The original video by AviaBarsov Flying School is available here: • Запуск AH-2 Сургут www... . I just added English subtitles to help my non-Russian friends flying on SibWings An-2 easily learn engine start-up and heating procedures from a real pilot.
By default the subtitles are on. If you still can't see them, click on "CC" (captions) icon to activate.

That guy knows his stuff! When you can start a cold radial in 10 seconds flat, then you know your machine with your eyes closed. An earlier commenter was right, I would fly with that guy in a bucket of loose bolts!

I've watched vids of pilots starting everything from a 2 place Cessna to 787's, but there is nothing as awesome as watching somebody who knows his stuff starting an AN-2. Maybe I'm strange but I think that plane has a definite measure of sexy

Flew this airplanes in Colombia, in the 90's The starter was a heavy disc connected to an electrical motor, after 22 second of rotation a clutch was pushed to engage the disk to the engine , that's how this engine was started, also remember the brakes were air brakes like the ones on busses or trucks, the black lever on the left side and in front of the of the joke ''pilot side'' is the brake, like a motorcycle, both pedals centered; brake action is even, push on pedal more than the other and breaking action will go to that side. almost a ton in cargo, 12 passengers, a black box on the tail section hanging on 4 wires nothing electrical to it was only a set of needles on top of a piece of white metal, in case of a crash the needles will scratch the metal and that will give some ideas to the investigators, all this enclosed in a 6inch by 6 inch box...just hanging there. Also remember a central port under the plane with some switches and a hose, you placed a 55 gallon drum with fuel right there and the hose and pump will put the gas on the top tanks ,right or left!! fun plane to fly, reached 60 knots and up like a rocket have to push forward column to keep safe speed. hey I was 20 or 21 and flew this for 100 hours as a copilot!! can't remember much!!

Aaaah, that noise when the engine idles. Such a lovely plane...or is it a tractor!? They even included the winding up of the rubber bands by turning the prop. Some of the Russian pilots we had would turn the prop using the electrical flywheel. First time we asked him how many blades he wanted us to turn the prop he looked at us funnily and just waved us away...

Far more involved start up and shut down procedure in comparison with today's "modern" small aircraft, however the processes are perfectly logical, and one suspects that if we followed a similar stringent routine our engines would like us very much more :-)

An Antonov An-2 that starts on the first Attempt? Video must be fake :D
@marzsit9833
@marzsit9833 Жыл бұрын
it started on the first attempt because the ground crew turned the prop by hand while the pilot manually injected fuel into the cylinders using the priming pump. if you don't inject fuel while the engine is being hand-propped then yes, several attempts are needed to get it going.

Because the left gauge thermocouple is on the 9th cylinder :)
@Tibb91
@Tibb91 7 жыл бұрын
So I guess if it's any cylinder other than the 9th, he won't know which one? Also which is the 9th one (viewed from front)?
@parapotamus
@parapotamus 7 жыл бұрын
The right gauge measures the 1st cylinder temperature, so it's not exactly "any other than the 9th". Actually I think the instructor knows this particular aircraft well enough to know what is broken there even without looking at the gauges. The 1st cylinder is the upper one, the 9th is next to it clockwise (viewing from the front).

Where is he seeing that the number 9 cylinder isn’t firing? I’m not recognizing such engine monitoring gauges.
@ptyzix
@ptyzix 4 жыл бұрын
I don't know for sure but I can make an educated guess. It seems like one of the cylinder head temperature gauges is not heating up. It's probably situated in the 9'th cylinder so the pilot concludes that cylinder #9 isn't firing.
@Bata.andrei
@Bata.andrei 2 жыл бұрын
There is a separate exhaus temperature gauge for the bottom (no.9) cylinder. Usually when the engine sits for long periods, oil will accumulate in the bottom cylinders and will foul the spark plugs. Before the engine start the prop is turned by hand a few times to ensure that the cylinders are cleared of any oil that could be accumulated. After the engine start, the pilot will run the engine to operating temperature, keeping an eye on the EGT gauges to make sure the spark plugs are firing and all the cylinders operate. If the exhaust temp of the bottom cylinders don't rise, then the engine needs to be shut of and the problem investigated.
