A groundbreaking board game of armored warfare on the Eastern Front in World War II.
The game is tactical scale (company/platoon sized units) with geomorphic map boards. The 352 counters were 5/8-inch and very striking for their time.
250 meters per hex, 6 minutes per turn.
Avalon Hill Complexity Rating: 6
[From the box back]
...from the other side of the ridge comes the clanking thunder and the ominous dust-cloud that heralds the arrival of an onrushing wave of deadly steel: German armored columns on the attack.
...Russian tank commander's slam shut the hatches of their dreaded T-34's...gun crews prime their weapons and infantrymen hug the earth...
...and there-topping the rise!...a glint of dawn reflecting off the muzzle of the first German tanks...
PanzerBlitz is about to begin!
The game of PanzerBlitz enables you to re-create the drama and furious action of tactical-level armored warfare. Battle-simulations take place on a realistic mapboard which reproduces about twenty square miles of typical Russian terrain. The playing pieces are accurate symbolization of the platoon and company sized units which fought on the Eastern Front in World War II. More than a dozen different “scenarios” are given, each of which allows you to re-create a completely new game-situation in which to exercise your skill as an armor tactician. Prior military knowledge or experience, however, is not needed to play PanzerBlitz-just common sense, clear thinking and a competitive spirit.
IN EACH PANZERBLITZ GAME, YOU GET...
- 352 authentic unit counters
- Big 22”x24” mapboard in full color
- Comprehensive illustrated Rules-of-Play
- Game Situation Cards
-Campaign Analysis Booklet
...PLUS SPECIAL FEATURES THAT MAKE PANZERBLITZ A NEW DEPARTURE IN THE FIELD OF BATTLE-SIMULATION GAMES!
Tactical level combat with weapons range and fire-over-distance. Three section “Geo-morphic” mapboard which can be re-arranged to form dozens of different terrain configurations. Platoon and company sized units which can be combined to form many distinctly different battle formations. Situation cards which allow the playing of several dissimilar games using the same basic rules. Easy-to-handle oversized unit counters with authentic armored vehicle recognition silhouettes. Rules which include such considerations as: Range; Elevation; Obstacles to Fire; Fortifications; Close Infantry Assault Tactics; Weapons Interrelationships, Motor transport; Mines; Anti-Tank Guns; Mortars; Spotting; Indirect Fire...and much more!
“Panzerblitz” is a German word which literally means “armored-lightning.”

The ultimate plan: Overrun, then Close Assault. But most players make sure you cannot overrun them, so you have to settle for Ranged Fire, then follow up with a Close Assault. Make use of the right type of weapon (A class against Armor, etc.) That's the most basic guide to PB, I guess. Thanks again for this great series. I'm loving it!

Yes, certainly the strategy in this scenario is fairly straightforward, but I am sure this was intended as a learning game. Thank you for watching! We are looking forward to bringing you more great content about it!

I recently played #1 several times as German. Interesting puzzle. It becomes clear that the German must "sacrifice" the CP under the fort (and the five kill points) on the small hill. Thing is, if the Russian goes for those five points under the fort, he does not have time to then attack the other hill and gain enough victory points. Against a competent German set-up the Russian must attack the large hill. Regarding the first play through, no blocks should be away from the town on the large hill. They should all be around the town. A basic rule of thumb is that obstacles should be covered by fire. Mines to the "north" of the town in the woods are good, since they keep Russian tanks from hiding there and firing. All the mines and obstacles should be placed around or very near the town, and channel Russian forces into the open, exposed to German firepower, in particular the 88mm guns (which should be in forts to the north and south of the town, with fields of fire that cover both sides of the town. For more finesse, calculate the attack factors needed to kill the various Russian units, and carefully position the smaller German guns accordingly. But the 88s are the main firepower. It is kind of straight forward. As German you have a base to protect, so you set up a "fence" around it, and position your heavy weapons and infantry accordingly. A point to remember is that the blocks count as one for stacking, and the Russian can only stack two per hex. Misc. The SU-76 should only have a defense factor of like 6 or 7. It had thin armor and an open top. But whatever, it is an isolated oversight in Panzer Blitz, which is a very well designed, and was a ground breaking game with elegant rules of only a few pages (and just a few unanswered questions, which were then covered in Panzer Leader).

Of the 3 games I liked Arab-Isreali Wars the best, then again, AIW was the very first AH wargame I ever got, so it has a special place on my shelf. I was surprised to find a TON of PanzerLeader addons and expansions for free online about 8 years ago. You can get every nation, and maps for everything.

I plàyed Situation 1 tonight, using the German set-up in this video. The result was a German Marginal Victory with 7 German units lost, not one of them was a CP. The game could of gone either way, but both sides happened to roll sixes on critical attacks through the course of the game.

Yes, I think ultimately this scenario comes down to a couple of key die rolls, assuming both players know what they're doing

Great video, I love this kind of analysis and kibbitzing about wargames and especially PzB (for better and for worse, it's the one I play the most, lol). I think a couple others have already mentioned it, but I'll add that the woods north of hill-town are a huge weak spot in the setup under analysis. The SMG units can speed in there from the east riding the tanks, clear that security platoon easily from deep cover, and then by turn 4 or so all 4 tank units have safe mixed cover to hammer the fort and the town while the SMG/cavalry units advance south from there, angling more from the northwest to keep the German units SSE of town as inactive as possible. Lots of potential for the Russians in this arrangement. Another thing, but less specific, is that this arrangement doesn't seem to try to play to the German advantage of engineer-assisted CAT attacks. Seems like everyone has their own prescription, especially for S1! lol... My PzB partner and I are no exception, but anyway, thanks again for these videos. I am truly excited for the progression through S2 and beyond!

While it's been decades since I played, I think you overlooked one thing. The Russian SMG units can ride the tanks until close, and then hop off. They are more of an asset, to be factored into the strategy, than expendable. Looking forward to the rest of the series!
@LegendaryTactics
@LegendaryTactics Жыл бұрын
Yes, that was something we forgot to do. The author of the article indicated that the troops are expendable though - maybe because they can absorb some losses to keep the other guys going?
@JimEwing516
@JimEwing516 Жыл бұрын
@@LegendaryTactics Maybe because they are not factored into the winning conditions, so it doesn't matter how much the Soviets lose, as long as they achieve the victory conditions? I forget how it works, but they can ride into battle, then fight almost right away or possibly close assault right away, but they are very vulnerable while aboard the tanks. Edit... The optional rule is called Panzerblitz Assault. Infantry riding on tanks can be targeted separately and have a defense of 1. IF the AFV does an overrun, the infantry dismounts in the hex in front of the defender, then can close assault after the AFV does its overrun..

“CP units count as five units for purposes of destruction.” You need to take out at least one of the strongpoints. Take out one of the strongpoints that contains 3 units and you have seven points. See my play through on my channel if you want to see an alternate approach. I am playing having the Russian entering from the east. You need to avoid the German 88s taking out the Russian armor if at all possible. The second German setup you showed would prevent an eastern approach.

Look at where the attack is coming from. I see all that wide open space on the left and the right of the mesa and I salivate at the possibilities. A major consideration, though, is the time factor. But I see setting up just below the crest in the east or west side and have a massive, quick attack in the end game on one of the the flanks, with minor moves to prevent the Germans from concentrating against the attack. I am going to play this tonight and will post the video tomorrow. Also, I’m very good at seeing big pictures, but I’m not great on tactics though. Too many details there. I’d get lost in the details and never get out LOL

@@LegendaryTactics Hey keep up the great work. PB is a brilliantly simple game that nonetheless takes a little practice to get the feel of. Love it, but still prefer its descendant Panzer Leader. Indirect fire and opportunity fire take the game to a new level...
