@avalonhill
A groundbreaking board game of armored warfare on the Eastern Front in World War II.
The game is tactical scale (company/platoon sized units) with geomorphic map boards. The 352 counters were 5/8-inch and very striking for their time.
250 meters per hex, 6 minutes per turn.
Avalon Hill Complexity Rating: 6
[From the box back]
...from the other side of the ridge comes the clanking thunder and the ominous dust-cloud that heralds the arrival of an onrushing wave of deadly steel: German armored columns on the attack.
...Russian tank commander's slam shut the hatches of their dreaded T-34's...gun crews prime their weapons and infantrymen hug the earth...
...and there-topping the rise!...a glint of dawn reflecting off the muzzle of the first German tanks...
PanzerBlitz is about to begin!
The game of PanzerBlitz enables you to re-create the drama and furious action of tactical-level armored warfare. Battle-simulations take place on a realistic mapboard which reproduces about twenty square miles of typical Russian terrain. The playing pieces are accurate symbolization of the platoon and company sized units which fought on the Eastern Front in World War II. More than a dozen different “scenarios” are given, each of which allows you to re-create a completely new game-situation in which to exercise your skill as an armor tactician. Prior military knowledge or experience, however, is not needed to play PanzerBlitz-just common sense, clear thinking and a competitive spirit.
IN EACH PANZERBLITZ GAME, YOU GET...
- 352 authentic unit counters
- Big 22”x24” mapboard in full color
- Comprehensive illustrated Rules-of-Play
- Game Situation Cards
-Campaign Analysis Booklet
...PLUS SPECIAL FEATURES THAT MAKE PANZERBLITZ A NEW DEPARTURE IN THE FIELD OF BATTLE-SIMULATION GAMES!
Tactical level combat with weapons range and fire-over-distance. Three section “Geo-morphic” mapboard which can be re-arranged to form dozens of different terrain configurations. Platoon and company sized units which can be combined to form many distinctly different battle formations. Situation cards which allow the playing of several dissimilar games using the same basic rules. Easy-to-handle oversized unit counters with authentic armored vehicle recognition silhouettes. Rules which include such considerations as: Range; Elevation; Obstacles to Fire; Fortifications; Close Infantry Assault Tactics; Weapons Interrelationships, Motor transport; Mines; Anti-Tank Guns; Mortars; Spotting; Indirect Fire...and much more!
“Panzerblitz” is a German word which literally means “armored-lightning.”

Are these video summaries based on the unit-by-unit analyses in The General magazine? Loved those at the time.

They are based on a few different things found online and by Avalon Hill, but the centrepiece is The Wargamer's Guide to Panzerblitz

One of the biggest gripes I have with this game is stacking. With loaded units you can have a tower of up to 8 counters on the board! That makes it a chore for me to take track of everything hidden under the topmost counters.
@LegendaryTactics
@LegendaryTactics Жыл бұрын
Agreed. And it's not the only game from this era with stacking issues. I'm thinking of Squad Leader, for example...

The 88mm AT is one of my faves. It can dominate a board and it *always* makes the Soviet player think twice. (If they're smart)
@LegendaryTactics
@LegendaryTactics Жыл бұрын
Yes, it is disproportionately powerful relative to the other anti-tank guns in the game

@@LegendaryTactics Well, historically it was a game-changer. The 88mm AT/Flak Kannon was the Queen of the battlefield, from Spain to Berlin. Of course the US and USSR answered it late in the war with excellent guns of their own. But the 88mm was *legendary* (yes, I know some of it was propaganda and hype, but a lot was real)

This is good advice for the novice. I came to the same conclusions years ago. Do you play with opportunity fire to avoid PanzerBush syndrome?
@joeyj6808
@joeyj6808 Жыл бұрын
I do.
@LegendaryTactics

I think it's a good idea, as it seemed to be the main complaint with the game at the time. It's interesting how many articles and letters appeared in the General defending the original design though. They generally state that opportunity fire is not as easy in real life as it seems (trying to react to units dashing from woods to woods, when your guns aren't necessarily aligned properly at that moment, for example)

@@LegendaryTactics I think it depends on a player's "vision" of how the game should play is. I know some OG AH players who swear by the core rules. But I know more these days who wouldn't enjoy what they call "Panzerbush". Me? I'll play either way as long as I have a real live opponent!

I think the op fire works properly because a substantial amount of movement must occur in LOS before you can say bang for op fire. The later sisters of Panzer Leader and Arab Israeli Wars both have it, so it makes sense to retrofit PanzerBlitz with it. Another issue of PB and PL was vehicles driving around full tilt turn after turn. This was finally addressed in AIW when the movement rate was cut hard. However, not even AIW got the indirect fire artillery modeled fully satisfactorily. Anyways, I still love all three despite their warts.

Can someone refresh my memory. Are units required to fire first and then move? Or can they move and fire at any time?
@LegendaryTactics
@LegendaryTactics Жыл бұрын
The turn sequences pretty straightforward. All units who want to fire can fire (then flip them over), then all face up units that want to move can move, and then flip over all face down units so they're face up again.

@@LegendaryTactics Ok thanks. I asked because I misunderstood the Panzerbusch concept/syndrome and how units can fire and move. I mistakenly thought it was a result of units firing "and" moving in any order and doing both. But I just looked that up and understand it better.

Not really sure why anyone is still playing this one. It was my first wargame. In 1977!! It has so many issues, I guess it’s ok to just play it “as a game” because it certainly has nothing to do with platoon-level combat on the Eastern front, that’s for sure.

I think there is a bunch of nostalgia involved, in most cases. For me, it is a game I remember reading about when I was younger, and I always wanted to try it
