Antidepressant Discontinuation Syndrome | Medications, Signs & Symptoms, Diagnosis, Treatment
Antidepressant Discontinuation Syndrome (ADS) is a condition caused by the abrupt cessation or reduction of an antidepressant medication. Abruptly stopping or reducing the dose of an antidepressant medication can cause a variety of signs and symptoms, which we discuss in this lesson. We also discuss the diagnosis and treatment of this condition.

My close friend took months painstakingly, ever so gradually, coming of Duloxetine with horrible sensations. Then, after just over a month totally ( he thought) clean, because of an unbearable living hell/nightmare he had to resume his medication. It was SO insufferable and he fells he failed trying to rid himself of this poison. He seems to be managing on 30mg where before he was taking, for many years, 60mg. He now has Atrial Fibrillation and I wonder if that is, in anyway, a result of trying to come of his antidepressant: Duloxetine, which, by the way, I hear is the worst to try and stop. There seems to be toxins everywhere: in the air, water, food, and medications. The whole world seems contaminated in more than one way…with words and advertisements too. The list goes on. The Covid jab and excess deaths + severe injuries! Evil is among us sugarcoating its poison ☠️.

I landed up in hospital for a week with the worst vertigo condition! No doctor made the connection. A fortune was spent on MRIs and different tests that led to no answers. When I got home, I started doing my own research and came to this conclusion! The symptoms carried on for three months. I will never touch an anti-depressant again! I've changed my life style. I exercise, eat healthily and keep my head occupied with positive thoughts.

I’m going through it right now.. came off paroxetine after 7 months, it’s awful to say the least! As you said vertigo is the worst, along with nausea! Day 7 since stopping, I feel a little better & it’s still progress.. I don’t feel my 100%, when I went to see a psychiatrist with my symptoms, he said, he can’t tell, the symptoms from my actual anxiety/depression, he wanted me to go back on full dose, I just moved to a different country & saw a new doctor, while my original doc weaned me off paroxetine, he never warned me of withdrawal symptoms, forget preparing me for it.. with the new doctor, he wants me to go on my full dose, if the symptoms didn’t resolve in 5 days! I was devastated, there’s not a single doctor, who gives you the whole story.. they all somehow want you to stay on medications forever, they’ll also have you believe, that’s the only way! I’m determined to get off it, because I know, I don’t want to get used to it & take it for many years & then end up with manic depression, when I’m older & can’t come off medications! Also, I always do my research.. that’s something my anxiety makes me do.. but my doctors hate it when I’ve googled something

I feel your pain, I too knew nothing about discontinuation syndrome. I came off my SSRI slowly and under Dr's care - yet, 2 days after my last dose I went into a downward spiral that lasted 3months. It was the most horrendous time of my life - the symptoms were so chronic that after 3months my Dr and I agreed that I would start the meds again. More information to patients is needed - this is way more common than reported and for many it lasts way longer than the average given. More research is needed too. A painful and debilitating experience!!

I was given Effexor for fibromyalgia, it saved my life at the time. It made almost all my issues go away. Over the years, of course, I had to keep raising the dose. Until I maxed out, and it wasn't working anymore. New Doctor switched me to Cymbalta which made me feel absolutely horrible. I was only on that for 6 weeks, up to 60mg. I couldn't continue with that. Then i was tapering off Cymbalta, i stopped 3 days ago and am the sickest that I have ever felt. This is really difficult to get through. Then having all the fibromyalgia pain back too, absolutely sucks ass. If you are on any of this poison, good luck. If you have never taken it, then please never start.

Long story short, my local pharmacy wouldn't fill my Fluvoxamine (one the highest risk medications for ADS) for 6+ days due to being "behind by 200 patients and their scripts." I have been in physical and mental hell since then. Finally got my meds filled after transferring it all to a different pharmacy. I called the first pharmacy and was on hold for hours every day trying to get my antidepressants (not a controlled substance mind you, and I was very polite and calm during all interactions with staff etcetera). I went in person twice and waited in line to speak to a human being, and explained how dangerous this is for me and that I need to be able to function right now since both of my children (one of whom is only 11 months old and has been in hospital for a respiratory virus that's going around) are sick and need me to be 100%. The tech said there's nothing that can be done. They're understaffed and behind. Is there any legal precedent for me to take action against the corporation/pharmacy itself for negligence or something of the like? I've never sued anyone in my life and I am not a Karen but this has seriously affected me, my health, and my family, and continues to still cause me physical and mental harm. On my medication my depression is very well controlled at the same dose and frequency I've been on for years. Haven't had a major or even minor depressive episode in years until this happened, and the timing could not POSSIBLY have been worse. On meds again now thanks to Wal-Mart pharmacy, but the aftereffects physically are still quite severe and my mood has not yet completely leveled back to normal. I'm very upset at the original pharmacy's complete breakdown in communication and failure to act. If they had just been honest and said they were behind and likely unable to fill on time or at all on the first day, I could have filled it elsewhere and been fine, instead of begging for help and being on hold and sick as a dog for a week+ with these still lingering issues. Thoughts? Thanks everyone.

It's unacceptable for a pharmacy to be unable to fill a valid prescription for 6 days. What pharmacy was this? Were they out of stock or just behind on orders? I'd talk to my doctor/therapist for one. I don't know about legal action or if it would be possible but this sure sounds inane to me.

Isn’t that special! Nice kind Wal-Mart to the rescue! It sounds like the first pharmacy is not a corporate giant and probably had a high percentage of staff either sick themselves or in forced isolation because a family member was sick. (Note that I’m commenting only because you asked for thoughts.) I believe it would be cruel to sue a pharmacy for something over which they likely had no control.

Also, some people suggest skipping a day every week or so for a month or 2 so you can have a backup stockpile. I don't recommend doing this if your medication has a short half-life though. I personally suggest making sure your refills overlap a few days, leave the last few pills in your previous refill untouched and open the new bottle, that way you have about 4 or 5 pills left over for emergencies.

i had looked at videos like this when i was starting to taper off. i tapered off VERY slowly. didn't want to rush n experience withdrawal symptoms. i went from 100mg down to 25mg for several months at each dosage. i did 25mg for 5 months and last week started taking it every other day. will do this for probably a month and then stop. so far I've had zero symptoms and feel great. wanted to share my positive experience so that it might give others hope. take your time dont rush it. better to take 2yrs n be off than rush it and have horrible withdrawals and start over

Sad for all of us. Been on psychiatric drugs since i was 18 for severe childhood trauma. Now at 60 I've spent the last 5 years getting off of all the drugs i've been left on. These drugs were never approved for long-term use. It was unethical imo for the plethora of psychiatrists i saw over 35 years to have not only continued to prescribe them, but to experiment with "stacking" while my brain battled with the myriad of side effects of everything from antipsychotics to seizure medications. And i was failing a child in the process. None of my prescribers ever asked about the long-term effects on my body, my child, my lack of processing my trauma (because i was a zombie) and lack of forward progress. No evaluations were done. Only prescribing and represcribing. And being damaged and lacking any advocacy i lacked autonomy and obediently did whatever the current prescriber dreamed up for me to psyche out on for the next 4-8 weeks before tweaking the cocktail again. I thought these people were saving my life! They were STEALING IT! Looking into the origins of psychiatric treatment really did it for me. Changed my life. Even our doctors have no effing clue about the origins of big pharma. We should all know. Open your eyes. Check out The Truth About Cancer. Org... Get away from your dependency on western medical practice. It keeps you a PATIENT. A cured client is no client at all.

I've just resigned to being on them for however long I have to because I don't want to go through feeling that terrible again. I used to take benzos and since they're a controlled substance and highly addictive in that I was often tempted to take more than I was supposed to, I got in a cycle of being short of medication and then going through withdrawal. At least with Effexor there's no temptation or reason to take more than one pill (for me because I am a recovering addict) and the doctors are happy to prescribe it.

Hi @@missEvaMarie58, I'm really sorry that you're living through this!!! Sadly, no. For me, instead of the symptoms easing off with time, they became increasingly worse. After 3 months I could not bear the emotional and physical pain anymore and decided to go back on the medication (Citalopram). I wish I could have come off the med but I've come to terms with the possibility that I may have to take it for the rest of my life (I may attempt to come off it again in future but aware that may not work out either). However, just because I didn't, doesn't mean it's not possible. Lots and lots of people have been able to and I hope that you are able to!!! However, I guess that I'm also an example of someone that has tried and wasn't able to come off and what life can look like after that great disappointment (I was absolutely heartbroken when I went back on the med): obviously I wish I could have, but I've come to terms with the fact that it didn't work out for me. I have continued to live a life with a full range of human emotions - I can see, taste and feel them all.

@@as582 I am so sorry to hear this. How are you doing now that you are back on it? I have been studying about detoxing from SSRI's. There are several you tubs videos about how to detox from them. You do need to suppliment with amino acids like GABA, glycine, taurine, tryptophan. You need extra magnesium, melatonin, vitamin c, L-Lysine, coenzyme Q10, omega 3, vitamin B's. A good multi vitamine (which I am still trying to find) And you need probiotics and digestive enzymes. Meditation and movement of your body. Did your doctor help you with these suppliments while you were weaning? Mine wasn't so I started doing the looking myself and am trying my best to heal myself. I pray that I am successful. Thank you so much@@missEvaMarie58 ☺️. To be honest I don't think my Dr knew how to handle my case ... she kept telling me she'd never seen anything like it. At one point she offered me valium and I'm so grateful I refused as you don't want to go from SSRIs to Benzodiazepines (another group of drugs that are a nightmare to come off). Once I went back on the med it took a few weeks to start to feel better. And now am doing fine. I have a normal life, full of all the things you'd expect. I'm grateful that during that horrid period in my life I was also having counselling, talking therapy didn't help with the physical pain, but it helped me mentally. Have you checked with your Dr that all the supplements you're taking are ok to take with your medication? I know I need to be careful with mine as there are a few things it's not compatible with. All the best, pls do keep i touch and I hope you're on the other side of this experience soon!!!

I took duloxetine for 2 years after diagnosis of fybromialgia and depression (every other desease has been cut off after many examinations). I was supposed to have this therapy for 6 months, as my original GP said. I am living abroad, and here only psychiatrists can prescribe such meds. Covid came and doctor suggested to keep duloxetine for more. Then, when I asked for suggestion regarding starting to decrease the dose, he made me go off 30 mg cold Turkey on December. I started to feel in a nightmare again with all the possible withdrawals, mentally and physically. Now I am starting a natural/homeopathic therapy prescribed by a valuable doctor in my city, who said that antidepressants and their being cut in a sudden put my body in a high acidosis, so I need to alcalinise it. I hope I will solve all of this.

So I had to abruptly stop my Lexapro because my husband lost his job. I was fine for about 5 days and then on the 6th day I started freaking out. I had a MAJOR melt down. I was crying, screaming, highly irritable, nauseous, and had a very strong urge to hurt myself. I felt like something had taken over my body. It was absolutely terrifying and scary. The only way to kind of calm myself was to walk. I walked and walked and walked. During my walk I was crying hysterically, and then I was fine. Then I would cry hysterically, and then I was fine. My husband had no idea how to handle it. I was so scared and was such a wreck that when I talked to my psychiatrist the next day I literally made her cry because she felt so bad for me. She gave me a 90 day supply and told me if I don't get my medical insurance back by the time the medication is up, that I should go to the emergency room and have them fill it. I'm terrified that I won't have insurance by then. Please say a prayer for me. I'm so incredibly scared that I'm going to not feel good anymore once my medication is out. I don't want to go back to hating myself and being easily irritated. I love my husband so so much, and I don't want this to ruin our marriage. I wish I was normal like everyone else, and I wish I didn't have to take medication to regulate my mood. I especially wish I could afford health care. It's a shame that people who work hard and pay their taxes have to suffer with mental illness because America is all about the money and big Pharma. I also wanted to mention that my sex drive went WAY HIGH for some reason. I haven't been able to get enough, and I constantly think about it 24/7 even while at work. I literally cannot keep my mind off of it. You may think this isn't really a problem, but it's difficult to concentrate on every day life and normal activities when that's all that I want. My husband doesn't have a problem helping me out with that issue but he is significantly older then me and sometimes needs a break, while I'm over here feening for it like a drug addict. I'm in hyper drive and need it to slow down a tad so I don't break my husband. It may sound like a humble brag, but trust me...it's not. Like I said he's getting older and sometimes our bedroom activities cause him back or leg issues. I'm hoping it won't kill my sex drive when I stop the medication. Taking anti depressants can be so tricky in many ways.

I became agitated (funny word for the anger I felt) and that was the only side effect I had. I almost hospitalized myself. My doctor worked with me and on the following Monday of starting a new med that gave me headaches, so that wasn't going to work out, I decided to take my vitamins later and noted zero Zoloft in my medicine box. Why I am sharing this is because that FINISH is black and white. I wanted to let people know that they may not fit into this nicely defined side effects. I was off my meds for one or two months, cold turkey (Zoloft). It was the scariest situation that I had ever been in. The worst is constant panic attacks that last about 2 weeks and very high blood pressure. It's like living in an absolute nightmare. Then, those symptoms ease only to come back in form of waves and windows. Stress is a trigger for a future wave of symptoms.

Broke my leg in half once. Looking back, I’d rather break my leg all over again than deal with these withdrawals. I was only on Zoloft for 6 weeks, and only 50 mg. I stopped abruptly when I lost my medicine on vacation, but I had the blessing of my psychiatrist. She never told me about symptoms I could face while on and getting off the medication. Getting on the meds isn’t an option because my symptoms were so debilitating on the meds too. I never felt mental relief and they made me sick the whole time. I’ve been off the meds for 3 weeks now.

this has happened to me a few times with Venlafaxine because my insurance wouldn't approve my refill until a certain date. Got "brain zaps" I'm not sure if I would really describe it as zaps but just kind of a head rush or dizziness that would happen when I blinked or moved my head. I was also very emotional and would cry at about anything or be easily irritated. I even got these effects after slowly going down on the dose and discontinuing after weaning off the lowest dose. I really don't like that part of antidepressants but after trying no medication I am restarting on new ones.

It took a loooong time to get a professional to admit, but those side effects you're describing are SEIZURES. The meds we take lower our seizure threshold and when we don't get our dose on time the seizures begin. This is SCARY. It's also why the doctor, nurse and pharmacist leave you in the dark about what is going on. If you KNEW, yyou wouldn't agree to their standard treatments. People are driving their children around experiencing these side effects! And those in the know are ALLOWING IT. The medical and pharmaceutical industries are immoral, unethical, and allowed to be operated for profit at the expense of humanity. I avoid western medicine at every opportunity and my NP and i have a very interesting relationship because of this.

Relapsed and got back on it in February and manage get back up to 100 mg this past month or so, but I haven’t been on them for about two weeks already. So far, I say slight nausea, imbalance and hyperarousal are what Im dealing with, but nothing I cant handle. I’m glad I decided to get off of this now so, the symptoms don’t seem to bad. My psychiatrist suddenly quit refilling my prescription without any head’s up. I have not been able to get any further correspondence and it is almost a week. I expressed in a prior appt that I had wanted to try and live without the meds. I have never felt this lousy. I describe my brain as having glitches if I change my thoughts too fast, or even move my eyes. I am ultra sensitive to light and sound, being startled by nearly every noise. I would not trust myself to drive a vehicle right now!!! I’m concerned about the mental health system in my community. Mentally, I am ok, but this worries me for other patients who might fall into a dark place, really fast, having been abruptly “cut off” this type of medication.

Long time Bupreion and Prozac user I could function but felt really controlled even silly at times. I asked my MD if and when I could stop taking them and was told I might be worse being off of them. I spent some time reading and watching videos on reducing the Bupreion (250 mg?). What I found that six weeks was the recommended time to reduce by mg's. I was taking two separate mg's that allowed me to reduce safely over nine weeks. I feel a lot better though I still take 40mg of Prozac, stopping it produced an easy to anger at times. Back on it and my mood is more relaxed. However I have a real problem sleeping. It's always been there but much more pronounced. I'm taking 15mg of meletonan which gives me four hours of sleep. I'm slowly getting better but I'm tired half way through my day.

I've had the worst headache I've experienced in a very long time, I've been sensitive to noises and smells, had nausea, dizziness and really weird dreams.
