These two short pieces belong to the genre known as 'consort music', a popular form of domestic music-making in Elizabethan England.
Not much is known about the life of Anthony Holborne. He appears to have been born about the year 1545 and to have died, probably in London, in 1602.
He published two collections of his music, the one in which these two pieces appear in 1599, containing 65 works, and an earlier one with the title The Cittharn School in 1597 with 58 works.
Recorder : Shigheharu Yamaoka
Viola da gamba : Hiroshi Fukuzawa
Lute : Akiko Sato
Harpsichord : Naoya Ohtsuka
Classical dance : Yoko Ichise, Sayaka Kasuya

《パヴァーン Pavane とガリアード Galliard》
ホルボーンの作品を65曲収めた大規模な曲集『パヴァーン,ガリアード,アルメイン,その他の短いエア集 Pavans, Galliards, Almains, and Other Short Aeirs』(ロンドン,1599)に伝わる合奏曲。

Beautifully played and danced, indeed! Those are some of the best historical dance renditions I have ever seen, takes a lot of research and rehearsal to get it that good! Very nice...

I apologise for not mentioning how beautifully the musicians render the whole work, and what a lovely balance of instrumentation.

Most galliards on KZfaq are around 169 - 171 beats per minute. This one is about 143. The difference this makes is significant. Whilst the excitement and dynamic may be reduced, the gain is in the beauty of the movements. We have a splendid use of arms, both graceful and demonstrative, and the body movements both in shading and position are so exquisitely worked out. These are details frequently missed in faster performances. Here we see a gallantry and affection rarely seen in other performances. The execution of the saut majeur and cadences - particularly noticeable in the gentleman - are wonderful, the lady is a delight in her gentler actions. An excellent performance. Thank you.

That is how it was supposed to be performed at court. In this case we see the rudiment of ballet, Basic movements. That is what makes it, "Stylish."

Today it is not distance since we are still able to witness it. Not for every one, these people work hard to make it come to life otherwise lost in time and space for ever. This is a revival of what was lost, probably for ever

Pavanes are the slow, very graceful dances. Really were meant for the "old folk" to be able to get out on the dance floor and show off their finery, without too much physical exertion.

300 years later and an ocean away Argentines Uruguay and and others? used many or all of these dances in distant derivations for their new Independence era dances like el Gato el Cuando. and others 1810 to 1820. (South Brazil also uses these but at that time was still a colony.) Who could PREDICT such twists and turns of history. ? Certainly not Spanish colonists who also brought these with them and then found Pro independence people use versions of these against them. What fortunate irony
