I found this badly rusted and worn hand drill with mis-matched parts and thought it would be a fun vintage/antique tool to restore. Somehow I didn't realize until late in the restoration that it was missing a part (handle). I had to end up making the handle and threading the rod from scratch because I couldn't find a M9x1.25 threaded bolt or rod anywhere.

Excellent work saving a badly neglected old tool. Nice replacement handle and square head bolt.

A brilliant restoration, an absolutely cracking job. Going off the chuck it’s definitely an older model. My eggbeater has the modern 8mm chuck and my breast drill a 13mm one. Its amazing how useful these drills are. Yours looked brilliant after the restoration, you did a job to be proud of. This video makes me feel guilty, I have a Stanley Continental 748a that definitely needs tidying up a bit. I also have about 30 augers, a wooden Jack plane, a #78 plane, 3 spokeshaves, numerous gouges and V chisels that are on my 'to do' list. I should get off my lazy arse, stop watching restoration videos and get some work done. A great video, very well produced. Thank you for posting it.

In addition to missing the handle, I believe there should be a spring in the chuck jaws to keep them open until you tighten it down around a drill bit.

The replacement handle was my favorite part...being able to overcome a problem using good old fashioned hand work and know how, that's what a robot can't replace!

I want to say it’s a Miller’s Falls, but then again it also looks like a Goddell and Pratt too. Either way, good job.

It's weird to think that we see this and think "Wow, I can't believe that's the way they used to do it," yet when these drills were the best their owners thought of older things and said, "Wow I can't believe that's the way they used to do it." All the way back to the first drilling tool, where that person probably just thought, "THIS IS AMAZING!" Lol.

Never underestimate the need for a non-powered drill out in the forest. Your lithium batteries only last so long where Manpower goes on forever.

Nicely done. I believe that drill is a Millers Falls No 19 and in case you'd like to see the original look go check "oldtoolheaven.com". Btw, what is the solution you used in order to remove the zinc coating ?

Good Job. That drill must be a British or European type because of the metric threads..
@markharris5771
@markharris5771 5 жыл бұрын
olenick 7734 I’m thinking because of the auger chuck more probably European, I have an early 70s 748a which has a 1/2 inch (13mm) chuck. We didn’t start adopting the metric threads until after I left school in 76, I don’t know exactly when but we used imperial BSW in metalwork class. Putting these facts together, and in all probability getting it wrong, I’d say this drill is from the 60s or older when we were still using imperial.
