Andrew Kiest with the Mid America Flight Museum gives us a detailed walkaround tour of the Antanov AN-2 Biplane. This is one very unique airplane as Andrew explains about the aircraft's capabilities.

This is one of the most " fit for purpose" aircraft designs as evidenced by its long service life.

yeah, I've heard things about them. Guys I work with. We fly in beavers and otters- but they can't do AN-2's in Canada/US for commercial. But you hear about 'em overseas for bush jobs. I'd love to fly in one. And now they have a composite, turbine redesign I just found today- that's a a hell of a plane. but costs 10X as much as one of the old, ridiculously cheap radials.

Love the An-2. Also the modern turboprops. Amazing that it has been around since 1947!

Interesting the way it can drift down like a parachute with the slats all the way out (you can see them moving around behind him on the upper wing). And one of the signatures is Viktor Belenko, the pilot who defected by flying his mig-25 to japan.

I find odd that he seems to need to point out the 'Russian' bits about this aircraft. It is indeed one of the classic workhorses of the early aircraft. Really no need to 'apologize' about its nature. Great minds devise great solutions.

Wonderful aircraft. Would be perfect for short-haul, rough field operation in Alaska / Hawaii & mainland, if FAA not blocking commercial certification, to protect domestic manufacturers....So, $ 50K for an AN-2, or $ 1.7M for Cessna Caravan. Would love to see a video of AN-2 with reversible prop doing STOL demo. Perfect personal flying RV, especially on floats.... Spare engines available ?

Crosswind shouldn't be much of an issue if you're landing at 35 knots. You can probably land across the runway and still brake in time... :D

I believe the artificial horizon works differently than common Western ADI. I believe the blue "sky" and brown "ground" are stationary while the "airplane" pitches and rolls.
@paulhorn26658 жыл бұрын
Thats true! There was a horrible crash once in Russia. In a crisis situation, the russian pilot on a western plane, automatically fell back to basic flying school memories and crashed the plane, because of this difference!

This colors of USSR's An-2 ("Kukuruznik")-is not reliable. Red color of canopy -wrong, АЭРОФЛОТ -on the fuselage it shoul be black. Bottom of the fuselage -grey, not blue.I saw many An-2s in the USSR 80s.
@Prestomeco2025 жыл бұрын
I got to be a part of a crew that flew an AN-2 from New Jersey to Lakeland Florida for an airshow was very impressed at its design and capabilities. It is slow and noisy but still an amazing machine. In many ways, it is built more like a piece of agricultural equipment than an airplane. But what may appear to be a crude design is, for the most part, brilliantly simple and rugged. For example, the air brakes avoid the need for easily contaminated brake fluid that would freeze solid in a Russian winter. And the bungee leading edge STOL cuffs are pulled out by air air flow when the angle of attack goes above a certain value and are retracted automatically by bungee cords when the nose goes down.

@TheJustinJ10 ай бұрын
There is something known as "speed ratio" in aeronautical design, and anything approaching 4:1 maximum speed to minimum speed is very good indeed. An aircraft that can touch 100kts and land at 25-30kts is akin to a cessna 172 that can exceed 190ktas with a 48kt stall speed.
