Don’t really know anything about music, other than my love for it. I can’t even begin to fathom how a person can create something so beautiful just with marks on a page. I imagine it must require such a knowledge and deep understanding of the inner mechanisms of music. Not to mention the depths of emotion he must’ve accessed to create something so stirring. And that is just creating it. The actual performing is a whole other thing, that is no less impressive. Ahh I’m so grateful for classical music and Tchaikovsky. It’s so beautiful.

I love the passion of this concert! So many conductors almost seem apologetic about playing Tchaikovsky, as if he needs to be toned down or something. I say if you’re going to do Tchaikovsky, do it with gusto! That second movement is sublime. The horn solo is played with such sensitivity and he really lets it just ooze out and the aching notes speak for themselves.

The 5th was the first concert (of any kind) I ever went to. In London in about 1983, the Halle orchestra I think. My Grandad was the big classical music aficionado in our family and made me a cassette of this symphony, and the 6th. Even though I didn't really 'get' the concert the first time, it was a bit too overwhelming, I did listen to the tape and got into it on the 3rd or 4th listen. It's now one of my favourite pieces of classical music.

@@ludo4961 I tend to agree, though Russian music is in the DNA of Yuri Temirkanov and the St. Petersburg Philharmonic to such an extent that to my ears few achieve what they can and do. Bernstein delivers a fine interpretation, but, again to my ear, misses what the Russians call 'iziuminka', the French a 'je ne sais quoi' that raises the hairs on the back of one's neck and elevates the performance beyond even the extraordinary. Claudio Abbado pushes the envelope like no other non-Russian. Now, I would be foolish to insist that Messrs Abbado and Temirkanov have a monopoly on interpreting this work. Isn't it of paramount importance that whoever's conducting whichever orchestra give the listener a transcendent(al) experience? I think so and am grateful that this KZfaq video brings such pleasure to listener-viewers.

me too - when I was growing up we had a 'World Records Club' LP. (well, we had a huge set of them - my dad had done a stint as one of their salesment in his youth) I don't remember who the orchestra or conducter were, but that was my intro to Tchaikovsky. I have never been able to find a recording since that so captured the lyrical dance at moments. Also, I am a little disappointed that this recording sublimates much of the very important underground rhythm that throbs along in the background. To me, those two aspects of this symphony are what really raise it to such a sublime level - in this recording (and many others) you have to listen hard to catch them.

People complain (rightfully) about conductors who wave their hands needlessly as if dancing... with Maestro Honeck I don't think this is the case. Everything he does seems to be calculated to have an effect on the sound (or some other aspect of the performance) without any unnecessary movements. This to me is the sign of a truly great conductor. I also love the elegance and grace with which he addresses the audience and musicians before, during and after the concert. Incredible

Someone in the comments said they thought the horn solo in the second movement was bad. I have to disagree! I think it was superbly done. The tempo is quite slow and he really carried the phrase and gave it motion, one of the hardest things to do. I have played this piece many times and I think all of the woodwind playing was first rate, which is to be expected from this orchestra.

This symphony is a wonderful example of how a master of composition can create greatness out of the mundane. I'm talking about the theme on which the whole work is based - it's really a rather trite series of notes, but Tchaikovsky transforms it into something magical.

This is one of my all-time favorite pieces of all (heck, it is my favorite piece, tied with Schumann's 4th) - that overwhelming sense of melancholy throughout the piece, fused with the happier parts...my, it's been nearly 7 years since I played it (the second violin part), but there are parts of it that still give me chills.
