Fee is a classic pro-performer. He always knew the importance of being the leader. The Tubes were a breath of fresh air amongst the pop bands of the 70's! Rock on Fee!!

I must seen the Tubes live 7-8 times in a span of a year in 81-82. Made so much sense Fee didn't do drugs with the physical performances he did. You could see the great shape he was in.

The Tubes are my all-time favourite band. They never got the recognition they so truly deserve. Every album they made was epic and satirized the American consumerist culture that swept across the world. Fee is a great lyricist, frontman and vocalist. One of a kind. Now for me is their best album.

Thank you for this great interview with Fee Waybill. He is one of the most dynamic front men in the industry, and still going strong at 72 years of age. It is good to see him healthy and happy, no doubt due to being smart enough to discipline himself from the vices that shorten career's and lifespans too. Cheers from Huntington Beach, California!

You know what I wish...is that in 1983, someone would have videoed and interviewed the huge stars of the 30s and 40s who were still alive, some still performing like Billy Eckstine, and just let them talk - just like this! Being on the road when there were no interstate highways, when the only way you could hear music besides the radio was to buy a record and put it on, and music and media was not a 24/7 thing, and there was no such thing as a drum machine, a punch-in and everything in the studio was live and if you didn't get it live, you didn't get it and you couldn't fix the mistakes. Because in the very near future, virtually every big rock star of the 60s will be gone, and all people will have is the interviews. Bless you for your work, John Beaudin!

I been watching a lot of these guys (The Tubes) lately as I've only just discovered them. The other night i happen to watch Xanadu , the Olivia newton john movie as I've never seen it and now that she's just passed away, i wanted to watch it to celebrate her life and to remember her as i did when i was a kid with that crush i had on her. Anyway as i was watching most of the music and dance routines..(i skipped most of the film because the story was just boring) I was surprised to see The Tubes were also in the film too performing. What a strange coincidence.

Fee Waybill is such a cool guy. I saw the Tubes a couple times in the mid-late 70's, and a bunch of times more recently at a place called Penn's Peak, here in NE PA. They still do a great show, although not quite as elaborate as the old days. After the show, Fee was at the merch table and hanging out by the bar. Such a unique band that could really write and play.

I believe the lake they are referring to outside of Edmonton is Devil’s Lake? Some entrepreneur thought it would be a good idea to put a music venue an hour outside of the city in the middle of nowhere and people would flock there. They didn’t and it went out of business soon after !

Hopefully a lot of young musicians hear this. Many think Keith Moon is the way to go and "wow he was so cool", I could mention names but a lot of the 80's poser bands that did a lot of drugs are toast now, they didn't stay in shape, didn't take care of themselves. Many many musicians from many eras didn't make it, from jazz and blues in the early 1900's to today, country music was rife with drugs. I've been blown away by how many singers smoked cigs, not even pot, just cigs will kill your voice, ruin it, that's your dream why ruin it??

I meant what I said as we were talking at the bar after the show Prairie...The few minute jams between songs while Fee was backstage changing...Your drumming, including solos is spot on, nothing exaggerated. The TUBES are great. While Fee is the lead singer and frontman , as he said several times, it's the band and their exceptional musicianship that is what really makes them great and that Art school mentality made those earliest years great fun and Fee fit in perfectly. From your interview, Fee seems more guilty of ART excess than rock access. I think I did more drugs in HighSchool than he has his whole life. I'm the one who thought his heart had stopped. I'm the one who had to bring my gilfreind back from a speedball OD.. I'm the one who had to quit to save his life. Stopping was nothing for Fee because he didn't live the Rock and Roll lifestyle, he wasn't addicted, he wasn't a user. He lived the artist/writers life, at one point I think he was drinking too much and pickling himself. He rigthed himself and came back home to the Tubes healthier. Fee and Robert Plant are still rocking the 70s at 70 because they statyed pretty clean but what happened to Page. He might have crawled free from the dope bag , but the journey seems to have left him half empty and he's never been the same. I think you missed the story here. Discipline and success not excess.

The second concert I ever attended, in 7th grade, was The Tubes. It was the same night as the big Who return concert in 1982, and they did covers of Baba O'Reilly and The Kids are All Right. Then in the encore they did White Punks on Dope and the bikini laden dancers dumped giant dumpsters of white powder and bathed their nude bodies in the powder like an orgy. Blew my 13 year old mind.
