home of 10+M y6ears I cant pick up anything and my scanner was active nearly 24/7. I cannot figure it ouot.

it is really worth it ... I can tell you once you get used to changing the size depending on frequency .. you will always use it !

I use an outside antenna and there are times you need to attenuate the signal. Depending on scanner, you will find there are attenuatior switches that will help or you can get external in-line sma attenuators. Now why would you want an outside anttena that you would have to attenuate? Because he really helps improve the signal to noise ratio. If you are only tunning trunked digital signals might not be an issue. But even then, if it is a weak signal you are after, outside is the only way to get it clean and stable!

I live in the United Kingdom I have three scanners but there is not much going on we can't get our police on it now they have gone digital they are on a thing called tetra so all I pick up is are craft ham radio and a few taxis so having a scanner in the UK is really a waste of time my new scanner is uniden bearcat ubc 75XLT 300 channel came with rubber duck I have one for my 27 megs cb it's a long black thing with BNC it works OK on my new scanner but it was made for 27 megs so what aerial do you recommend where I live in the UK, I live in a town and on both sides there is open land you can see for miles so I am trying to find a good antenna 10 10 for now

may be a silly question .... but my realistic home base scanner has the possibility of two antennas ... the extending one that screws in the top ( standard) and one BNC on back for external antenna...... So my question is .. Can i use both at same time ? and would this be better ?

Both can be at the same time, but the BNC connector is made to be used with outdoor antennas that will make your scanner receive more signals, when such a antenna is there, the screw on top antenna is pretty much useless

@ Brad Jones - I own a AOR 1000 it is possible to receiver Analog Cellular but its ILLEGAL to do that. ALL modern scanner / communication receiver have the Analog Cellular removed as well as the Digital Mobile Phones as well. you can Legally buy a Communication Receiver that can Receive Digital Cellular if you have a Gov License .

the Radio Shack works EXCELLENT on VHF AIR and Military AIR . its 1/2 wave for both and you have to have it FULLY extended for VHF AIR and Only the Top Collapsed for Military Air. I use my Radio Shack ANT for Airshows !!!!!

the Radio Shack is not just a Telescopic ANT . its center loaded as well. that means its 1/2 wave if you tune it properly. by fully extending it for LOW frequency and Short or with Top collapsed ONLY for High Frequency. I use it Fully extended for HF Recceve and Bottom collapsed for 144-220 and Top only Collapsed for 440 - 900 +. its operating range is 25 - 1300 MHz .

the Radio Shack has Recceve range of 25 - 1300 Mhz. you can transmit on 144 - 440 . you have to have ANT fully extended for Low Frequency and Shorter or Top Collapsed for High Frequency.
