Have you ever seen an axolotl? What happens when ants and an axolotl mix? Do you even know how to pronounce 'axolotl'? Join us for another episode of discovery as we learn about the peculiar, endearing, and incredible ways of an amphibian which has gone close to extinct in its natural range. Our newest Antiverse guest comes to us by way of need. You see, the resident crayfish (Emperor Sapphire) which used to keep the waters (the Golden Springs) of our Yellow Crazy Ant colony (the Golden Empire) clean, has outgrown his domain. So, to take his place, is a new axolotl, a mighty white aquadragon. Will the this axolotl settle into the Golden Springs and perform his cleaning duties just as well as our former crayfish? Ant love forever! This video was shot in 4K Ultra HD resolution.

I'm really glad about this update, thank you. I couldn't finish the video because it made me very uneasy, but I knew you'd read the comments and think of the animal before getting offended or upset about the criticism. You're a great pet owner and I'm excited to see either your new home for it or a new beast for the pond. :)

I have an axolotl myself! She was sold to me as a runt, as her siblings were three times her size. So far, she hasn't grown a bit, but she's survived a terrible fungal infection that kills axolotls in masses. Definitely a strong survivor! So as another animal keeper, I believe the idea of keeping the axolotl in the Golden Springs was wonderful. But this axolotl in particular, seems to need more. I would suggest taking it out of the Golden Empire's territory, and giving it their own tank to explore and grow. Perhaps a planted aquarium, and out of the Ant room. Replacing it with another, smaller growing crayfish, is the best way to go. Also, axolotls need much cooler temperatures than what the Ant room can provide, and too much heat can easily get them sick. However, if this happens, one of the best ways to heal your axolotl is to place them in the fridge for a few days. With the infection, my girl spent a week in there, and came out completely healthy! In the fridge, the metabolism of the axolotl is slowed down, giving them time to heal sicknesses and regenerate any lost limbs quickly. This decision is up to the AC family, but I do hope, with enough people reading this, we will be able to make the right choice to keep this adorable animal alive.

I think this is a great idea! Even though the Golden Springs look big enough to house the Axolotl, it probably does need more than the space provided.

10 Gallons is the minimum for an Adult Axolotl. Juveniles can use a bit more space, however. Despite having all four legs grown and is at a sizable length, she is still considered a juvie which means they are super active compared to adults. 13g longs or 20g are perfect for them but when they are older (2-3 years) that 10 gallon would be more than enough as 80% of their day would be lazing in one spot followed by a roundabout for some food foraging. If you can upgrade the floor space to be an extra *3-4" in length and 1-2" in width* that'd be plenty of floor space for them to swim and hobble around! But above all else, make sure the parameters are always in check and that the temp is *cold.* You'd definitely need better filtration if you're planning on keeping them in something this small. Axolotls may be opportunistic eaters but they need to be conditioned to properly understand what is food to them. Handfeeding or using tongs to feed the "beast" some ants over a week or two should give them a taste for the insects. I handfeed mine gutloaded crickets and over time I would begin to drop them in at the surface. What was once a food they didn't have interest in, they learned to strike the moment a cricket hit the surface. But I can't confirm that this sort of hunting mannerism will carry from axie to axie. While the anecdote of them starring off into the outside world was touching, it was most likely interested more in it's reflection. Axolotls don't have the sharpest of sight and primarily see rudimentary shapes and colors. Being part of the mole salamander family, they never really developed an acute vision because in the wild they've gone most of their lives without even seeing the sun. Lastly, while ants are a fine supplement for a diet due to a softer exoskeleton and high protein/low fat content, it's not a staple for their diet. You'd need to feed them bloodworms or earthworms regularly to promote growth.

Actually, the minimum has increased to twenty gallons per six inch long axolotl. They continue to grow throughout their lives - some reaching over a foot in length - and they require extremely cold water - between 55' F and 67' F.

AntsCanada Totally true! I have been keeping axolotls for a while now and they seem to have quite of a personality, some get along with other axolotls and some don't so i wouldn't advise it. (even though my axolotls in the paired tank love cuddeling up with eachother). When it comes to the 10 gallon tank, Axolotls don't need a high tank but they like a lot of crawling space and darker places to hide (since they don't have eyelids, high light intensity can be stressing, you can recognize stress if their gills are faced forwards. Axolotls are pretty messy eaters so watch out with small rocks because they will eat them and can cause clogging. Feeding them bloodworms is fine but i'd advise nightcrawler worms (mine come from my vermiculture farm). Anyways, the area might be a tad small and he's surely love a longer and wider tank but doesn't have to be much higher (maybe a 5cm increase in water level would already be fine), a 60liter or 16 gallon tank is ideal for 1 axolotl . Love what you are doing here man (sorry if i made any spelling mistakes my english isn't that good), hope that maybe one day i'll have an ant colony for my own, you are a major inspiration!

I have an Axolotl and they’re very sensitive. He needs to be much colder so you may need a chiller or to re-home him. He will also need more space, especially at his size. Also if the sand is too big it could get stuck in his digestive track. He could try to suck in water and eat ants or food and accidentally eat sand. Also if all you’re feeding him is ants then he will need earthworms too at his size. A lot of people are being rude and jumping on you but I understand you’re new with Axolotls and you’re learning but he does look beautiful and seems to love looking at the ants!

I have the same axolotl at home and also another axolotl (wild type) However I must point out that the setup is far from ideal. The bottom is full of debree and it doesnt have anything to grip its feet on it stresem the when they dont have anything like that The tank is too small And the tank is full of decor it has almost no way of swimming (except for walking they like swimming too) it could get trapped when it would go up for air (yes they do that) and could drown as a result Also if you want to keep its diet consisted mostly of ants it will starve to death EDIT: Oh god I just noticed that the axolotl has curved gills that is a sign of very high stress PLEASE FIX THESE PROBLEMS ASAP

Okay wasn’t enough options, so I think you should keep it, but NOT in the golden empire. . . Reasons, Number one, it definitely is not enough room for the ‘dragon’, Number two, Axolotls rarely eat ants, only when really needed, for they never come out of the water, they won’t risk it, Number three, If the golden empire somehow manages to get to the axolotl, you’ll never hear the end of it, and great regret will be felt, And Finally Number four, Ants don’t provide enough nutrients for Axolotl to survive, as I used to have one of my own, I had an ant infestation and that’s all I fed it, it died from a lack of nutrition. . . So there are my reasons. . . I really hope ya read this. . .

You weren't watching the video... He said, he followed the minimum requirements and said, he didn't think it was enough space. So, he was already suspicious of that. Secondly, he said he would feed her blood worms. A diet that most breeders and keepers of this salamander feeds it. So, it will NOT starve like yours did. Thirdly, He never intended for it to hunt outside the water. He wanted it to dispose of ant remains and drowning ants... In other words, things that fall into its water domain. If anything, you should rather be worried that AntsCanada is handling Bloodworms with his fingers. Since most people that handle bloodworms, develop rashes/allergic reactions to bloodworms over time.

The Tank realy is super small for this poor guy. I work at an aquarium shop in Germany and sometimes we also get axolotl's, we mostly put them in 60 (15G) liter Tanks. But only for the time being in the shop. If a customer comes in and want to buy one, we tell them that the minimal size should be 80cmx50cm (30inchx20inch). This is usually fitting since they dont need a lot of height. But if you want the axolotl to have a good life, i recommend putting him in 100cmx50cm with 2 or 3 friends. And i'm also not sure which temperature your water has, but i suppose its quiet high since you live in the phillipeans, but the best temperature range is between 14-22° celcius. I hope my english isnt too bad^^ Greetings from Germany :)

The substrate as well can be a little risky. Simply taking out all substrate will give more space, plus it really reduces chances of impaction (where the animal accidentally eats the sand and it gets stuck in their system) which can kill them over a time without an outside indication. With the outside plants, it'll still look amazing, and the animal gets even more space :) Just an idea :)

i agree, with the axolotl, as for the fighting fish no you should NEVER have a male and female in the same tank at all unless they're in heat even then you'll want to watch the two very closely, you can have 3-4 females in the same tank however just not with a male outside of breeding as for an Axolotl, as a owner of two axolotl's currently with a 175litre tank that current tank is too small they require AT LEAST 50 liters, the water should also be 16 - 18 celsius and have a air stone and the water will be needed to be changed once a month at least

As someone who owns two Axolotls myself, I'm not sure if that'd be a suitable place for them. I'd recommend a bigger tank, and I'm not sure ants and bloodworms would be a suitable diet for them (bloodworms because they're used more as a "treat"). They eat earthworms as well, and carnivore pellets are also great to fatten them up and supplement the worms. Their poop is also pretty dirtying for the tank and needs to be cleaned out practically every day you see it; they'll step on it and break it up all over the tank from time to time. I love your channel and your videos, but I have to say this probably won't be a suitable home for them. I'd love to see it in its own tank! I'd keep going on with some tips but I don't want to sound like I'm trying to lecture, love you ant family!

And I'd also recommend feeding her worms & Hikari carnivore or salmon pellets along with the ants, I'm not sure yours will get all the nutrition it needs from ants alone. Hope this help and I'm looking forward to the plans you have with your little white dragon!

Beat me to it, Zoie is 100% correct. I don't think they'll eat ants (I could be surprised, I've seen salamanders eating some odd things) but they're not balanced diets. Earthworms are the best staple. I prefer 29 gallon tanks, but 20 longs are fine for a single animal. My big concern is the water temperature - that room has a lot of lights and tropical plants, so it's probably hotter than an axolotl will like - around 22C (72F) is the recommended max.

i have bred and kept axolotls for over twenty years, that little guy you have there is going to get bigger, he seems to have a little damage, the tail and i noticed the fingers on the front left seemed a bit nipped. right now where he is is ok as a hospital tank but will not be any good to keep him in. within a few days he will need a bit more space. also although bloodworms are ok, it is far better to feed earthworms, these must be totally organic. buy smaller ones or you can cut bigger worms up with a pair of scissors. if you can not keep some worms alive, as they usually come by weight and you need to keep them alive until used, then you will need a good axolotl food pellet like novolotl. they are mucky pups and you will need to keep a close eye on parameters as ammonia burns can kill. although i know people like a substrate really due to the method of feeding it is better to have clear bottoms, although sand is far less likely to cause compactions than gravel, or in my large breeding tanks i use a soft, aquarium safe, fake grass on half the floor so they have something nice to lay on and leave the other half plain glass for feeding. he also needs a hide . if your water is soft you need to harden it up, this can be done with holtfreter's, axies need hard water to maintain skin integrity, something that might not be so good for your ants. anyway, if you ever want any help try caudata.org, you will find some really good info there.

Another thing you should definitely keep in mind with axolotl is that they are prone to jumping out of their aquarium if the water level is high enough - as it is in your tank. I wouldn't be surprised if it would jump out into the terrarium and end up as ant food. You would need a lid as well as a much higher tank, a larger tank would also definitely a good idea. Oh and feeding it only ants is a pretty bad idea. I'd recommend earthworms (dendrobena) or, if you want to feed non-live food, Repashy Meat- and Grub-pie are good choices that I had tremendous success with. Bloodworms however have little to no nutrition at all, it's just empty calories like gummy worms are for us. Also, feeding feeder fish is a terrible idea, chances are the fish will take nibs off the axolotl which can lead to infection easily, especially when the animal is stressed out by the light and constant movement around the enclosure and when the water is too warm. I'd really advise replacing the axolotl with another crayfish. As nice as the enclosure might look, it's not suitable for an axolotl.

Having an axolotl as the keeper of the springs sounds great in theory but as an owner of an axolotl I don’t think that’s a good habitat for an axolotl. The substrate should be finer sand and there seems to be small rocks across the bottom that they could end up swallowing which would be fatal. Axolotls wouldn’t be a good idea in order to keep the waters clean as axolotls are super messy animals to keep and being the tank is quite small. You should put the axolotl into a separate tank in the room as they are very interesting to own but I wouldn’t say it’s suitable to keep in its current home.

I think you've heard it wrong, the *minimum* requirement should be 20 gallons, you *have* to rehouse it or somehow change the golden waters. The tank ratio is also important, you need to keep it in a 3×5×3 dimension, axolotl's stay below in cold waters so make sure it's deep enough so it doesn't warm up.

I'm sorry to say but this is a poor setup for an axolotl; ants are not a good diet (they prefer small worms and a LOT of variety in their diets) and they like a lot of horizontal space, which this poor guy doesn't have. On a side note, the axie most likely wasn't looking out of its tank at the surroundings, but at their own reflection. Axolotls are very social creatures and get lonely, though, they will attack each other if they're under 3-5 years old. EDIT: I meant to mention in the original post that Axolotls also get very stressed out by flowing water and, specifically, by a current. I don't know how rough the waterfall is, but if you need to keep this guy in this setup, you should be careful about that.

@Adam Evening well they arent critically endangered and how many idiots do you know that raise over a dozen species of ants? I bet you have a can of bug spray in your home so don't cry when other people actually make a difference. This channel educates millions and gives both a home and purpose to species most people consider pests. And lets add a family of newts to that cause he just got a female and put them both in a huge tank together. And just in case you aren't smart enough to know this...the axolotls will become semi aquatic lizards months from now. So ya he just saved and raised more lives than you probably have.

First, you need to confirm that it eats ants; otherwise, it's a moot question. If so, I think it might be OK, since you researched that it had the minimum required space. But if you want to give him more room, I thought the crayfish was more interesting, so long as you get a species that won't outgrow the tank. I've kept crawdads in my fish tanks frequently - they're incredibly fun to watch. But if you can't get a small species of that, what's wrong with good, old-fashioned fish?

I really like that you are actually willing to rehome him because of research and cause it’s sad which you should because most yourubers who specialize on animal care videos most of the time don’t even research and let’s the animal just live there and suffer but they think they’re doing the right thing but they’re not so I like your willingness for the poor creature and for it’s wellbeing

Dear AntsCanada, I do feel that keeping the Axolotl in that tank isn't right. I have found with hamsters that the set minimum cage requirement is 24 x 12 x 12 inches. I am very passionate about animals, so I went to KZfaq for help. I had found a few channels, but found they were misleading. When I found a few channels that I could tell were very passionate about animals, I started watching their videos. Their hamsters looked very happy. I soon found out that hamsters were way better and more happy in 40 gallon tanks! I also believe that the poll that you set up is misleading. I do not think you viewers should not be able to change the fate of your animals. I do think that many of our decisions are very good, but when we are not Axolotl experts, we might not know the most about Axolotls, and that will lead to bad choices for the Axolotl. I am not trying to insult us, as viewers in any way, I just don't think we are knowledgable enough with axolotls to decide what cage size they are in. I did do a quick search and found out they could reach the size of 30 cm (11.8 inches!) I really do hope you see this and I'm not too late. Please like for the Axolotl's fate. Edit: First of all, wow! I have never gotten so many likes! It warms my heart to see how many people care about animals! 2nd Edit: A few hours ago, I saw just a few comments addressing the axolotl. Now, the only thing I see is comments addressing your axolotl, making sure they get a new home! I'm so proud of our community! ;) 3rd Edit: Thank you soo much, AntsCanada! I hope your axolotl will be in many more videos!!!

Most of his viewer base are children. Putting the lives of animals in the hands of children is a bad idea in my opinion. He's a grown ass man and should be able to make rational decisions on his own on the ecology, environmental needs and diet of the species he keeps. All it takes is a bit of research into amphibians in general to realize they don't eat already dead or decaying matter.

I feel to guilty not giving it space reqiurment by the way axolotls need a 20 galon tank so it simply dosnt have enough space at all. half of the tank would also normaly be land and the other half water so keeping it in the water all day is kinda cruel I think you should get a new ant eater and let the axolotl have some more space.

The problem with keeping sand substrate with amphibians (or reptiles) is that they can get sand compactions - a build up of sand in the intestines. This happens as they eat a little sand when they feed, most of which is safely past through the digestive track, but some gets stuck, which is the problem. I've seen it happen with Bearded dragons, gekos and skinks. I once had it happen to a Ringed Tailed Skink of mine and had to hand feed liquids and massage it's intestines for a good month before it past. In the wild they just deal with it and die off, but it's something preventable for captive creatures that can drastically increase their lifespand. That's why I use felt pads instead of substrait. Doesn't look nearly as good (and is more of a pain to clean) but it's better for them so it's worth it. For the Newts I own I use medium sized gravel - big enough that they can't eat it, but small enough to not be, well, comically big. Just food for thought.

Axolotls are recommended to keep on either sand or no substrate. He made the right choice in replacing the gravel. Additionally, he owned a bearded dragon, and any reptile owner worth their salt understands what impaction is.

I understand feeling that you may not be offering enough space for that amphibian. If you have ten gallons, I think a great option would be a mexican dwarf crayfish or two. They're quite small, but very active and don't hide as much as other crayfish. They come in orange and blue. My local aquarium store got some in and I had to get one. He/she is living happily with some cherry and ghost shrimp and has given me no problems.
