After a month of bad winter weather I was able to get out to the range with my antique Remington New Model Navy Cartridge Conversion Revolver, made in the 1870s.
I’ll give you a little of the history of the NMN revolver, and we’ll do some shooting.
This revolver is chambered in .38 Long Colt, and I’ll be shooting it on paper with a variety of black powder ammunition.

I knew a guy who worked in navy supply for submarines years ago who told me stories. One was when they desperately wanted to replace the old coffee maker but the commanding officer wouldn't sign off on it. Eventually the guy got creative on the forms calling it a "water filtration and percolation unit". What do you know, it got approved!

Was at a local gun shop a few days ago and they had Remington UMC 115g fmj 9mm in stock, 50rd boxes. They wanted $115 per freaking box, I like to shit myself lol. And unfortunately if you wanna shoot, we'll pay whatever the asking price. Picked up my hellcat osp for less than 300 rounds of ammo is going for smh.

Maybe it is just the Remington originals I have seen but the guns I have saw are always in much better condition than Colt revolvers to include cartridge conversions from the same time period. A friend of mine in the early 70's who was about 88 when he past away in 1985 owned several original Remington' and colts. He had two Remington 44 cal cap n ball and a 38cal Remington cartridge conversion that looks like reproductions they were in such good shape. Too bad Uberti didn';t do a better job coping the Remington cartridge conversion to be a closer copy.

I would think the big change was getting rid of the percussion cap. Half the flame goes out the side of the nipple, Only a small area of the primer over the nipple hole goes into the powder. The nipple end can be damaged by the hammer strike deforming it over time. The cartridge flame cannot escape and must all go into the the powder charge.

In my opinion This is one of the best videos of yours, this gun is great authentic/ original and no matter how many conversion videos including the historical education you make about that certain era , I just can’t have enough of them, I hope you can come up with also an original/authentic 38 or 44 caliber 5,5” barrels of 51 and 61 colt navy and army models , wether old ones or not does not matter really , I know it must be extremely difficult to find original pieces like these, I was also expecting to see the cylinder swap you showed in one of your previous videos like Clint Eastwood did in “Pale rider” ; would like to know how it would work in this though :), Also just my opinion to say if you may, make comparison shooting and explanation videos with the new ones and the authentic ones, like to hear your comparisons for having sights on or off or shooting straight , heavy or light etc. We can’t get our hands on such pieces anyway, your videos are as far as we can get and learn to feeling them and those times, thank you again,! Was Great video to say again, much obliged...

My first cap and ball revolver is an ASM(Euroarms) NMN. I believe it is on a smaller frame than the NMA although the bore circle of the cylinder is almost identical on both. Uberti and Pietta have similar bore circles but the length of the cylinders vary. I really need a bigger sample size to confirm the variations. Time to take them out and see how they are shooting before it gets too dry and the fire danger raises.

It was great to see a new video from you Mike. It seems like the weather out there has been tough so it may have been difficult for you to get out and shoot. Thanks for the history to go along with the revolver. I don't worry about the accuracy of these guns too much. I just like that they shoot safely and can put all the rounds on a man sized target. That's all that really matters. Thanks for posting and sharing a great piece of history with us. Stay warm brother.

Always interesting how many of these old guns shoot "high" by our standards, not to point of aim. Personally I am convinced that was deliberate. It was intended that you aim at his belly button or belt buckle, or possibly even his knees.

I had R&D Gun shop convert a Remmy 36 cal for me, back in the 1990s, when I was into the Cowboy Action thing. Full up conversion AND nickel plated! Also, I had them leave the barrel at .375 (Because I am a tard or just a purist). I don't think I've fired the revolver since 1997. I have a box of BP hand loads, packed somewhere, done about that time, using a Lee Hollow based bullet. I also have an NEI mould for a .375 heel bullet with a single grease groove, that I am looking forward to using again, now that I have the 39 LC heel bullet crimp die. I may try Eras Gone's .36 bullet, too. I also have another .36 cal Rem with an R&D conversion cylinder and three percussion cylinders...again...ALL nickeled, set into a case that I made up.

Revisiting this video on 3-19-2023. I was using a .357 HBFN in my 1851 Uberti that I converted to .F38 LC that shot very well. I put a new front sight on that made it very accurate. Unfortunately I ran out of the bullets and no longer trust the seller to buy more because the last box were not made from pure lead and the hollow base does not expand. I have the 1851 Colt conversion and a Remington Navy percussion with coversion cylinder that need a pure lead hollow base bullet. Do you know how I could get some to use for reloading ? They were 150 gr. HBFN of pure lead. Any other suggestions?

I bet the designer of this cartridge coversion pistol was right-handed, because the fiddly bit of pushing the cartridges into the chambers must be done with the righ hand, while held in the left with the grip of the pistol facing the shooter's hand (so it would be quick to load a few and then fire them at a neaby threat). If you tried to do this eft-handed (held in the right, loaded by the left), then the loading gate would be under the pistol and inaccessable, if the grip of the pistol is pointing towards the shooter's dominant hand and ready for threats.
