Same here but the CD sounds better than this KZfaq stream. What makes this interpretation magical is how Hogwood manages not to sound like a music box while playing at the right tempo and Bowman's extraordinary combination of force and mellow in his voice.

Bowman was the first countertenor I came to know and love. His diction is flawless. Very ecclesiastical sound. Some later countertenors are more dramatic very agile and have a higher tessitura: fantastic. There is so much repertoire - plenty of room for all. I have a very soft spot for this type of voice. Powerful and sweet, gender fluid.

@@Immortal__ I am with Humpty Dumpty on words A word means exactly what I mean it to mean: nothing more, nothing less. I find hipster terms for counter tenor useful. They are after all not castrati. The voice for Farinelli was a mix of Derek Lee Ragin and Ewa Malas- Godlewska. The only castrato I have heard is Moreschi who sounded dreadful. He was old and probably was never better than mediocre.. Not nearly as feminine as Ragin or Yoshikazu Mera. Derek doesn't look feminine, Mera does. But both can be mistaken for women from their audio. My 3 adjectives work for these plus Scholl, Jarousski..Stutzmann and Fassbaender for that matter.. may

@@Immortal__ I agree with your sentiment. "gender fluid." Its not "hipster" per se, but an egregious infiltration into our social and political realm of these demonic phrases giving off an illusion of somehow being legitimately accepted by the majority of people. It isn't and never will. The purpose of these communistic, "socially engineered" phrases is to sow corruption by introducing a perversion of otherwise healthy and stable gender archetypes that otherwise make up a rational human being whose psyche is in right order with God our Creator... We observe such clap trap particularly in what passes today for "universities" and colleges...its goal is to confuse and destroy God's creation of boy/girl; man/woman in order to sow destabilization and mass psychosis. Utter and complete abomination! We must reject all these perverted attempts in our social and political realm.

Stabat Mater for solo alto and orchestra, RV 621, is a composition by the Italian baroque composer Antonio Vivaldi on one of the Sorrows of Mary. It was premiered in Brescia in 1712. Lyrics: At the Cross her station keeping, stood the mournful Mother weeping, close to her Son to the last. Through her heart, His sorrow sharing, all His bitter anguish bearing, now at length the sword has passed. O how sad and sore distressed was that Mother, highly blest, of the sole-begotten One. Christ above in torment hangs, she beneath beholds the pangs of her dying glorious Son. Is there one who would not weep, whelmed in miseries so deep, Christ’s dear Mother to behold? Can the human heart refrain from partaking in her pain, in that Mother’s pain untold? Bruis’d, derided, curs’d, defiled, She beheld her tender child All with bloody scourges rent. For the love of His own nation, Saw Him hang in desolation, Till His spirit forth He sent. O thou Mother! fount of love! Touch my spirit from above, make my heart with thine accord: Make me feel as thou hast felt; make my soul to glow and melt with the love of Christ my Lord. Holy Mother! pierce me through, in my heart each wound renew of my Savior crucified: Let me share with thee His pain, who for all my sins was slain, who for me in torments died. Let me mingle tears with thee, mourning Him who mourned for me, all the days that I may live: By the Cross with thee to stay, there with thee to weep and pray, is all I ask of thee to give. Virgin of all virgins blest!, Listen to my fond request: let me share thy grief divine; Let me, to my latest breath, in my body bear the death of that dying Son of thine. Wounded with His every wound, steep my soul till it hath swooned, in His very Blood away; Be to me, O Virgin, nigh, lest in flames I burn and die, in His awful Judgment Day. Christ, when Thou shalt call me hence, be Thy Mother my defense, be Thy Cross my victory; While my body here decays, may my soul Thy goodness praise, Safe in Paradise with Thee. www.classical-music.com/features/articles/stabat-mater-lyrics/

Well, this recording has some points in his favour. But... I had a audiocassette of this work sung by Shirley Verret. It was really amazing. Maybe this music was written for a female voice, and not for a contro tenore or for a castrato. (Vivaldi,as it is well known, worked for 'the Ospedaletto', an institution for orphaned or illegitimate girls, so he could avail himself of an army of female voices. It is true, however, that the Stabat Mater was probably commissioned by a religious institution of Brescia, the Chiesa di Santa Maria della Pace, so far as I know). Anyway, even though Hogwood probably conducts better than Renato Fasano, the voice of Shirley Verret was really touching, for her interpretation and for her outstanding timbre. How to describe it.. ? a metaphor: light of old gold ! Unfortunately that legendary recording (I Virtuosi di Roma, Renato Fasano cond., Shirley Verret) is now unobtainable.
