Scott Glover with the Mid America Flight Museum was nice enough to give us a walkaround of this very historic C-41. This plane was flown by General Hap Arnold as his personal transport plane. To think of the stories this plane could tell if it could talk would be amazing.

Wish some dedicated guys would get together and start re manufacture of this beautiful craft. I road one some years ago, it has unique spirit. Some people really do appreciate quality. Thank You for walk-around.

Super good plane. There were 2 of these out at Springfield Regional when I was taking lessons there. We used to go down and walk around them and dream of flying one. Seeing the little puddles under the engines brought back memories of the smell of av-gas and oil. Good times.

Something you may not know about DC-3's, they were designed with external attachment points on the belly so they can carry their own completely assembled propeller. The P&W 1830 engine will also fit inside the aircraft's cabin. This doesn't seem like a big deal, but it was a first in its class, and it meant a lot to the operators that flew them. Also the Wright 1820 was about the same horsepower as the Pratt & Whitney 1830 engine, but the wright single row radial engine was about a 150 pounds lighter than the P&W, so the performance was a little better. I maintained a DC-3 in Alaska for 13 years, the airframe is more reliable than any modern turbine engine machine, the 50 year old engines were the only weak link in the machine.

Decent weight difference between the two! Was there much of a TBO lifespan difference on them?

@@davecrupel2817 Never worked on the Wright 1820 engine, but they were very prolific in WW2, probably not much difference in lifespan

Fortunate enough to be aboard this bird for a flight while it was hangered at kcgi, alongside another dc-3. If I recall correctly, the army air corps plate was still in place

great to see!! I was in the airplane back in the 80's when Otis Spunkmeyer owned it, at the time they were just restoring it, the interior didn't have the seats yet, great to see how it ended up.

In '98 I took a brief flight, about 45 minutes in this very aircraft. We flew around the SF bay. I used to work across the street from the Hangar where it was serviced. The last time I saw it was there was in 2014.

Thanks for all the unique information. I don't do it on purpose, but some of the things you mentioned I'll remember the rest of my life. I'm no pilot, but just maybe I'll have that opportunity. I'm working on it. I hope to visit your museum, Thank you sir.

According to Wikipedia there is only one C-41: "The sole C-41 was a VIP aircraft for Air Corps Chief Oscar Westover (and his successor Hap Arnold ). Although supplied against a C-39 order it was not a DC-2 derivative but in fact a DC-3-253 fitted with two 1,200 hp (890 kW) Pratt & Whitney R-1830-21 engines. (The sole Douglas C-41A was also a VIP version of the DC-3A)"

Richard Cline Scott Glover in this video, had done a huge amount of research over several years to get the facts correct. There is quite a bit inaccurate info on Wikipedia about many aircraft and we don’t use them for any information at all.

The R-1830, no matter the dash number, had 14 cylinders in two banks. I know because I left a lot of knuckle skin on the cooling fins. The Wright R-1820 was a single bank of nine cylinders, used on the B-17 and others.
@billolgaau
@billolgaau 6 жыл бұрын
The Wright R-1820 was also used on the DC-3's. Of the 1,600 hours I had on them I only spent 24 hours on Pratt R-1830's. Not much difference in operation except the Cyclones used more oil. I went strait from DH-82 Tiger Moth Bi Planes to the DC-3, now THAT was a challenge! We spent 1.5 hours learning how to taxi it. In the air it is like a heavy on the controls Cessna & very forgiving. The highest ground speed I ever did was 240 kts & the slowest 45 kts!!

A very modern panel there - In the ones I flew the Co Pilot had an altimeter & an Airspeed & used the Sperry Autopilot Attitude indicator - that's it. No GPS & at times no Radio Aids (The ADF needle was good at pointing at Storms), just navigating by Dead Reckoning.

Are you limited to eight people on board if you are flying a paid tour. When Spunkmeyer sold it to Jim Gabbert, the insurance company limited him to eight passengers. Then I heard that the FAA limited the airplane and all Part 91 air tours to either eight paying passengers or eight persons total. I flew her from 1995 through 1998 when Otis sold her. Thanks, Bob Campbell

We charged $99 for an honest hour, and we were always full. When I hired on, it was supposed to be part time, but it wasn't unusual for me to fly 3-4 tours on Saturday and then 2 to 3 flights during the week, but I got paid $75/flight so I didn't complain. I'm listening to your tape as I write this. Otis had two DC-3s.

@southjerseysound7340

I've never had a problem getting avgas in the US and Europe. The same goes for Turkey, northern Africa and parts of south and central America. The only times I have had trouble is while flying to remote areas where it's hard to get anything and even then it only takes money.
@victorpalamar8769

@@southjerseysound7340 25 or 50 gallons: no problem, if you need 200 gallons twice daily the cost and availability would come into question when most commercial operations use jet fuel so that it would be more readily available. Planes like the Twin Otter which are easily adapted to floats or skis are taking the place of the DC3 for this reason.
