@RealPhotographyCompany
@RealPhotographyCompany 2 жыл бұрын
It's the alkalinity of toning in borax or washing soda that makes the print red, so don't wash it too much after the toning bath. You can refresh the red toned effect by re-toning.
@JustinPinhole

There are loads of variables including the type of paper which I think affects the final redness of the image when dry.

I'm an art teacher and interested to try this with my year 7's in their landscape project in the summer term as would be cheaper than cyanotypes because I can get hold of tumeric much cheaper than cyanotype chemicals and beetroot juice if I wanted to use that, I could get for free due to having an allotment. My question is, is there an alternative to alcohol for making the dye?

@RealPhotographyCompany
@RealPhotographyCompany 3 жыл бұрын
No you don't need photographic paper - use any good quality drawing paper, watercolour paper etc. or you can use fabric. The light sensitive emulsion is made from turmeric coated onto the paper, then it is exposed in sunlight and toned in borax - good luck!
@jdmosaics
@jdmosaics 3 жыл бұрын
@@RealPhotographyCompany can I use other plant dye powders like Pomegranate, Madder or Indigo does the Alcohol only react with Turmeric?
@RealPhotographyCompany
@RealPhotographyCompany 2 жыл бұрын
@@jdmosaics no - the plant dyes you mention are light-fast which means they don't react with sunlight the way turmeric does. That makes them better for dying fabric to make permanent colour. For the turmeric anthotypes, alcohol is used as a solvent to dissolve curcumins in the turmeric to create the light sensitive solution you coat onto paper, you can use water but it won't be so sensitive to sunlight and the process will take longer. Hope that helps!
