The NDR Symphony Orchestra (todas's NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchester) and his then Honorary Conductor Günter Wand perform Bruckner's Symphony No 3 on the anniversary of German Reunification 1992.

Anton Bruckner, Gunter Wand and The NRD Hamburg performing in Berlin the composer who loved and admired Wagner and was dedicated this beautiful symphony. It's amazing the power, the energy, control, and understanding that maestro Gunter got at his age. Terrific.

Finally, a conductor who makes it so much easier for the Konzertmeister. Clear, precise and no nightmarish entrances. (as opposed to Bernstein for example)

The great feature of maestro Wand conducting was that he measured time quite strictly. The tempo is so well-judged and balanced, they cared about the performance being accurately timed.

Here I am, listening to this performance of incredible cohesion and momentum and assurance and lo and behold it's Lee the wandering minstrel who got here two years before me. Luckily the watering hole is still full here.

@@OuterGalaxyLounge Hey, I'm old but I get around. Wand was great for the more formal approach to Bruckner and the NDR was fully on board with him in this era.

@@leestamm3187 I agree. I have the RCA/BMG Cologne complete set with him on CD which is a great bargain. I guess you have notifications enabled for replies, but I don't, so if I ever check back for replies it's either because I remembered or it is just by accident. Collecting all the different Wand/Bruckner cycles including all the concert ones, some of which are on KZfaq is quite the challenge.

Meisterhaft Günter Wand!!! Die demütige Geste am Ende des Finales einfach überwältigend. Das strahlende Hauptthema der Blechbläser am Ende gehört eigentlich gar nicht zu den drei Hauptthemen des Finalsatzes, aber Bruckner stellt wie immer meisterhaft eine Verbindung zwischen allen Bestandteilen des Werkes her.

Wunderschöne Aufführung dieses großartigen Meisterwerks mit gut harmonisierten und perfekt synchronisierten Töne aller Instrumente. Der erfahrene Maestro dirigiert das perfekt trainierte Orchester im angemessenen Tempo mit angenehmer Dynamik ohne überflüssige Agogik. Echt hörenswert!

Das grandiose und überwältigende Finale dieser wunderschönen Symphonie drückt den Aufstieg der Seele aus, die sich im Moment des Todes vom irdischen Körper löst und sich in einem Glanz der Schönheit mit der himmlischen Herrlichkeit wiedervereint, es ist die Rückkehr in das Haus des Vaters. ....hier wird dirigiert, nicht interpretatorisch vor dem Orchester getanzt. Günter Wand war einer der größten seiner Zunft, jeder Effekthascherei fremd. PR wurde nicht für ihn erfunden. Mi piace moltissimo

Thanks for your upload. Would have preferred if he had conducted the original version. The later versions were so watered down, it's almost like a different symphony.

I think so many times at Wand and his Beethoven cycle, that even the 5th and 7th symphony is not published at YT - it´s a pitty.

Bruckner's symphonies are inspirational , graceful and comfortable to the ear and the mind Without Bruckner and his great performers such as these performers and great conductor , the classical music world would have been very lonely and insipid From Tokyo of the Land of the Rising Sun 🇯🇵

Das Konzert fand im Konzerthaus (ehem. Schauspielhaus) am Gendarmenmarkt in Berlin zum Tag der Deutschen Einheit 1992 statt.

Hab (als Hambirger) Günter Wand mit dem NDR Orchester unzählige Male in der Hamburger Musikhalle erleben dürfen. Wie auch immer - ich mag diesen Mitschnitt sehr.... SOGAR die Bildregie! nochmals Danke und viele Grüße!

@@alexgoretzki Bitte, gern geschehen! - Von der Akustik her ist es übrigens nicht unbedingt Berlins bester Konzertsaal - ganz im Gegenteil, obwohl das in diesem Mitschnitt gar nicht so rüberkommt. Dafür sieht er ganz nett aus und erinnert ein wenig an den Wiener Musikvereinssaal.

@@alexgoretzki Eigentlich kann man hier nichts nach Beethoven aufführen. Größere Orchester sprengen die Akustik des Saals, egal, wo man sitzt. Ich meide das Haus genau aus diesem Grund, da all meine Lieblingswerke und -komponisten hier nicht funktionieren.

Watching older concert videos like this makes me glad that in the modern age there are fewer old white men on the podium and more of the younger generation, both men and women. Also orchestras have far more women these days, thank goodness.

It definitely is a win to have old and young, man and women on the podium. In the orchestras, as conductors - anywhere. No doubt about it. We certainly don't mind white old men though, if they have so much to offer as Günter Wand had. :))) Cuts both ways.
