DIY Garage Built Jon Boat

I took a 14-foot jon boat and gave it many features of a bass boat with a lot of elbow grease and a small budget! The best part? I did it myself, in my garage, and on a small budget. I used a hybrid technique by building riveted together aluminum framing for the deck extensions and 1/2 inch plywood coated in fiberglass resin and carpet for the decking and hatch lids. The boat got plenty of new storage compartments, a custom livewell, electronics, a trolling motor, a new paint job, and much much more! You too can take an old left for dead jon boat and turn it into a functional one man bass fishing machine!

Hey man I’m thinking of doing the same thing. Aluminum framing then plywood on top. How did you secure the plywood to the frame? And also do you think having a plywood decking is too heavy? I appreciate your feedback

Why? Get a 14 mod V and be able to take 1- 2 foot waves.

How do you add all that weight and still get into the boat without it sinking? Is there something I'm missing??? I had a jon boat that I sold because it could fit 2 ppl but it sat super low in the water you could lean over and it would take on water...that's with 2 ppl about 360 lbs, large battery (60lbs?), 2.5hp outboard about 40lbs....

Case by case basis I suppose. This boat was built for 1 guy. No issues.

If you want to put that much money in a tiny jon boat that cant take 2 foot waves, have at it. A 14 mod V would be X 3.

It's for farm ponds but thank you for the advice. I disagree though, I'd build a 1754 all welded hull if I were hitting bigger lakes.

question did it cost the same as buying a new one. in Australia the price was the same.

No. It was actually quite affordable at the time of this project. Where it can get expensive is labor hours.

@AnthonyJonesBrigadeBoats how long ago are we talking. Because most things have gone up 25% at least. But you did a beautiful job. What is the weight difference, and is it legal as mine was overweight for buoyancy. So I had to remove it all and add in extra foam to counter the weight to carry the gear.
