It emerged today that Liverpool have turned down the chance to sign Newcastle United winger Anthony Gordon.
But is a move for the England international dead in the water? Or could the conditions exist for it to be revived in the coming days?
Reds reporter David Lynch is here to take a deep dive into what we know about a potential swoop for Gordon.
He examines the Reds' left-wing overload, the Magpies' desire to involve Jarell Quansah in a any deal, and the PSR concerns that drove the clubs into talks.

Yes would be a very good signing. I think Diaz is more technically skilled, but Gordon is quicker and more direct. I think Gordon’s output is much better too. He’s scored some really important goals for Newcastle.

I’m not sure why Barcelona are keep being mentioned as a destination for Diaz this summer. They have to make up a 100 million euro hole in their own finances just to register some of their own players for next season. Seeing as they haven’t even launched their new kit yet, and they can’t sell their good young players without causing a riot, the chances of them picking up anyone outside of their usual crew of Bosman canon fodder signings - sign for nothing today, sell for cash next season - is unlikely.

Newcastle coming out of that deal with a player as promising as Quansah would be a joke. Plus it just creates bigger headaches for us, we've got to get a CB in not lose one of our most promising. As you said too, we're stacked at LW anyway. I do like Gordon but I'm glad LFC immediately shut down the idea of Quansah being involved. The only regret will be if Diaz ends up moving to Spain later in the window, then it starts to look like a missed opportunity.

I'd rather keep Lucho rather than gamble on losing him and replacing him with Gordon, good as he is. If we hold out and see what newcastle come up with but, like you say, it doesn't seem likely OR necessary for us. Anyway, much appreciation for clearing that one up for us DL.

When news of this broke I was a bit taken back that Newcastle thought Liverpool would let go of Quansah for another left winger, esp for a defender of Quansah's quality. Gordon is a good player but be reasonable... they should have asked for Phillips AND Van Den Berg xD

Gordon has had good numbers for one season, before that his g/a was 5 or 6. For 100 million Liverpool can do far better there is also no pressure at Newcastle at Liverpool its a different ball game. Mbuemo is a better option with way more consistent stats, he is slept on.

The big question is rather than Gordon why waste our time in asking for Quansah. Your point about the deadl8ne I understand makes it imperative for them to make a deal but you're right we are LW heavy even with Disz uncertainty. If they asked for Quansah and cash then that reported 100m evaluation has to be likely. But again my huge question I'd like you to ask is why have we not inquired about Bruno G who is same price range and is a position we could strengthen?

Is Diaz good enough though? If you could have Mane when he was average or Diaz this best for us who would you have ? I’d imagine most people would say Mane. And therefore I’d have to say he’s not a good enough replacement for Mane. That’s not saying he’s no good or that we don’t like him. We just want the best.

Utter tripe this. - Isak has never been “offered” to Chelsea. - Gordon has not been “offered” to Liverpool. There’s been approaches by Liverpool/Chelsea were made and that’s it. Newcastle have then intentionally let their own trusted local media report that those approaches have been made to “lessen the blow” to NUFC fans for selling Minteh and Anderson (2 very highly thought of prospects) and keep the fans on side. That’s it.

Feel like the Minteh deal now makes it less likely that Newcastle have to or are willing to sell Gordon. But the whole thing seems odd. Not sure why Newcastle let the information about this deal get out unless they were legitimately open to a sale At least it seems like we have a decent chunk of money to spend this summer!

The last time Liverpool had strength in depth on the left was when we had Mane Diaz has got this fanbase fooled, his always busy doing nothing except missing chances Jotta is always injured. Gakpo too inconsistent. We should be.going for Nico Williams , Gordon is decent but Williams is a baller . We need to get Diaz sold .
