Uberti's New Army & Navy Cartridge Conversion Revolver How Historically correct is it?

In today’s video I’ll compare Uberti’s New Model Army/Navy Remington Cartridge Conversion revolver to an actual Remington cartridge conversion revolver to see how historically correct the Uberti-made revolver actually is.

I have always found it odd that manufactures go to such lengths to make a replica but often miss out important parts of the original design.

Good show Mike! I worked at Navy Arms Company from 1978 to 1987 and I think I can provide some insight as to the variations and deviations on replica firearms from the originals. There were a number of NAC folks on hand who were there from the beginning including Val Forgett and the story is this: When replica firearms were beginning to be produced (1959 - 1960) there was a bit of controversy involved, basically critisism from collectors who were concerned about the replicas being used to fake original guns, especially the Colts. So, the decision was made to deviate in the configurations of the replicas to make faking more difficult, that is if you knew what you were looking at you wouldn't be fooled. Look at a replica 1851 Navy for example and you say "Oh, it's an 1851 Navy!" But put it alongside an original and you can spot the differences right away. I may be assuming too much but I'm going to assume Uberti is following the same policy today. Uberti was always a responsible and class act. So I'd guess those deviations from the originals on the cartridge conversion Remingtons are there purposely, not because Uberti got lazy or sloppy but to make faking more difficult. The fakers can be pretty damn clever as it is! Anyway, I though everyone might find this interesting.

@@chpet1655 You're welcome! And what I said about deviations applies not only to the 19th Century revolvers but also 99% of replicas of antique firearms. There have been custom jobs which are the exceptions but they're few and far between.

Enjoyed the video. I have all 3 Remington replica models, Army, Navy, and the Pocket model and have conversion cylinders for all 3. Watching your video near the end, you show a pic of the original with the loading gate tab. The tab looks to be screwed into the gate. Would it be possible to aquire the tab from the ejection rod on the replica and have a gunsmith drill, and tap the gate to accommodate it.
@duelist1954
@duelist1954 9 ай бұрын
On the original the loading gate tab is attached with a screw in the body of the loading gate. That screw works as a hinge, making iy easier for the ball on the gate lever to engage the detent that holds the gate closed.

Beautiful piece! I only shoot .45 Colt cowboy loads from my Uberti 1858 new model army revolver using my Howell .45 Colt drop in conversion cylinder. I bought my piece a year ago just to shoot cowboy loads and bought the cylinder for it at the same time for that purpose to stay off the grid plus I live in MA. and don’t have the unconstitutional state gun permit and don’t want it. I was able to get the piece and the cylinder shipped to my address in MA. and I buy my cowboy loads over the counter in NH. and I go to a spot in NH. near the MA. and VT. borders where I shoot for free and I have a video posted on my channel of my most recent shooting session where I shot up an 8 inch terra cotta flower pot from about 30 feet away with my piece

Very informative video on cartridge conversions! Going back to the original cap and ball configuration, where cylinder swap reloads ever a thing, or was that just Hollywood? I think Clint Eastwood can be credited for most revolver sales of any actor. I've got a pair of the "navy" conversions with 5.5" barrels. I've had them for a year, and I've been using them for SASS matches and they have been excellent performers. I've modified then slightly to my tastes. First I had half of the rebated rim removed so as to easily show a safe condition at the load and unload tables, I removed the ball rammer so it wouldn't keep falling into the cylinders if I left the lever down to unload. Then I removed the ejector rod for convenience as well as the very thing you mentioned about them unscrewing. I keep it in my belt for unloading so I don't have to drop the lever. They work for me this way, and with the new insane firearms laws in Canada at this time likely these are the last handguns I'll be able to purchase.

Personally,...if i had something like that like the ejector rod keep coming undone,..i may just drill a small hole where the two pieces meet,..put in a tiny spot of weld,..grind it flush and reblue the rod in the knowledge that thing ain't ever going to come undone again !! Also,..i may possibly even make a thumb latch for the loading gate and again,..if it's welded in a way as to not look unsightly and the whole thing reblued,..it'd go some way to make the weapon look a bit more authentic. Once again though,....another great video Mike.

I wonder what the extra cost of adding the gate latch and different recoil shield would be. Would this put the pistol in a price range above what most people would be willing to spend. However, if Uberti or another company offered the parts, how many would purchase them and what would be the cost.

I'm not an industrial engineer . But off the top of my head - In full production . the difference in production cost would be small . But since this will probably be a low volume seller , the R&D and tooling costs up front would be an issue . Thereby the more you can use existing parts , the better .
