Antique "Ernst Leitz" Microscope Restoration - Shiny Brass Polishing
In this video i made a restoration of an antique microscope, made by "Ernst Leitz" in the german city Wetzlar. I bought this antique microscope online from a private guy. When i received the microscope, i could see a lot of tarnished brass, rusted metal and damaged paint. The function of this microscope was still given but the lenses were dirty. Time to restore this old beauty. I started by taking off the brass desk from the main microscope. On the desk were a mounted brass mirror, a brass light mechanism for setting the microscopes brightness and some other brass parts. All the parts were tarnished and mounted with lots of small screws. To get them out, i had to remove a lot of patina from the brass parts. After that i disassembled the main body of the antique microscope, which was, besides of many lenses, nearly fully made of brass. These parts were also tarnished and full of patina. The Steel parts were rusted, but the disassembly of these rusted parts were easy. This was the easy part of the restoration of this microscope. I started the restoration with repairing two parts: the shaft for the microscopes height adjustment was bent, and i ripped off a brass screw, which was still stuck in the full brass desk. Another part of the microscope restoration was lathe work: i cleaned and repaired some parts on the lathe. After fixing this, i could go on with restoring the other brass parts. I cleaned them off cam and gave them a nice brass polishing for new golden shine. The steel parts were sandblasted in the sandblasting cabinet and painted in the original black color. The restoration was nearly done, i just had to reassemble all the parts. After reassemnbly, the antique brass microscope got its old shine back and looks brand new. This restoration was a lot of fun!

I love the instruments from this era. Handcrafted, mostly brass, combined with a special black lacquer. They all have a similar typical style. For me they are cultural assets and I think saving them is an expression of appreciation towards the clever and hardworking people who once designed and built them. Fortunately the corrosion of the brass parts was only superficial and could be polished out, at first I would not have believed it. I was also curious what you would do with the optics, the lenses. You would have to have appropriate mechanical equipment and also proper polishes to restore the optical assemblies and the blinded lenses. Last but not least, thank you for beautiful, sharp macro shots, you are getting better and better :-)

Hey Georg, thank you so much for your lovely comment! I agree, sometimes while restoring these thing you think about what have these things seen, heard, how many hands were on them, its just fascinating. So iam always pretty respectful while restoring them. I got a ultrasonic cleaner yesterday, for cleaning the lenses or other small parts! Thank you so much!

Maybe slightly overstating it, especially since the microscope could not have been cheap to buy, but you had some balls taking that apart. I would have ruined it just taking it apart, never mind restoring it and putting it back together. Awesome job, sir!

Hey B, thank you so much! When i started with disassembling, i was like "oh yeah, goes well", but when i more tiny screws behind a lot of tiny more screws, i really had to focus on this one. Especially the full brass parts with their soft threads and surfaces. Thank you so much, iam glad you enjoyed!

Absolutely beautiful . Glad you were able to save the old thing. We just don't make beautiful things anymore. Aluminum and cheap plastic is all we get. Just mass marketed junk that falls apart quickly so you have to repurchase over and over again.

WOW! Fantastic! This is a piece of history. You made Ernst proud Mr P.!! That thing is gorgeous and deserves a prominent place in the house. Great work on the brass and painted areas both. Love the finish on the paint, just the right amount of luster. The close-ups are outstanding, you must have paid a small fortune for your camera. Wonderful restoration!!!

So many channels that claim to be ASMR should watch this! The whistle made me laugh though, I think it’s because I wasn’t expecting it. I really enjoy it when people like yourself, my mechanics, RepairMan and LABD restore things that are different from everyone else. Then you do them to an higher standard and with a better video production too. A thoroughly enjoyable video, thank you.

The microscope looks great but it is missing the two clips, on the deck to hold the specimen in place. Should be two flat springs that press against the deck, to hold the specimen slide to the deck. Other wise looks great.

I see allot of times where tools get polished to a mirror finish. I always think "Wow! That looks great. Now I don't want to use this." With this one though, the whole idea it to be polished and clean. This is totally functional and is still relevant. Probably my favorite on this channel.

Frankfurter Gruss.

Greetings from St. Petersburg! Hello buddy! I watched this video only now because for some reason it was in the viewed one. But here's what I want to say. I loved the whole video as always. But most of all I liked the fact that you did not try to bring the microscope to a new state - "like from a factory." It was really cool. The result is a laboratory assistant's tool - a fanatic who loves his job. Great result. 👌 Спасибо за красивую работу!

For straightening a small bent shaft like that, my preference is to use a flat surface of either granite or steel and then just roll up the high side and place it on a flat hardwood like Oak or Birch and tap with a brass hammer. It does look really good.

Very nice work M.P... Now get some bottled water and put a drop on a slide and look at all the bacteria (thru your microscope) in the water.. Now purchase a water distillation unit that makes 2-3 gallons a day.. That is my gift to you my friend and thank you for your gift to all of us thru ❤ your videos.

@@misterpatina my mother did that when she worked at the hospital as a Lab Technician.. Her and a co-worker looked at some bottled water that they were drinking.. She said it was loaded with bacteria.. that was probably 30 yrs ago and probably worse nowadays... You keep making those videos and I'll keep watching them...lol.. thx again...

Beautiful restoration of an old classic medical device. In its heyday I am sure that the owner prized it greatly. All that brass work must have been very delicate to work on, but you pulled it off nicely. Thanks for sharing this video with us and please keep strong, mask-up and stay healthy. Texas is watching.

Honestly, just getting the dirt out of the screw slots was an improvement. Restoration was outstanding. Read your current post a little while ago about Junior Patina arriving soon. Congratulations to you and especially Mrs. Patina!
