I bought a Revco Discone in 1990 with an N type connector. Connected to my AOR AR1000 scanner via 10m of RG213 it worked a treat and it was in my loft at that! I still have most of it left after experiments over the years and I may even get it back up one day. If anyone comes across and Revco aerial (antenna) products second hand consider buying - they are really well made!

Thank you, yes I agree, it is not brilliant at any particular frequency, though fairly good and far better than my white stick on the airband, but it covers so much, just one antenna, that makes it useful for a sdr wide band reciever such as an sdr play. If I hear something I like I can then always switch to my hf or 2m 70cm antenna for a little more strength. Regards Steve

Thanks for the video, Steve. Discones, with elements all the same length, show lobe break-up at frequencies higher than where the elements are more than about a half wavelength long. Unfortunately, at the frequencies above where the sloped elements are more than about a wavelength long, the main lobe tilts downwards; the horizontal lobe can reduce, and hence performance can become inferior to a half-wave vertical. I think this can be seen on the polar-plots in the manufacturer's data for the AOR discone and the Icom discone.

Stephen, Thanks for this video. I just discovered your channel and it looks like my interests parallel yours. I am not yet a licensed ham and so I mostly listen and sometimes transmit on the CB frequencies. I have a small garden with a DX commander vertical, a RTL-SDR dongle and two Yaesu FRG-7700 receivers. The unfortunate part is I am located in Central Canada and I struggle to get signals from Northern Europe. After viewing your video I think the discone would be good for VHF/UHF frequencies but I am not sure about HF. Do you think a long wire (30 m long) at 4 m high would be better than the discone for the HF bands? I am going to try the discone but was interested in your opinion.
@EnthusiastSteveM6WVV
@EnthusiastSteveM6WVV 2 жыл бұрын
Hello Bob, thank you for your comment. Yes, I believe a 30m long wire would work better on hf than compared to the hf discone. It will work nicely on hf but not as well as a long wire. Especially if you also fit a manual tuner so you can tweak the wire to be resonant on the band you are listening on. You may find some hf signals still get received well on the discone because it is vertically polarised and your wire will be horizontal. Though once a vertical or horizontal transmitted signal refracts off of the atmosphere layers all bets are off which way it is once received. It can and does twist and turn. Will be interest see how you get on. Regards Steve

Nice video, and a good looking antenna. Did I miss the part, or did you mention, if there is a height above ground requirement? Obviously as with all antennas, higher is better, but is there a point at which too low is detrimental? Here at my QTH, I could probably get 10 to 15 feet above the roofline, but no more. Thanks
@EnthusiastSteveM6WVV
@EnthusiastSteveM6WVV 2 жыл бұрын
Height is a strange one, I have run mine from 20ft to 35ft off the ground. If its on a pole near to the roof of the house, you may find the roof acts as a reflector/added ground plane and having the antenna higher some local signals are weaker. Have an experiment, just make sure if using a metal pole it does not pass by both lower and top legs, or the pole will interact and reduce the antennas ability to hear anything. Best is a sturdy fibreglass pole and low loss coax, especially for the uhf bands. Good luck, enjoy, regards Steve

Excellent as always Steve, Just a question, do you have any problems with the discone with overload from either local MW stations or Local FM stations, I use an SDRPlay RSP2 I have an 8kw FM transmitter 2 miles from me and a 760w MW station about 3 miles away. I also have a Preselector for MW/HF, will this work with the Discone as it's a 50ohm feed by looks of it.

Hello Tony, I have not experienced any overload problems from my transmitters, got an Absolute radio one just 2 miles away. FM also works OK for me. I find some aircraft to be the biggest signals which fly overhead but only a problem on the adjacet airband frequency. The rsp is pretty good with its MW and dab filters. I have not tried a preselector but cannot see any reason why it would not help. Regards Steve

Thanks for the video Stephen. Been looking at this one for a while to replace my "standard" 25-1300mhz discone that I'm using with an RSPdx. I promised myself to get one when SDRplay released SDR connect (which they have now done in a basic version). I'll use locking nuts with the radials. BTW do you happen to know the thread size for these so I can get them locally, whilst waiting for the antenna?
@EnthusiastSteveM6WVV
@EnthusiastSteveM6WVV 9 ай бұрын
Sorry i am unsure of the thread size, sometimes its a 8 or 10mm nut but the thread is dependent on origin of manufacture. I was unawate connect was out, it will be interesting to see what benifits it brings. It is a good all round antenna, mine is still up an in one piece dispite winds and rain. Pure resonant antennas are better but this was does a fair job at covering most activity. All the best and thank you for the comment. Regards Steve

Interesting. A future video comparison with your LW ant would be brilliant. Also how does it cope with noise ? I am very lucky I have very low noise in countryside location , but many have big problems with noise , is this a good aerial in the battle against noise ? Tks .
@EnthusiastSteveM6WVV
@EnthusiastSteveM6WVV 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Rob, not getting any noise related issues from my location with it, because it is a compromise antenna it tends to receive well across the bands but not excellently, thus not pulling all the extra noise in. A standalone antenna for a specific band will always work better but not many have the space or fundinds to do that. It is a vertically polarised antenna but as top section is physically horizontal I think it keeps noise, generally from vertical sources down. Regards Steve

@EnthusiastSteveM6WVV
@EnthusiastSteveM6WVV 2 жыл бұрын
Hello Andy, I would say no, as those antennas are already resonant on those bands they will receive a good signal. The hf discone will hear signals on all those bands but not as well as a purpose built antenna for that band. The hf discone is designed for the likes of a sdr receiver such as a sdr play, rtl dongle or scanner that covers many bands. This one antenna will hear signals across all the bands, I use a white stick 2m antenna on the 2m amateur band but it is outperformed by the discone across the aircraft and marine bands. The benifits is that just have one antenna up to listen across the radio spectrum. If marine monitoring or a particular ham band is what you like, yes the discone will do a decent job but another marine band antenna or a wire for that amateur band will work better. Regards Steve

Steve, would I be right in thinking that the "spaceship flying saucer" looking TV antenna on my camper van works in a similar way? It's incredibly good at pulling in digital TV signals, despite the absolute fact that those transmissions did not exist when the antenna was created!? I have toyed with the idea of hooking an "old school" scanner (realistic pro 2026) to it.
@janetlegg6623

The saucer one will be a series of dipole loop type antennas, but will work across some of the vhf uhf band, worth a try connecting a receiver you never know what it which up. Experimenting is part of the fun in the hobby. All the best regards Steve

Hi, not tried a pre amp, I know the ones you mean, I always though if you could run power to it you could water proof it and mount at the antenna for maximum effect. Nuts will be best option to secure as the radials need a good contact, thread lock would isolate the radials. Ty for your comment. All the best regards Steve.

A good loop will outperform this antenna on hf as loops are generally tuneable. But this cheap simple antenna will hear hf stations and does a fair job. I like it as I can switch uhf, vhf and hf bands on my sdr play without constantly changing antennas. If I do hear a weak station I can then always change to another to hear it better but aas a compromise antenna it does work. Regards Steve

@EnthusiastSteveM6WVV
@EnthusiastSteveM6WVV 2 жыл бұрын
Hello Mike, yes I covered mw, I tried 80m amateur band but at the time I did not hear any stations, that was around mid day, I have picked up on 80m, a long wire will perform better but as a compromise single antenna, so not having to constantly unplug and change antennas over so you can just sit and switch about using a sd it is I think very good. Physics dictate one antenna will not do everything but this does a fair job. Good low loss coax feed is important once you get up into and above uhf. If you had a sdr duo, 2 antenna inputs then options open up further. Regards Steve

Sorry, Steve, I don't know how I missed that. Are the elements much bigger than your 25-1300MHz discone elements?
@EnthusiastSteveM6WVV
@EnthusiastSteveM6WVV 2 жыл бұрын
@@mikebeall3257 a few cm longer, I think it's fully resonant at around 88-90ish MHZ, 90CM down legs, it hears well below this on the 4m band, not tried it on 6m, then the vertical element takes over below this. It is physically stronger, thicker radials and legs compared to my other discone. Like I said it is a compromise antenna but big advantage you can listen to so many bands without unplugging and plugging in other antennas. One antenna for the listener to hear across a verity of frequencies.

Hi Joe, yes you can make them, if talking the horizontal top ones, approx 29cm long plus the threaded bit. If you are talking verticals like on some discones, they are generally 1/4 wave of the particular frequency you want to hear, ie airband, marine etc but to be honest the vertical elements can change how a discone works. You are basically confusing it making a di pole arrangement. Put some top horizontal bars/rods in and it should work well. Thank you for the comment, regards Steve

Would increasing its size improve reception? How about putting a few of them on the corners of your property say 100's of feet apart and connecting them would that improve receiving capabilities? I'm looking into building an off grid base station and am focusing more on receiving than transmitting. In a complete grid down situation I would like to be able to receive news 1000+ miles in all directions.
@EnthusiastSteveM6WVV
@EnthusiastSteveM6WVV Жыл бұрын
By increasing the soze you extend the lower end of the frequency range. Generally the distance between the end of the top horizontal section and the end of the lower leg is a quarter wavevof the lowest freq it can receive well on, times that by 10 to get the upper freq. So if 70mhz is the lowest freq the highest is 700 mhz. You may be better with small beam antennas pointing out in the direction you wish to receive or if you want a wider freq range consider a log periodic. Similar band width to a discone but higher gain to pull in weaker signals. Regards Steve

Never as good as a dedicated antenna for that band but does work for local contacts, repeaters etc. As far as long wave goes, it does hear stations but to be honest not brilliantly. Something like a small loop for lw/mw would be better. It is a good antenna across a massive frequency band and as such does a fair job, ideal for a scanner radio. I got an old aor 3000 scanner, hf to uhf, one antenna works for me. Overall its a good antenna, but not brilliant on all frequencies. Hello Steven, It is all dependent on budget, a good 2m / 70cm antenna will also be a good receive antenna for some of the vhf and uhf bands. I personally use a Comet GP6 antenna, quoted gain figures are: Gain 2m 6.5/ 70cms 9.0dB. The best vhf uhf antenna I have used, if you wanted more performance you need to consider a Diamond 510 antenna, Gain (dB): 2m 8.3/ 70cms 11.7, both need to be raised over 25ft off the ground to get the best out of them. I only use 10 watts but when conditions allow have had contacts over 80 miles, over 200 when lift conditions prevail (On FM). Good coax is essential on the 70cms band, you will halve the received signal if you use a poor quality coax. A Good coax is worth the expenditure above 400 MHz. Maybe I missed it.....whats the model of the antenna?
@EnthusiastSteveM6WVV
@EnthusiastSteveM6WVV 7 ай бұрын
It is a hf discone, made by mutiple companies, it is a compromise antenna, a resonant one for a particular frequency would be better but if you want to listen to hf, vhf uhf and do it with just one antenna this will do it. Available from many uk radio stores. A search on Internet will find them.

will this work for digital televison ??
@EnthusiastSteveM6WVV
@EnthusiastSteveM6WVV Жыл бұрын
If the signal is strong enough it should, if its within the frequency range of the antenna. Though a yagi or periodic antenna, a directional antenna may be better. All depends on strength in your area of the digital signals. A weak signal may require an antenna with more gain to reduce signal loss. Regards Steve

@EnthusiastSteveM6WVV
@EnthusiastSteveM6WVV 3 ай бұрын
Yes, dmr is just a mode like AM or FM, it will cover all the frequencys vhf uhf where dmr mode is used. It is a compromise antenna as not as good as a single dedicated antenna for a certain freq but not many can have dozens of antennas up so a good all round antenna with hf rx as well. Regards Steve

@EnthusiastSteveM6WVV would this work in loft temporarily also what difference between this one compare to SSS-MKII Super Scan Stick 25 To 2000 MHz Scanner Antenna dmr nfm.and air ban frequencys
@EnthusiastSteveM6WVV
@EnthusiastSteveM6WVV 3 ай бұрын
@@eventsvideos123 yes it would work in a loft if you have the space, a scanstick type antenna works but probably not as good as a discone due to its design. A discone is really a nest of dipoles with a 10x rx range, meaning the longest leg 1/4 wave freq will work all the way up 10 fold. If leg was 1/4 wave on say 80 mhz it will work up to 800mhz. It also works outside these freqs but with a higher impedance, meaning it will be deaf to any signals. A white stick will be a mono freq with performance dropping off away from it, ie if designed for 144mhz it will still hear marine on 156 and aircraft on 120 but performance will drop away quicker than a discone. Loft will work if not too much electrical items up there or metal foil insulation etc.

I can't find a model number, it's just known as a scan king hf discone. Currently limited stock here in the UK, it appears to have been a popular buy past few months. Hope you find one soon. Have a look on nevada radio here in UK and other UK radio dealers. Regards Steve

Hello, many radio dealers sell them, here in the UK, Nevada, Moonraker radio and others. Just do a search on Internet for hf discone and you will find suppliers near you. A band specific antenna will always be better but for convenience, one antenna will hear all and better than the common white stick vertical on some bands. Regards Steve

@EnthusiastSteveM6WVV
@EnthusiastSteveM6WVV Жыл бұрын
Its an hf discone made and sold by many companies. Its capable of rx across hf, vhf and uhf bands, ideal if you want one antenna in your sdr receiver, dongle or scanner. It will not work as well as a dedicated antenna for a specific frequency but if you know how these discones work they give a a very broadband of reception. No switching of antennas or lot of antennas up in the air. A search for a hf discone, nevada, moonraker or similar dealers should find the antenna for further reading on it. Regards Steve

Discones are crap, i don't care who claims they are great they are shit.. you're better off buying a tuned white stick as a discone, even the one claimed to be able to TX show very poor resonance and they have zero gain, look pretty work like crap..

@CBRadioWayBack10-4 Жыл бұрын
@@joefish6091 At VHF, UHF and SHF yes it's all about height, the signals are line of sight, but at HF it's majority ground wave, but saying height is everything then a coathanger will work well if it's high enough, but change a discone to something resonant on the bands you use you will see they are junk, same as those who use RG213 and think it's 'low loss' coax, then when people use proper coax they see what 'low loss' really is..

If you use loctite you will greatly reduce the conductivity of the radials, you need good metal to metal contact to make them work effectively. I use a pair of pliers with tape on the jaws to tighten them and had no problems.
