I always refer to guys like Nico Rosberg in F1 in cases like these. He won the Championship, best Lewis Hamilton in equal machinery and called it a day. Messi only stuck around playing at the highest level in Europe until he won the World Cup and then went to the US to make some retirement money. Pele won 3 World Cups, and retired early as well as he felt he achieved everything and became more of a celebrity at the end also finishing his career in the US. You don't need to overstay your welcome, those guys are secure in what they are and have achieved, Michael Jordan was the same, he even left for another sport.
