Fee Waybill: The Formation of The Tubes

The Tubes formed in 1972. Lead singer of the band, Fee Waybill, sat down with Antenna TV to talk about the formation of The Tubes, which involved a move from an Arizonan ghost town to San Francisco, and a couple of bands from Phoenix joining forces in the City By The Bay.

A national treasure. And that comes from a geordie from the north east of England. One of the greatest front men ever and song writers. Love the tubes and love mr waybill. Class

I saw The Tubes in Calgary in 1982 and it is still the best concert I have seen.

First time I saw the band I was blown away by the stage show. The next time I was blown away by their musicianship. Wow

I was 15-1980. My brother played their first LP. Hooked since then. No KZfaq. Got the second and third LPs and the LIVe LP. Had to imagine the shows. Heard stories from my sisters who were at the concerts about how wild they were. Got the Completion Backward Principle and Outside Inside LPs and FINALLY saw them in 1983 in concert. I saw them live 4 times. Still a fan and collecting. Hoping to see them in FL.

Fee' s theatrical punch literally made The Tubes work - and sell. Not to depreciate the boys' talented musicianship but it's that startling White Punks on Dope etc effect that put bums on seats.🎉

In the early '70s I used to see the Tubes at the Town and Country bar in Ben Lomond. On the Marquee they were billed as the Tubes- formerly the Beans- formerly the Mendocino All Stars. They would have all you can eat spaghetti and french bread for like 4.00 dollars and a carafe of red wine cheap. Of course Fee would emerge as Quay throwing ludes out into the crowd and later donning chaps and cowboy get up and just kill a version of El Paso. Great times indeed.

I've been to Jerome, AZ! A quaint little place with a great BBQ joint and a winery with two huge windows that look out at the valley below. A spectacular view!

Fee has said years ago that he was their "roadie" in the early days and found out they were auditioning for a new lead voc. He said he wanted to try out. The rest of the band was blown away and they stopped the auditioning. He was the new front guy.
