@@mamaz1234 yeh man huge shout out to Persia (ancient iran). Societal conduct that was strictly against slave labour and equality among genders and 300 had the filthy audacity to portray Greece as noble and Persia as evil while it was just plainly the other way around. Sadly do not like the current state which is based on religion and not democratic values like in the past.

The spices don't build immunity, your body just gets used to the bacteria. I'm pretty sure that, if a European just ate a lot of turmeric, cinnamon and coriander, they would still get diarrhea in India or SE Asia. You just have to get used to the bacteria, as the locals are. And of course, the food really won't be an issue. The only thing someone from the west should try to avoid is tap water. I'm pretty sure I've always gotten fucked up from ice cubes in my drinks, not from the food.

Indian vegetarian food is not wimpy, pretentious and overelaborately refined meat replacement like so much of Western veggie food. It is a real entity all to itself, and has thousands of years of history behind it. I so respect Bourdain for not being a vegetarian snob in this case. I now realize that much of his vegetarian dissing is based on a deep understanding of what the joy of eating, the soul of eating, is all about. Too bad animals have to be killed though. Signed, Vegetarian Guy..

Sure. Good comment. At least he made a conscious choice. So many people just fill their bellies with meat, because they don't know any better. To every meat-eater out there: Try one vegetarian day each week. Try to look up some recipes. You will be surprised how delicious it can be.

ok you westerners, here me out cuz i have a revelation for you. you need to know once and for all that, the first few times we south asians try your food it makes us crap too much too, it's just what you call "the body getting adjusted to the new diet in its system" whether the food is healthy or not. get it?!! cuz you have suddenly consumed something out the routine in terms of your regular diet for your body. so it's just what the human body does. secondly,...jeeezz indian food is relatively healthier!!! yess!! daaayyymmm! just like any other ethnic cuisine is. When it's comes to nutrition let me open your eyes that most indian food veg or non-veg is primarily organic veggies/poultry that we shop locally, less processed in relatively cheaper, and traditionally healthy ways(depending on how good of a host you have) and is surely nutritious & healthy enough or should I rather say certainly better in some cases than the highly-processed-additive containing-nutritionless synthetic western food, packaged, shelved, for god knows how long with preservatives, food that most probably has mold and yeast from poorly managed food processing units, long preserved packaged meats with tape worms and shit. :| Thirdly, when it comes to matter of "eating with hands", even the wealthiest of wealthy people in india have to eat certain food with hands, cuz that's just the proper etiquette and tradition, done hygienically by washing hands with soap before and after the meal(part of our dining routine in an indian setting), and whether it's a restaurant or at a friend/host's house our dining areas are equipped with a sink and some form of soap. So the next time when the subject of Indian food and health comes up in your conversations remember this comment. ok?!! :) thanks and come again! bye bye! :)

The key is to know what to avoid in India. Let me lay down a few thumb rules: 1) For small meals, avoid anything that costs less than 50 Rupees. 2)For main meals, like lunch and dinner, avoid anything that costs less than 140 Rupees per person. 3) Eat in proper restaurants. Do not eat street food. Eat the same items that street food sellers sell at covered restaurants. 4)Drink only bottled water. 4 good brands are Bisleri, Kinley, Aquafina and IRCTC. Make sure the seal of the bottle isn't broken when you are buying the bottle. 5) Eat in moderate quantities. Indian food is delicious, but you gotta control yourself, as it can be very heavy. 6)Eat only one heavy meal a day. A light meal can consist of curd(yoghurt) rice, vegetable salad, rice and lentils(daal) and boiled eggs. 7) Buy and eat lots of fresh fruits. Don't buy cut fruits, as they may be unhygienic. Buy them whole and cut it yourself at the hotel. 8) Drink 7-8 litres of water every day. If you get gas or acidity, then buy 'ENO' from any medical store and drink it. You'll be fine in a few minutes. Follow these thumb rules, and you'll be fine in India. Cheers!

I think Bourdain is being a bit too generous here. As someone who grew up here and visited India regularly, you absolutely can get sick eating Indian street food. It won't kill you, but its an extremely unpleasant experience. Tyler Cowen, notable foodie, suggests to avoid places where you don't know where the water source is coming from. Indians living there have a built up immunity, but westerners do not. That said, when you go to reputable places, the food is amazing. And the meat and fish dishes are superlative.
